Jerry, Vladimir Lugovskoy is one of my favorite poets from /any/ country. I
discovered his work During my rounds to the used book stores/thrift shops
last summer, I
came across this cool little hardback from 1974 Russia, for two bucks, I see
it was reprinted in 2001 but they probably didn't keep the quaint shaky
typeset and binding this copy has that makes it a fascinating artifact from
a time long passed.

I expected "Soviet" poetry to be clamped down and dry from the opressions of
the era, but was pleasantly surprised that they have the same poetic drives
as poets anywhere.
Anyway, though many of these poets are translated and online, I've looked
everywhere on the net and find absolutely no Vladimir Lugovskoy... you don't
happen to be familiar with him - perhaps give a whirl at translating some of
his work?
Just an early morning long-shot, here... and your comments on Russian poetry
seemed to open a good opportunity to put this out... perhaps someone else
has something to say about this great poet.

Here are 49 of his poems in Russian, Will. Sure, I'm sure I'll find
one or two worth translating. I'll probably do them in French,
Spanish and German, too, despite the wishes of our local Ecuadorian
nut! Believe it or not, I get fan mail from Spanish ladies about my
Spanish translations! Well, as they say, only the stupid and ignorant
can do nothing but criticize.

It seems many people in our modern times forgot or don't care what happened
to the Jews last century, and really for every century into ancient times...
all the way back to being slaves to the Egyptians. Millions were murdered by
the fucken Nazis, and because they couldn't or didn't fight back it took the
USA to finally get off our asses and smack those evil s.o.b.s down... of
course way too late to save what may well have been a generation of
brilliant, creative minds.
Look at the Jews who were children and young adults here in America and
other places besides the slaughterhouse of Europe during the 1930s-40s,
great poets and artists such as Ginsberg, Dylan, Cohen, Simon and on and
on... would be nothing but ashes if left to these bastard Anti-Semites.
A nightmare to even consider where we'd be without these people informing
and illuminating our lives. Hell, if Hitler and his thugs had had their way,
Einstein would be ashes, and the Japanese and Germans would have us either
in chains, or in oblivion.
"Never again!" should never become just an outdated slogan... Israel must
survive, and do what it must to make that happen.

The docks.

Shadow of a plane.
Enormous face of the moon.

The poems in the 50 Soviet Poets book by Lugovskoy are "The Woman I Had
Known", "Introduction" and "Photographs"... I have no idea how accurate the

My Master holds the rope just so.
He knows me. Knows my moods. Knows the fear behind my eyes, both real and
imagined.
Those eyes widen as he gently lays the rope down, as he carefully,
methodically, systematically, lays the toys down on the bed.
Soft moans escape from behind gagged lips. I have been told to watch.
To see each and know that soon each will touch me.
He looks up briefly as he lays each down on the bed. Checking reactions.
Watching.
The short whip. A sigh.
The deerskin. The suede.
The small braided thong, the one that stings. A short moan.

Oh, I understand the difference between anti-semitism and anti-
Zionism. And, I suppose you are probably anti-Zionist, but not
antisemitic, from what you tell me. But, I think you may be a little
paranoid about Zionism, particularly in the case of this particular
poem I have attempted to translate. Maybe that is understandable,
given the militarism of the Israelis. But, really, none of the
writers on the site benyehuda.org -- where this poem was taken from --
are even slightly militaristic, even when they are Zionists. They
attempt to present Zionism as a natural development from economics and
psychology. Obvioiusly, that is not the position of the Israeli
government! Israel is an armed camp.
