In addition to car break-ins and swiped catalytic converters, drivers in
Northern California have another problem to worry about — stolen license
plates.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the Livermore Police Department warned that
thieves are stealing license plates and then attaching them to other cars
which they then use to commit crimes.

Not only do the stolen plates mislead police investigations, they also can
cost their actual owners plenty of money and cause plenty of headaches.
One woman in San Francisco received multiple parking tickets under her
name, KERO-TV previously reported, and that same year, one real estate
agent told KGO-TV that she racked up a number of bills after thieves stole
her plate and went on a joyride.

“The people who took my plate out put it on a vehicle and crisscrossed the
Bay Area for months and cost thousands of dollars in tolls,” she told the
outlet.

Though Reddit posts suggest that this has long been an issue in the Bay
Area, the Department of Motor Vehicles has no information about how to
prevent plate theft on its site. When SFGATE contacted the DMV for more
information, a spokesperson did not answer any questions. “To clarify, you
are asking why people steal things and what they use the stuff they steal
for?” the spokesperson said via email.

Representatives then referred SFGATE to the DMV’s website and said that
they do not have readily available information regarding the number of
reported stolen license plates.

To prevent license plate theft, Livermore police recommended parking in
well-lit areas near surveillance cameras, using anti-theft screws,
checking plates regularly and reporting suspicious activity. Anyone with a
stolen plate must provide a police report when requesting a replacement to
the DMV and pay a fee.

Livermore Police Department representatives did not respond to SFGATE’s
request for comment at the time of publication.
