In the psycho-geography of King's Cross,
headlines of tomorrow are tossed from a train
in whirlwinds of arcane technical papers,
into unknown hands, never recovered again

The Behemoth supposes itself too great to fail,
though its habits hardened, its judges bribed,
its hatreds imbibed like drunkard's ale

Domestic terror and Poe's Arabesque interior

THUMBING THROUGH THE PAGES of a May 1840 Burton's Gentleman's
Magazine the reader alights on a curious essay about the
"philosophy" of interior design written by the editor, Edgar
Allan Poe

This sphere of repose is not only achieved through obscure
lighting and plush materials, it is conducted by the meditative
arabesque designs which adorn the wallpaper, carpet, and
"all upholstery of this nature." However, when these very same
arabesque images appear in Poe's fiction, they effect not
pleasant dreaming but nightmarish terror.

The arabesque, which operates as a "rigid" representation of
leisure in "The Philosophy of Furniture," becomes animate in
these "serious tales"--a metamorphosis which allows terror to
infiltrate the domestic sphere.

Abstract. We represent a novel geometric construction in 3D
space- a saturated polytetrahedron, which is an infinite cluster of
perfect face-adjacent tetrahedra where there are no faces to add
further tetrahedra. A perfect tetrahedron is represented by a con-
figuration of four identical balls. Therefore our polytetrahedron is
a specific packing of hard spheres consisted of tetrahedral configu-
rations, where all accessible pits between three spheres on faces of
tetrahedra are occupied by spheres.

The 1952 test also intensified the Cold War, starting Soviet
scientists on a race to find a similar super bomb. On Nov. 22,
1955, the Soviet Union exploded its own thermonuclear device.

For historians, there's the rub. How did Moscow acquire the
secret of the hydrogen bomb? A new book - "The Nuclear Express"
(Zenith, 2009) purports to have the answer: an unnamed Soviet
agent, code-named PERSEUS, working at Los Alamos.

The Perseus Project & The World of Mary Renault

If you like archeology and Greek history, you will find this
site most interesting. The Perseus Project is a non-profit
venture, located in the Department of the Classics at Tufts
University.

When Mary Renault died in 1983, she was one of the most popular
historical novelists in the English language; her books have
been translated into every major tongue. While her novels helped
many people come to terms with their sexuality and gave
homosexuals a place in history, she also offered straight
readers a sympathetic world "where heterosexuality was neither
the only nor the dominant sexual type."

If you called a homosexual gay before the first half of the last
century, you would have provoked incomprehension

It seems that when Renault was living in South Africa after 1947,
if you called an African a "black" you would have risked being
seriously hurt.

While Mary Renault became known as a standard bearer of the
sexual revolution, she was best known in South Africa as the
president of the Cape Town Center of PEN International, a world
association of writers. P.E.N. acts as a powerful voice in
opposing political censorship and speaking for writers harassed,
imprisoned, sometimes murdered for the expression of their views.

She went to Oxford with the idea of teaching, but decided that
she wanted to be a writer.

The astonishing risk of the PERSEUS operation was that it sought
to capitalize on a still living spy, perhaps on more than one.

The thinking, I believe, was this: We must provide real facts
that foreign intelligence agencies (and spy buffs) can check and
confirm, but we can spin these facts in such a way that they'll
go running in circles. We have a large number of unidentified
foreign agents to play with, so why don't we mix their personal
and professional data? We can speak of a major atomic spy who
has never been caught and is still alive, a spy scientist so
famous that his name is known to the whole world, a Morris Cohen
recruit who was involved in the Spanish Civil War, a native of
New York, a scientist at the Metlab before the war, an atomic
spy involved in the anti-nuclear movement after the war, and so
on and so forth-all real people, just not one man. Alter dates
here and there, toss in a bit of spice like a fish head sticking
out of a bag, and don't forget the Kleenex-box story, mix well-
and nobody will ever unmix this salad.

When the old Stalininst veteran Pavel Sudoplatov acted like a
rogue and published a book of sensational memoirs in the West
without prior KGB approval, the SVR (Foreign Intelligence
Service, as this branch of the former KGB was now called)
officially denounced him and vouched for the PERSEUS story.

That denunciation appeared in Izvestiya under the ironic title,
"Robert Oppenheimer could have been a Soviet agent, but only if
a spy ring existed that was known to no one."

American Prometheus:
The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer

During the economic depression of the 1930s Oppenheimer became a
supporter of leftist social causes and could count as colleagues
and friends a number of Communists, including his younger
brother and one of the great romantic loves of his life.

Prometheus not only gave fire to humans, he also challenged the
other gods with his arrogance. Following the war, Oppenheimer
was celebrated as a hero. He became director of the Institute of
Advanced Study in Princeton. Here he had ample opportunity to
offend Lewis Strauss, a right-wing member of the Institute's
board of directors who was also chairman of the U.S. Atomic
Energy Commission.

Prometheus advised Herakles not to go after the apples himself,
but rather to reelive Atlas of the celestial sphere and dispatch

remembered Prometheus' advise and took over the sphere

On the advise of Prometheus he asked Atlas to take the sky while
he put a cushion on his head. Hearing this, Atlas set the apples
down on the ground, and relieved Herakles of the sphere. Thus
Herakles picked them up and left. Some say, however, that he did
not take the apples from Atlas, but killed the Drakon that
guarded them, and picked them himself. Returning with the apples
he gave them to Eurystheus who made a present of them to
Herakles.

The Assassin of Relativity
Peter Galison, Harvard University

Harvard University

In his younger years--from the time they were students together
in Zurich--Albert Einstein was good friends with Friedrich Adler.
Adler, son of the cultured leader of the Socialist Party in
Vienna, was, like Einstein, a physicist very much engaged with
both epistemology and politics. They shared a fascination with
Ernst Mach--Einstein and Adler even lived in the same building
where their young children played together, and spoke often
about their efforts in physics. They even competed for the same
job at the University of Zurich. Adler wrote his father that he
and Einstein had seemingly "parallel lives". Then, in the midst
of World War I, on 21 October 1916, Adler assassinated the Prime
Minister of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Einstein rallied to
Adler's defense and--between death row and Berlin--Adler and
Einstein began an extraordinary correspondence about the meaning
and validity of relativity theory: inter alia, the twin paradox
and other paradoxes involving space and time. This presentation
is an exploration of the heady mix of politics, physics and
philosophy that followed--as the world stumbled deeper into war--
and began grappling with the import of relativity.

MY COUNTRY VERSUS ME

The motive for this essay this came when I was browsing through
a book by Wen Ho Lee, "My Country Versus Me: The First-Hand
Account By the Los Alamos Scientist Who Was Falsely Accused of
Being a Spy" [1].

One of the major incidents in the Wen Ho Lee espionage case
involved a meeting in a hotel room in Beijing, where Chinese
scientists asked Lee how many "points" were used on modern
nuclear warheads.

Lee explained in his book that "points" are referring to
detonation explosives. These are not in themselves nuclear,
but facilitate in producing the nuclear chain reaction.
The "Fat Man" atom bomb in WWII had 32 such explosives.

This information is classified. Lee said that he did not answer
the question, but he got in trouble for failing to report the
approach by foreigners. The FBI was very suspicious, wanting to
know why Chinese scientists felt comfortable approaching
Lee in that way, as if they expected that he would answer.

LEARNING TREE

I once had an opportunity to discuss the subject of nuclear
weapons with a nuclear scientist from Los Alamos.

I suppose that a poet would incur the wrath of the gods for
observing that it is a "small world". That is not really fair,
because it is not our fault when trite sayings are true.

There is a company, "Learning Tree, International" that provides
"Hands-on IT and Management training for Technology and
Management professions". One of their training centers is in
the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Engineers from many different disciplines attend there.

Once, years ago, I was attending a class there, with no other
coworkers to accompany me on the trip.

At lunchtime, the lunch-room was nearly filled, so I introduced
myself to a person sitting by himself at a random table, and
asked if I might join.

It turned out that he was a nuclear scientist from Los Alamos
National lab.

This piqued my curiosity, so I immediately began discreetly
grilling him for anything interesting that I could wheedle out
of him.

Not for espionage, just for sheer curiosity.

He seemed comfortable that I was just another fellow professional,
and didn't feel a need to keep his guard up.

One of the first questions that I asked him, was "Is it really
true that a grad student could design a nuclear weapon?"

His answer was instantaneous and confident.

"Oh, yes, there are even instructions on the Internet. It is
really scary."

I asked him, "Is the U.S government really committed to doing no
more nuclear testing? How can they be sure that their weapons
are still functional, if they don't test them?"

His response was that the government really was playing by the
rules, and not doing secret tests. They were using computer
simulations to verify the functioning of their weapon designs.

That is the very sort of software on which Wen Ho Lee was
working.

It is a bit painful to say the following, when my real point is
more about the futility of paranoid secrecy. However, this
interaction with the LANL scientist is an example where a bit
more discretion probably would have been prudent, on his part.

Probably, you should not even be telling anyone that you are a
nuclear physicist working for Los Alamos labs.

Suppose that you walk out to a parking lot, a group of men
jump you, throw a sack over your head, and put a gun in your
back.

Just the opposite of an illegal immigrant, you now
become an "illegal emigrant", slipped over the U.S. border into
Mexico, from there to Cuba or Venezuela, from there to China or
Korea.

Quicker than you can say "Dick Cheney", for the next 10 years,
you are being waterboarded and tortured daily until you reveal
everything that you know about fashioning nuclear weapons.

Such are the potential, unintended consequences of innocent
conversations. 'Nuff said.

MORE CONNECTIONS

A fellow from my old college dorm had majored in physics,
and went on to become a deputy group leader at LANL.
The mission of the larger group to which he belonged
included the responsibility for nuclear weapon stewardship.

The LANL scientist mentioned previously was a different person.

Another alumnus from my university had gone even further,
and was at one time the head of Los Alamos.

On the campus is a fountain that is a tribute to
Michelson and Morley, who had been professors at my
university, and who performed an experiment that formed
the basis for the theory of relativity.

I guess the school was proud of that fact, and because
they had a theory about "well-rounded engineers", all
freshmen took the same classes, regardless of major.
In the physics class, we all worked relativity problems
and studied the derivation of "E=mc2" from a
more generalized but less popularized form of the
relativity equations, that related mass, velocity and time.

A career in software engineering is a good exercise
in humility, because 1) there is not a person alive
who is so brilliant that they won't make mistakes
and 2) you are surrounded by so many, extremely bright
people that you lose any illusion of specialness.

However, when I ponder the question: "Is it just a
fantasy-trip, or is really possible, that a person
not much different than yourself could learn to design
nuclear weapons?", I believe that there is no
ego-driven over-estimation in that conclusion.

Past familiarity makes the possibility seem real enough.

My dorm-mate who went on to become a LANL physicist
was someone that I knew well, had lunch everyday,
shared some of the physics classes. At the time,
I thought that physics was an impractical choice
of career, in terms of easily finding a job.

I underestimated my classmate. Governments would
be similarly unwise to underestimate either the
degree of alienation that they have bred, or the
potential capabilities that deeply alienated individuals
could have, someday.

The most dangerously alienated individuals would probably
also be competent enough to understand the need for keeping
their true alienation discreetly quiet.

CLEVER CHINESE

When I have played Chinese colleagues in the 4000 year-old
board game of "Go", I have marveled at how their minds
work, and the depth of their insight.

I think that it might be cultural chauvinism to suppose
that Yankees have corned a market in ingenuity, and
that different cultures are not perfectly capable of
discovering the same technological advances without
needing to steal them.

CLASSIFYING THE OBVIOUS

Our government could not credibly claim that I am
"revealing classified information", since I have no access
to classified information. I am speculating, taking a
gamble, so that somewhere, a curious politician might quietly
ask an expert, "Is this information really classified?
Is he really guessing correctly?"

To my mind, I am only pointing out the obvious, but
if I manage to get the story right, then it still
might help to spread a desirable "meme". Truths that
cannot be spoken, will be whispered in a gossip chain,
beyond the grasp of government and media censors.

I believe that most of what I say here should be fairly
intuitive to unbiased persons, without even needing much
background in physics. I also believe that anyone who
researches on Internet could probably find material even
more detailed than presented, here.

I have no plans of building nuclear weapons or assisting anyone
in building them. This exercise is to provide "food-for-thought".

POINTLESS QUESTION ABOUT BOMB POINTS

It is a bit of an ironic thought, but insights into what would
seem like highly technical issues can sometimes fall into a
category that could be better characterized almost as "common
sense".

Let's try to use some common sense about the requirements of
nuclear warhead design.

It didn't seem completely clear whether the Chinese scientists
were intending to ask about any nuclear warhead or limited to
smaller warheads, like the W-88.

I don't believe that matters, though, because the relevant
considerations for this particular aspect of the design would be
the same.

The question seems naive. If you understand the goals of nuclear
warhead design, you already know what the optimal design would
be. You would not care what the U.S. might be doing,
if the U.S were not using an optimal design.

I would tend to doubt that these scientists really had
involvement in China's nuclear program.

COMMON SENSE IN NUCLEAR DESIGN

The purpose of the "points" on a nuclear warhead is to create a
compressive force around a core of fissile material.

The purpose of the compressive force is to cause a sudden
increase in the density of the nuclear material. It is the
increase in density that causes the nuclear reaction to become
supercritical.

Why would the Fat Man bomb have used 32 points?

You notice that "32" is a multiple and a power of two.
Why would that be?

SYMMETRY

Increasing the density of the fissile material is a bit like
squeezing a ball. Imagine that you want to take a basketball,
and squeeze it down to the size of a baseball.

You would want to put your hands evenly, completely around it.
Not like grabbing a balloon in the middle, squeezing it, and
having it pop out on the ends.

You want evenly distributed, consistent pressure, not lop-sided.
That is why a power of two: for balance. One on the top, one on
the bottom, one on the front, one on the back, etc.

So, how many "points" of detonation explosives are best?

If your goal is evenly distributed pressure, then the more, the
better. You might have a limit if the explosives are large and
adding more would add too much bulk. So you want to add smaller
and smaller points, with more and more of them, spread around in
symmetric, balanced style

What is perfection, the mathematical limit of that process?

It is a bit like an integral, in calculus, approaching a limit
as a function progresses toward infinity.

The optimal would not be a number of discrete detonation explosives,
but a hollow sphere of explosive material, surrounding an inner
core of fissile material.

A bit like the Earth's mantle, surrounding an inner, iron core.

OVAL FAT MAN

Why did Manhattan Project engineers stop at 32 points?

I suppose, as Shakespeare said, "'Tis enough, 'twill do".

There are issues of efficiency in building nuclear
bombs. Not necessarily a question of whether it works, or doesn't.

You could slap a couple pieces of fissile material together,
rather haphazardly and have about a 50% chance of making an
explosion, in some scenarios.

The goal is designing to get the biggest explosion, reliably,
with the smallest amount of material.

The Fat Man atomic bomb of WWII had more of an oval shape, not
spherical.

At first, I was puzzled by that, because every instinct was
crying out that it should be a sphere.

As it turns out, I believe, the oval shape had more to do with
other logistical factors in the construction, not with
optimizing the nuclear physics. Apparently, the oval was later
replaced by a sphere.

SIMULTANEITY

If you have a hollow shell of explosive material to surround the
fissile core, then the next key is timing. You want the whole
thing to explode at once, not to have, say, the left part of the
spherical eggshell starting to explode before the right half.

You need precise timing, to achieve simultaneity.

I have read that "sophisticated" timers are needed for nuclear
bomb construction, but I believe that it is not really much more
sophisticated than everyday sorts of problems faced by engineers
in other disciplines.

For example, if you are using a cable modem to access the
internet and read this article, the problems of timing, to
handle the data that you are transferring, are similarly complex.

It is almost the reverse problem: out of thousands of modems, no
two of them, on the same RF upstream, at the same frequency, can
try to transmit, simultaneously, or they will interfere with each
other. Instead of trying to ensure that different events are
exactly simultaneous, you have to make sure that different events
do NOT ever happen simultaneously.

To make your cable modem work, there has to be elaborate time-
synchronization. There are maps sent to the modems from the
head-end, specifying for any given second, exactly which small
time-windows ("mini-slots" in cable lingo) are permitted for
which modems to transmit.

For your nuclear bomb, you would have a fine grid to detonate
your hollow sphere, at many points, in precise time-
synchronization.

That sort of task is much easier today, than in the comparative
horse-and-buggy days of the "Fat Man" bomb.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Writing these poem/blogs is often a learning adventure.
Following below is some material describing construction of a
"Swan" nuclear device. Its author sounds a bit paranoid
about getting unfriendly visits from the FBI, for presenting it.
I found this after having written the above, stating my own
theory.

I am not sure if this is one of those "really scary" web sites
that the LANL scientist had mentioned, at my Virginia
engineering class.

The author below uses the term "lenses", instead of "points",
and refers to "two lenses" in more modern bombs, but it sounds
like he is basically talking about the same thing - creating of
"perfect sphere" of implosive force.

That seems so completely intuitive, I don't think that
I would back down for all the waterboarding in Gitmo.

THE DIFFICULT PART, PART I

By the time that you make your point that perhaps building
nuclear weapons is not as impossibly arcane as one might
imagine, the next line of defense is predictable.

"Oh, tut-tut, pooh-poo", people will say.
Building the bomb is not the difficult part.
Obtaining the materials is the difficult part.

Saw that one coming. Another time, another discussion,
another poem, more prose discussion. This will include
a debate about nuclear plant safety that I once had while
in Kiev, Ukraine, near Chernobyl, with a mechanical engineer
who had worked in nuclear plants.

SOURCE CONTROL

Wen Ho Lee stated explained his reason for downloading
classified information to his personal computer, by saying that
he wanted a "snapshot" of his software.

His software was involved in modeling nuclear explosions, not
building bombs, per se.

The software is sensitive because you cannot model a bomb's
explosion without knowing exactly how it was constructed.
Information about construction, details about dimensions, timing,
etc, would be implicit.

Lee said that the behavior of his software was affected by the
context of other software, written by other scientists, which
frequently changed, so he wanted to keep a snapshot of the entire
thing, for future reference.

Any software engineer in private industry would understand
perfectly well what Wen Ho Lee means, and should realize that
there something extremely wrong with this picture.

This is coming from an institution that boasts of its
contributions to super-computing?

If Wen Ho is not telling the truth about this, then he would be
attempting to fool only a naive public. He would be damning
himself with a flimsy explanation.

On the other hand, if Wen Ho is telling the truth, it means that
Los Alamos labs would be way behind the state-of-art, relative
to private industry, in terms of software "source control".

It is almost inconceivable that the IT group at LANL would not
have backups available, but requesting access to a backup would
not even be necessary, if there were a reasonable source control
system in place.

If LANL really does not to have a source control system,
then this would be some free advice to our government:
You should fix that, pronto.

There are commercial packages like "ClearCase" that should
be adequate even with LANL security needs.

It should be more like this: Name a year, a month,
day, hour and minute when you would like to see exactly what
the full software file set looked like. Give me about 20 seconds,
and I'll bring it up for you.

When you are developing a complex piece of software, you are
constantly making changes. It is never 100% "bug-free" and
never 100% finished. When you make changes, you do not simply
overwrite the files, and keep the latest.

You track every single change made, with another bug-tracking/
change management system (like "ClearQuest").

If you want to see what changes were made, you have a complete
history "tree" to examine. This cross-references entries in the
bug-tracking system, explaining each and every change that was
ever made.

If LANL isn't already operating with that sort of thing, it
would be a shocking scandal, in its own right.

If so, it might demonstrate how excessive secrecy
could lead to a scenario where bureaucracy can start
falling out of touch, with no one even aware of weaknesses
that need fixing.

Wen Ho describes a culture that also seemed to lack in
accountability. Because of secrecy, there wasn't adequate
accounting of what employees were even doing for a living. He
wondered aloud if they might be "falling asleep at their desks".

Secrecy tends to become corrupted over time.
The "dangerous information" isn't just about building bombs.
It is about screw-ups, embarrassing blunders, tail-covering.

Even those are the innocent secrets. Eventually, the secretive
culture will one of secret atrocities, secret killings
of innocent people, or secret genocide.

I might recommend a book about out-of-control government secrecy,
"A Nation of Secrets", by Ted Gup, a professor of Journalism.

WELL-KNOWN SECRETS

One of the funnier things in Professor Gup's book is that very
point. Information that is "classified", even though it has
previously been made public, written in books, reported in major
newspapers.

I can imagine similar absurdity for anything contained in this
essay.

However, if anyone says that the topics of this essay
are well-known, then why is there a major to-do
when Chinese scientists ask the question of Wen Ho Lee?

Just because information can be pieced together easily from
other information that is readily available, all over the place,
does not mean that it is not necessarily "classified", in the
surreal world of secrecy.

LANL AND VT

Wen Ho Lee's book complains of anti-Chinese bias, although Lee
seems very eager to prove his patriotism.

He displays an American flag on the cover of his book, and talks
sentimentally about his neighbors and about life in this country.

It might seem to most Caucasians that anti-Chinese prejudice is
not all that bad, but this is the sort of perception that might
be very different to a Chinese person.

I recall how Cho, the Virginia Tech killer had been told
to "go back to China". Not an excuse for his rampage, but probably
at least a factor that could have been avoided.

To look at Virginia Tech, you might suppose that loners and
losers are the most dangerous people to be watched.

That is not true. Charismatic, competent, successful people
could be far more dangerous. If a Wen Ho Lee ever became as
alienated and resentful as Cho, he could be far more destructive.

When people are competent and successful, they tend to be
happier, and less inclined to nihilistic rampage.

On the other hand, people who are on-the-ball sometimes
are better able to grasp realities that can shatter complacency.

They might not show this, on the surface.

They have reputations and careers to protect. They have
friends and family to protect. They do not want to bring their
friends down by laying loads of existential gloom upon them.
Unlike a mere psychopath, they consider the effects of
their actions on themselves and loved ones.

However, it would be optimistic to suppose that there are not
such people, harboring destructive resentments that they would
be willing to unleash, in the right time and situation,
when their own circumstances became unfortunate enough, or
the limits of endurance had been reached.

That is why societies with long-standing ethnic and religious
conflicts can seem so stable, until things suddenly
disintegrate.

Not being Chinese, I would not want to downplay the prejudice
that might be suffered by Chinese Americans. However, it is not
as severe as that faced by gay Americans.

When was the last time that a state legislator pronounced that
Chinese-Americans are a greater threat to our country than
terrorism, or mentioned in the same breath as animals
and child rapists?

NUKE TERROR VS BIOWAR

Los Alamos National Labs only involved with nuclear weapons,
although that it how it started.

Los Alamos is home to a worldwide database of HIV virus
information. There are some prominent names, such as
microbiologist Bette Korber, who works for Los Alamos'
Theoretical Division.

Los Alamos is not the only U.S. lab that has a history with
AIDS-like viruses. About 10 years before AIDS broke out,
Dr. MacArthur, a deputy director of the Department of Defense,
had requested money from Congress, saying that it was
possible to develop a new virus that would be "refractory to the
immune system", in a timeframe of about 10 years.

The Congressional testimony suggests that there must have been
even earlier experimentation, to justify that projection.

In "Dr. Mary's Monkey", by Ed Haslam, the author describes how
there had apparently been experimentation, using radiation to
mutate monkey viruses, for the express purpose of making a
weapon for biological warfare. The alleged, intended target was
against communist countries.

It would hardly be surprising that the hate-obsessed
right-wingers would also have other groups that they
would relish eliminating.

The monkey virus experiments were alleged to have been conducted
in New Orleans.

The alleged, illegal experimentation involved both a prominent
doctor, and some shady figures who were later involved in the
Kennedy assassination.

This is the kind of information that doesn't need even to be
censored. Public apathy is so profound that it is largely
ignored, without discussion, even when published and in the open.

It has been alleged that vaccine programs both in Africa and the
U.S. seemed strongly correlated with the original outbreaks of
AIDS in both locations.

In the U.S, this involved hepatitis vaccine trials, in the late
1970s, that recruited an unprecedented number of gay men,
far more than would have been scientifically justifiable
for trial purposes.

The purported, altruistic goal was a government desire to
protect promiscuous gay men against hepatitis. The altruism
later turned to blood-chilling apathy, when gay men
suddenly were dying of something far more serious.

This peculiar change of heart, and unfortunate turn of events,
was not sufficient to produce much cynicism or suspicion among
America's gay population.

In New York City, the blood-mobiles that collected from gay men
sometimes contained little Dracula dolls "to put the subjects
at ease". Perhaps those men never knew what kind of joke was
being played on them, by a winking Wolf.

I realized that a proper, standard statistical test had never
been attempted to validate or invalidate the hypothesis that the
vaccine trials were connected.

That neglect for the obvious was in itself something inexplicable
that should have raised warning flags.

The promiscuous gay men in the vaccine trials were not the
only promiscuous gay men in New York or San Francisco.
Rather than blaming the victims on moral grounds, a comparison
can still be made between vaccine recipients and non-recipients
in the same, metropolitan area.

I did the legwork, checked the data with a scientist who had
originally collected the data, checked the results with a
professor of statistics.

It was clear that the vaccines were implicated in starting
the U.S. AIDS epidemic.

Back to Los Alamos labs. There was another microbiologist, who
has worked with well-known figures like Betty Korber and
Beatrice Hahn, who had struck up a conversation with a number of
"conspiracy theorists", including myself.

He assured us that he as not "working for the CIA", or some such
language, and just trying to cover-up.

I had him look at my analysis. His response was to say that,
"I don't think that you can prove anything with statistics."

That remark was unprofessional and absurd. Published scientific
studies are depending on statistics to prove their point, every
day. God help us, if we didn't have statistics to prove or
disprove the safety of a new drug, or food additive.

Another well-known name, a microbiologist in California looked
at my study and made a confidential remark that I knew was a
bit closer to the truth.

He said that my study wasn't really even needed, because it was
"manifestly obvious" that these vaccines had been contaminated.

Efforts to show that HIV existed in nature, before the outbreak
of AIDS is irrelevant to the question of whether the vaccines
were deliberately contaminated.

A virus that is simply discovered in the wild, can be put into
vaccines, even more easily than having to 1) genetically
engineer a new virus, or 2) mutate viruses until you get lucky
and find a deadly one.

IN an attempt to exonerate their vaccines, the researchers
actually damned themselves, even more. They went out of their
way to prove that accidental contamination of the vaccines should
have been "impossible", using their production methods.

All that proves is that the contamination was not accidental,
because it was manifestly obvious that the contamination was
present. They had not bothered to address the more obvious
question, that by rights should have been the first order
of business - was there a statistically significant correlation?

MANHATTAN PROJECT II

The Manhattan Project was a good example of a large-scale
project that was successfully kept secret.

If there was a Manhattan Project II, a similar biological
project, would the public necessarily know about it,
even to this day? The Japanese were aggressively pursuing
biological warfare, in WWII. Would the Americans not have
also known about this, and followed suit, just as they feared
that Germans might get a nuke, first?

The former Soviet Union had a secret biological warfare
project, Biopreparat, after WWII. The scale of it
shocked American scientists.

Even after WWII, the American government was not satisfied
with its killing capacity, after 60 million people dead.
They went on to develop the far more powerful H-bomb.

It is less known by the public, but they also had
continuing interest in biological warfare, just like the
Russians. It was a poorly-publicized scandal, how America
sheltered Japanese Unit 731 biological warfare scientists
from prosecution for war crimes, because the American
government wanted the fruits of their research.

The former KGB scorned the claim that Nixon had stopped
American biological warfare research by the 1970s.
Their intelligence indicated that it had merely been
turned into a "black op" under an innocent-sounding
guise of "cancer research".

Leo Szilard, one of the physicists responsible for the
atom bomb, changed his field of study to biology. His published
experiments involved such topics as inducing mutations in
bacteria and investigating the immune system.

After the drama of Hiroshima, not even the propaganda
powers of the CIA could keep the nuclear secret bottled.

With a Biowarfare Bomb, it is not the same scenario
after it has been dropped, even though it might be as deadly.

If a biological equivalent of an atom bomb is released,
this can be covered-up as an unfortunate act of Nature.

In the minds of military men and the Far Right, this would
be a Holy Grail.

HELL IN THE HALLOWED HALLS OF HARVARD

I once had email correspondence with a fellow at Harvard, who
told me that there rumors on the campus about some Harvard-
educated researchers who were involved in biological warfare
experiments that led to the AIDS epidemic.

He said that there was suppression against such ideas.

Ironically, one of the first authors who tried to expose the
links of AIDS to government/military experimentation, Leonard
Horowitz, was also Harvard educated.

Compared to the firestorm over a black Harvard professor
being arrested for unruly behavior when a policemen
responded to a break-in report, there was not nearly so much
excitement or concern when the President of Iran was invited to
Harvard, where he proudly defended his country's practice of
executing homosexuals.

By one account of the lecture, the audience sat and listened
in silence, like dull cattle, not managing the decency to respond
with so much as a hushed gasp.

Treatment of gays in the Islamic world has little improved
since the 7th century. When deeply entrenched religious beliefs,
passed from generation to generation, are the basis for extreme
persecution, what force could have the potency to bring a
complete sea-change of an entire culture?

Nuclear force? How many centuries of patience would be
required before the oppressed resorting to using it?

Osama bin Laden could not count among his grievances that
the United States routinely puts Muslims to death, under force
of law, simply for being Muslims. Instead, their religious
freedom is protected.

Another thing that makes rational people like scientists
so potentially dangerous is that they can sometimes see through the
weakness of superstitious religious arguments, that might otherwise
mollify their rage in an unrealistic expectation of supernatural
delivery from their plight.

Why should a global gay community not have more allegiance
to itself than to any particular nation? Such a sentiment would
be little different than a pan-Arab or pan-African outlook.

The methodical execution of our kind would be an act
of war, no less than Pearl Harbor. Our use of nuclear force
would make us no more "terrorists" than the United States
in Hiroshima.

Most Americans, to learn of such alienation, would have the
same reaction that they had after Sept 11, imagining that
no real grievances existed, that their critics must be
evil or insane.

Iran at least puts gays to death openly, and owns up
to what it does.

The United States, if my belief is correct, has killed
far more gays than Iran has ever done, only my country
country has done it under a veil of cowardly secrecy,
while wearing a hypocritical mask of decency.

Certainly, the case against the U.S. government, for
allegations of biological warfare, are stronger and
better documented than the U.S government's allegations
against Iraq.

LOW-TECH WAY TO CREATE NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS

I wonder, did it ever occur to the gracious hosts of Harvard,
how a really nasty anarchist might have gone about trying to
punish all the parties involved, for their genocidal indifference?

One could test the adequacy of the security measures, by having
a radical student run up and shoot the Iranian President,
squarely in the head.

Hmm.. how might events transpire, from there?

Can you picture it? The Iranian government is outraged, claims it
was a Western plot or CIA assassination, starts a jihad, which
goes nuclear, causing the U.S economy to melt-down, but not
before retaliation in kind obliterated the homophobic government
of Iran, completely.

An adventure in anarchy, on a shoe-string budget, without
even needing to worry about critical geometry.

SAME OLD, SAME ANCIENT

The bombs may be new, but the hatreds are the
same ancient, same ancient. Bad combination.

By the law of averages, dangerous knowledge cannot be kept
from dangerous hands. It is best to be diplomatic
with persons who might view the world very differently.
They are not necessarily any more "evil" than you are,
simply more deeply aggrieved.

It is dangerous to make a sport and an exercise in political
opportunism, to establish one's identity and rally the vote
by encouraging dislike of a vulnerable minority that has been
treated with little but contempt for thousands of years. If a
nuke goes off, you too might have thousands of years to wait,
until life is endurable again. Be patient. If you want
to make a bargain with the Devil, and think it doesn't matter,
then you should have the Devil to pay.

PATAPHYSICAL SCIENCE

If you want a religion that tells you the truth, instead
of comforting fantasies, then maybe you should consider
physics as a religion.

It is really the field that provides the most clues
about the innermost workings of reality. It tries
to prove what it believes, as opposed to most religions,
which seem to feel that strength of a belief is the
best proof of its truth.

Poetry and physics are perhaps not all that far apart.
Poets should spend much time scratching their heads at
the utterly bizarre nature of reality. So do physicists.

I suspect that the quirky aspects of reality could
make a poet for some reason far more dangerous than
a nuclear scientist. It seems perfectly ridiculous
to me that this should be true. There is every good,
rational reason why it should not be true.

I just cannot help but to notice that, for whatever
explanation, it appears to be true.

For example, I once wrote a poem about an explosion
in Texas City, Texas. A couple weeks later, there was
an explosion in Texas City.

I wrote a poem about malfunctioning control rods in
nuclear reactors, and mentioned LaSalle nuclear reactor.
LaSalle had a malfunctioning control rod, a few weeks
later.

In July-Aug 2001, I described a vision of hijacked
commercial airliner, kamikazing into the Pentagon.

If things like this happened once or twice, then
sure, they are just coincidences. When they start
happening nearly every other Tuesday, then it is probably
something more. I cannot begin to relate all the
peculiar events, here.

Whatever is the something more, it is not terror.
I doubt that there are any "fans" trying make such
things happen, certainly not to my knowledge.

It is not conspiracy, or imagined pattern, or a superstitious
affair of witches, gods, and devils. I'm not sure what it is.

Sometimes, it almost seems, when you become convinced of
things like covert genocide, it creates a black hole in your heart.
It is an interesting phenomenon of physics, in its own right.
Almost as if it pulls in the light, and starts bending reality.

I would almost hate to stop now, even if things suddenly got
much better. This has just become too interesting. It sometimes
seems that poetry is more likely to unearth the secrets of deep
reality, than the Hadron Collider.

When it dawns on you that paranormal phenomena are not
simply a bunch of silly ghost stories, it is a humbling thing
for someone who likes to think that they have a rational,
scientific outlook. It is like being punished for your
simplistic certainties, by being banished to the Twilight Zone.

Is it poetry or doggerel? Well, when the doggerel bit you
on the leg, did your leg bleed? Yes? Well, then it must
have been good doggerel.

I suspect that a nuclear explosion is just as possible
as an explosion on an oil rig, just as inexplicably.
I have little idea why this would be true, but
please don't ask for anyone to prove it to you.

Instead of putting up your nasty and prideful defenses,
maybe you should try letting go of the defensiveness,
and listen.

THE DIFFICULT PART, PART II

The really difficult thing about nuclear weapons is not
designing them, or obtaining the material.

The difficult part would be trying to convince the men in power
that they had their posteriors perched on a nuclear bomb,
without having actually to demonstrate it to them.

When power-drunk people become too accustomed to what they suppose
is the natural order of things, they have a difficult time
letting go of their top-dog, God-favored, Manifest Destiny.

Perhaps our government leaders should be less paranoid about
"secrets" that aren't really secrets, and have a bit more
healthy paranoia about whom they are alienating, and how much
they are alienating them.

Care a bit less about crushing enemies, and bit more about not
making so many enemies.

Modern nuclear weapons are completely different from the old,
obsolete, WW-II era designs. Those used a sphere 5 feet in
diameter, weighing nearly 10,000 pounds, with 32 huge explosive
lenses packed around an inner explosive sphere and then large
heavy core assembly. That was in 1945.

By 11 years later, in June 1956, the United States was testing
the first of a whole new design concept, the Swan device, which
was later used as the Robin Primary in the W-45 nuclear weapon
and as the primary or first fission stage of the W-38 and W-47
nuclear warheads on early Atlas, Titan, and Polaris missiles.

The Swan device was less than a foot in diameter and less than
two feet long, weighing only 105 pounds. Rather than 32 heavy,
thick explosive lenses, it used two lenses, using a completely
different mechanism. An air gap lens was used, where a thin
layer of explosive drives a thin layer of metal out across an
empty, air or vaccum filled gap. The explosive and metal are
shaped carefully to form the metal into an imploding perfect
sphere, which then impacts and evenly detonates a sphere of high
explosive in the center of the bomb. The blast wave moves
inwards, accellerating a hollow sphere at its center inwards at
high speed. That inner sphere is made of Plutonium, with a thin
layer of Beryllium metal acting as a neutron reflector around it.
Inside the hollow plutonium sphere is a mixture of a few grams
of Deuterium and Tritium gas, which will "boost" the fission
bomb by fusing together into helium in a thermonuclear reaction
once the fission bomb lights off.

Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know Sciences brings you this
exciting new design illustration of the Swan device, showing the
key design concepts and layout of the device. Classified for 52
years, we have reverse-engineered the design for your amusement!

To avoid unpleasant visits from the FBI, we've carefully filed
the dimensions off of this illustration.

As recently as 2007, the Swan device required a Department of

In Chapter 31 Einstein attempts to imagine an entire Universe!
Like Pythagoras 2500 years before, Einstein is motivated by a
search for harmony. He follows what would be called the
Cosmological Principle: The Universe looks the same no matter
what direction one looks, and every bit resembles every other
bit. He rejects a flat Universe, for his General Relativity shows
that Space/Time is curved. He rejects the idea of boundaries and
considers the Universe "finite yet unbounded".

The obvious analogy is a sphere.

This 4-dimensional spherical Space has a finite volume given by:

V = 2 $\pi$^2 R^3

The Albrecht/Maguiejo paper can be a help here. Refer to their
equation (10). Here R (not a) is scale and e is the deviation
from critical density

edot = (1 + e)e(Rdot/R)(1 + 3w) + 2(cdot/c)e

Is it not reassuring that the other terms cancel? When t is low
e is large and a large edot drives density toward a critical
value.

Can you believe some people act as if this isn't a Theory?

It is painful to say that new ideas take time for scientists
to figure out
------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.dannen.com/budatalk.html

This slide shows that secret patent 630,726, as it was finally
published in 1949 after remaining secret for 13 years. In it,
Szilard defined the concept of the critical mass, which he
called the "critical thickness." The next slide, from that
patent, shows Szilard's design for a nuclear reactor. The design
shows a sphere of a chain-reacting element

It is important to remember that, when Szilard first proposed
the chain reaction, it was regarded as absurd. The doubters
included almost every scientist of his time, and most
particularly Ernest Rutherford, Niels Bohr and Enrico Fermi

I have been researching Szilard's life for many years. My work
has been especially difficult because many of his most important
documents and letters dated before 1933 are missing

As you probably know, Szilard kept his important papers in
suitcases so that he could travel at a moments notice. At least
one of these suitcases has never been found
------------------------------------------------------------------

Szilard and Fermi together patented the nuclear reactor and
Szilard later proposed the term "breeder" to describe a reactor
which produced more fuel than it burned. He also invented a
lobbying group called the Council for a Livable World and
thought up the idea for the Washington-Moscow hot line.

When his political activities led General Groves to withdraw all
government support from Szilard in nuclear physics, he switched
his interests to molecular biology

In addition, he was from that small elite group including Teller,
Wigner, and von Neumann who came from Hungary and were the
products of the Budapest Gymnasia. These four were called by
their fellow scientists the "Martians" because their ways seemed
strange to the Americans and because of their otherworldly
brilliance. All were theoretical physicists, friends of the
world's leading scientist Albert Einstein, and steeped in
European culture and interests. They spoke Hungarian, which
perhaps sounds like Martian to some people.

With all of these balls in the air, he still found time to put
down on paper his semi-serious version of the Ten Commandments.

The fragments of the stone tablets that Szilard picked up are
clearly different in both substance and tone from those which
Moses brought

Szilard understood a lot about the conduct of men, but he had
very little understanding of (or interest in) women

His marriage was very unconventional and he rarely lived with his wife

She met Szilard before the war, and the two were married in the

Szilard considered himself a "bachelor at heart."

THE MOLECULAR BASIS OF ANTIBODY FORMATION*,
BY LEO SZILARD
THE ENRICO FERMI INSTITUTE FOR NUCLEAR STUDIES, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

When a soluble protein antigen is injected into an adult rabbit
for the first time, the rabbit responds after about 5 days with
the formation of antibodies which are specific for this antigen.

If, a few weeks after we have injected into the rabbit a soluble
antigen, such as a foreign serum protein, we inject the same
antigen again, then three days later the rabbit may respond with
a copious production of antibody and the antigen will be rapidly
eliminated from the circulation.

Specific immune tolerance could not endure for long if the
lymphatic cells of the rabbit which have not locked for the
production of any antibody were to divide at a. substantial rate

Cells which have locked for the production of an antibody may be
assumed to undergo divisions at an appreciable rate, but these
cells are not capable of responding to the exposure of an
antigen with the formation of the specific antibody, and would
therefore not abolish immune tolerance.)

It's interesting to note that in 1969 a research administrator
for the US DoD, Dr Donald MacArthur informed a House military
appropriations subcommittee that they were working on a new
micro-organism that would essentially break up the immune system;
he gave a time line of 5-10 years. Congress approved funding and
less than 10 years later, AIDS appeared in Africa.

biology, working extensively with Aaron Novick. He proposed, in
February of 1950, a new kind of nuclear weapon using cobalt as a
tamper, a cobalt bomb, which he said might wipe out all life on
the planet.

When Szilard brainstormed with Polanyi about the Bund, he
praised The Open Conspiracy: Blueprints for a World Revolution

Szilard's proposed "Bund" also bore many similarities to Louise
Weiss's Ecole de la Paix, which was meeting during these same
years in Paris

The "Bund" and the "Open Conspiracy" were frankly elitist
conceptions, but neither of them was intended as a blueprint for
a modern form of oligarchical government. What Szilard and Wells
had in mind, rather, was to inject a strong dose of meritocracy
into the processes of contemporary mass democracy. They
envisioned a group of enlightened leaders with sufficient moral
authority to persuade large numbers of citizens, but they
refused to accept any Leninist notions of a vanguard party that
could force the masses to follow their "objective" interests.
"Care must be taken," Szilard wrote,

Szilard met regularly with Soviet scientists and officials
during trips to Europe and at international scientific
conferences, and he once chided his friend Edward Teller, the
father of the American hydrogen bomb, for his rigidly anti-
Soviet position

Agents monitoring Szilard recorded: "Subject is of Jewish

Szilard influenced a group of scientists to produce the Franck
Report, which outlined the dangers of a nuclear arms race. The
report advised against the use of an atomic bomb against
Japanese civilians, advocating instead a non-combat
demonstration.

In July 1945 Szilard circulated a petition urging President
Truman not to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. A revised
version of this petition was eventually signed by 68 scientists
at the Metallurgical Laboratory. It was strongly opposed by
General Groves, head of the Manhattan Project, on the grounds
that such a petition would breach security and expose the
existence of the atomic bomb. The petition did not reach the
president.

The motivation of The Church of the Seventh Coming was to found
an entirely religious based community, to have a society with
none of the cares and worries of secular society and a group of
eminent scientists had a new and revolutionary plan for terra-
forming such an inhospitable planet to turn it into a utopia.

From this point on The Church started to lose its pre-eminent
position within Venerian society but the time spent in the
Venusian and Mercurian colonies by the original Venerians had
forged them into a single minded and hard band of people. They
quickly took control of the infrastructure of the colony in the
Canaan system and moved on to also take leading roles in the
founding of other colonies in nearby systems.

Thus Venerians, and The Church, were heavily involved in the
founding of colonies in the Olan and Agni systems in 2919, the
Vladimir system in 2922, the New Venus system itself in 2927 and
the Beza system in 2934. Whilst these colonies remained under
the control of the Solar Republic they developed their own
identity and culture, drifting further and further from the
aspirations and ideals of the Earthicans. Venerians were also
heavily involved in the founding of independent colonies in the
Ekaterina and Romulus systems in 2938.

As Humans expanded their sphere of influence Venerians went with
them and in each Quadrant of Human space a cluster of systems
were colonised by Venerians under the overall umbrella of the
Solar Republic, and its successor The Earth Empire. The
separation of the Venerians from the Earthicans finally came to
a head in 3070 on Romulus III.

Famous Venerians in History - 2900 to 3045

Before we move on to the Venerian War of Independence, we should
take the time to consider the often sadly ignored part played by
Venerians in the pre-Republican expansion of the human sphere
and their not insubstantial contribution to the arena of war and
politics during the intervening 185 years.

When the Solar Republic was reconstituted as The Earth Empire in
2943 many of the high military positions were held by Venerians.
To this day we will always maintain that it was an equipment
malfunction that targeted the Hyama Dome (2944) for space
bombardment and this was definitely not done on the orders of
Adm. Alexei Chichagov, a Venerian - this was confirmed at the
subsequent Board of Enquiry.

It was not only in the military sphere that Venerians excelled
and took prominent positions in Human history; the Treaty of
Bates (2950), which set out the colonial administrative
Quadrants was masterminded by Astro-Surveyor Andrei Massen-Dexon.
Hence the popular name of Massen-Dexon lines for the artificial
boundaries of each Quadrant.

In 3057, the flap of the butterfly's wings that was to cause the
storm occurred - the Venerian Peoples Party (VPP) was formed to
campaign for lower taxes and the right for the colonies to elect
their own senators. Despite the inherent legitimacy of these
aims, the Earth Empire saw this as an act of disloyalty and
reacted by raising taxes still further and clamping down on
civil rights.

Such oppression, however, merely increased VPP membership and
support

Neptunium Goes Critical During Experiment At Los Alamos

A full-controlled criticality of the element neptunium was
achieved in late September at Los Alamos National Laboratory's
Technical Area 18 using a six kilogram nickel-clad neptunium
sphere in combination with approximately 60 kilograms of
enriched uranium.

"Fabrication of the sphere was completed about 18 months ago
here at Los Alamos," said Sanchez. "Since then we've been in
planning, getting permission from the Department of Energy to do
the experiment and taking care of security issues.

Since the neptunium sphere alone was not of sufficient mass to
sustain the nuclear reaction, it was placed in the center of
several thin nested shells of enriched uranium configured in an
upper and lower half, with the neptunium sphere located in the
lower section.

The nickel-clad neptunuim sphere is shown resting in the lower
half of the assembly surrounded by the shells of enriched
uranium that make up the upper half of the experiment.

that it is not just about putting poems on walls, and that poets

Ash, King's Cross Water Rats, London

We are close enough to see Wheeler watching us as he sings. He
should be old beyond his 30 years by now. But he still looks
innocent, just as Ash have always seemed frozen in their moment
of teenage discovery, adult experience never convincingly
transforming their buzzing, blissful pop style.

Twilight of the Innocents, as the title suggests, is a
determined effort to struggle free from that. "Losing my mind,
it comes so easily," Wheeler sings from the knowingly titled
"You Can't Have It All". In "Blacklisted", they lay bare their
travails in a music industry they've now essentially left.

John Wheeler dies, black hole collapses in response.

Among his many accomplishments, he worked with Niels Bohr to
generate the theory of uranium fission and helped with the
development of the hydrogen bomb.

His nuclear work for the government encountered one notable
snafu. One morning in January 1953, on train to Washington, D.C.
he woke up to realize that the classified paper of the hydrogen
bomb was gone, having disappeared overnight, Princeton's article
said. President Eisenhower got military officials to scold him
personally.

science

The physicist John Wheeler, who has died aged 96, was a key
figure among the international scientists who formed the
Manhattan Project and created the first atomic bomb. But he is
likely to be better remembered as the man who coined the term
"black hole"

As a child he once touched an 11,000-volt power line to find out
what would happen

Brien McMahon, in 1953 commissioned a history of the H-bomb
programme, highly critical of Oppenheimer, to be sent to
President Eisenhower. Wheeler was asked to check the theoretical
material. Notoriously absent-minded, he left six crucial pages
on his train to Washington; they were never recovered.

Springmeier and Wheeler write that other programming sites close
to China Lake are Papa Ludo's Store and Tavern which has a
secret underground programming centre, and Scotty's Castle in
the appropriately named Death Valley. The 'local' for the CIA
personnel operating at China Lake is the Hideaway Tavern.

These lands run into the deserts of Nevada which are full of
Brotherhood operations in and around their wholly-owned city of
Las Vegas

Interestingly, the Springmeier-Wheeler research also documents
the involvement of the China Lake Naval Weapons Center which I
had also heard from other sources. They say that 'batches' of
babies numbering one, two and three thousand, were kept at China
Lake in cages piled to the ceiling of large hangers.80 The cages,
known as 'Woodpecker Grids' were electrified and the babies were
tortured with powerful electric shocks.81 A male survivor of
Project Monarch tells of seeing the rows and rows of cages at
China Lake and one of the programmers, he said, was dressed like
a catholic priest.

We knew, too, in whom we trusted; for had not all the spheres
from the bottomless pit of man's lower nature to the throne of
the Most High been opened to us, and to us alone of modern times,
enabling us to compare and estimate their respective values? And
if danger threatened us for going on at the hands of the former,
what was that to the danger at the hands of the latter for
turning back? While, as for presumption, what presumption could
approach that of putting ourselves in opposition to the Gods ?
manifested as they had been to us ? by declining to execute
their divine behests?

Mary was immensely amused at her triumph over prejudices so
inveterate, and I hailed it as a sign of the times, betokening
that at last the "woman" was in very deed to "crush the head of
the serpent" of the corrupt orthodoxy hitherto in possession.

Mary desiring rather to reserve herself for the fresh
illuminations which might be in store as we proceeded. And,
moreover, I was the more familiar of the two with what had been
received, having, as their copyist, committed them largely to
memory, while for her they had become somewhat dimmed. Among the
sources of my satisfaction while thus engaged was the discovery
that much of what I had written while in Paris

was suitable for use without modification either in substance or
in form, many passages fitting in with an exactitude which made
them appear as if the context had been contrived expressly to
match them.

He baptizeth with the Holy Ghost, and with the Divine Fire

is because the Spirit uplifteth him, even the Spirit who
descendeth upon him. 'And in that he descendeth, it is because
he has first ascended beyond all spheres into the highest
Presence

Such an one returns, therefore, from a higher world; he belongs

I'm not a bomb-tech, never pretended to be one, but something
that is often overlooked in discussing "going critical" is that
mass is only one part of the equation. Another part is geometry.
Optimum critical geometry is, I believe, a perfect sphere.

Spheres Of Prophetic Authority
Alison Papenfus

He was way out of his sphere of authority - and yet he
prophesied accurately!!!

Just as the prophets of scripture had a calling to a specific
sphere - so do we.

But all too often all we know is "I'm chosen to minister in the
prophetic" That's great - but which area of the prophetic??? We
need to know what our sphere is!

Point 1 - The sphere to which we are called has geographic
boundaries

Point 2 - Our sphere has operational boundaries

The enemy is not keen on prophets. His preference is to get
someone to stone them. But if he cant arrange that, and he can't
persuade you that all of this is your imagination - one of his
most successful weapons is this - get them out of their sphere!

Then they will not be effective (listen to the demonic sigh of
relief)

A critical mass is the smallest amount of fissile material
needed for a sustained nuclear chain reaction. The critical mass
of a fissionable material depends upon its nuclear properties (e.
g. the nuclear fission cross-section), its density, its shape

Dictionary: shape

* The characteristic surface configuration of a thing;
an outline or contour.

* A form or condition in which something may exist or appear;
embodiment: a god in the shape of a swan.

* Assumed or false appearance; guise.

* A ghostly form; a phantom.

Critical mass of a bare sphere

Surrounding the original sphere with a neutron reflector

identified as one of the Cambridge Five, a group of upper-middle

became passionate communists and eventually Soviet spies during
World War II and into the 1950s. In his position as secretary to
the chairman of Britain's scientific advisory committee,
Cairncross gained access to a high-level report in the fall of
1941 that confirmed the feasibility of a uranium bomb. He
promptly leaked the information to Moscow agents. In 1951 when
British agents closed in on other members of the Cambridge spy
ring, Cairncross was interrogated after documents in his
handwriting were discovered in a suspect's apartment.

Fred Jerome's expertly told story of Hoover vs Einstein is an
excellent reminder that the business of "security" is really
about the security of business. Hoover defended US capitalism
and its military might against "disloyal" dissenters like
Einstein who wanted a more equal, more just and more peaceful
world.

Einstein's FBI file grew to 1800 pages over 22 years, from his
arrival in the US from Germany in 1933 to his death in 1955.
Einstein, on Hitler's hit list as a brilliant Jewish scientist
and anti-Nazi, arrived in the US just 18 days before the Nazis
seized power but he almost didn't make it as the State
Department attempted to block his visa based on allegations from
a US far-right group that Einstein was a "communist". This was
the first of many pro-Nazi, anti-Semitic "sources" which fed the
FBI with invented tales of Einstein's "communism".

Fearing international ridicule for barring the Nobel Prize
winner, the State Department relented but, along with the FBI,
War Department and Immigration and Naturalization Service,
continued to keep tabs on the draft-dodger and pacifist who
lectured by day on relativity and in the evening urged civil
disobedience against military service

Einstein's support for the Lincoln Brigade, the US Communist
Party-led American volunteer soldiers against the fascist Franco
in the Spanish Civil War, was further "evidence" of Einstein's
undesirablity to Hoover who had a deep empathy with the anti-
Semitic and fascist off-shoots of the far-right.

Einstein joined the anti-nuclear movement, heading the Emergency
Committee of Atomic Scientists, which the FBI saw as a threat to
America's nuclear monopoly and imperialist reach and thus a
"communist front" with Einstein a "big name", "innocent" sponsor.

Einstein's anti-racism further inflamed Hoover. Twelve months
after the end of the "war to save democracy", some 50 African
Americans, most of them war veterans, were killed by the Ku Klux
Klan and other racist vigilantes. Einstein, the Jewish victim of
racism in Germany, reached out to the African-American victims
of racism through articles, speeches and sponsorship of
campaigns against racist violence and injustice. He accepted
Paul Robeson's offer to co-chair the American Crusade to End
Lynching.

Robeson was a trigger for more FBI salivating. A world-famous
bass baritone, former All-American footballer, actor and well-
known radical leftist, Robeson was severely blacklisted in the '
50s and Einstein's continuing friendship with Robeson was a
public act of multi-racial and socialist solidarity.

Einstein was a prominent supporter of Henry Wallace's
Progressive Party in the presidential elections of 1948. The
sacked Democrat commerce secretary opposed anti-Soviet policies
and nuclear war. When the US Communist Party strongly supported
the Wallace campaign, and Wallace refused to give way to Red-
baiting, it fed the anti-Red, and anti-Einstein, frenzy of the
FBI.

Einstein did not hide his socialism. In the first issue of the
independent socialist Monthly Review magazine in 1949, Einstein'
s article, "Why Socialism", eloquently put the case against the
"economic anarchy of capitalism", and its worship of
competitiveness. Critical of Stalinism (Soviet socialism had "a

As the FBI was closing in on the Greenglasses and the Rosenbergs,
things began to happen to several of Julius's acquaintances who
shared his enthusiasm for leftist politics. Joel Barr, a college
friend of Rosenberg, disappeared in Paris

William Perl, a Cleveland scientist, was called before the
Rosenberg grand jury where he denied ever having known Rosenberg.
On the basis of that statement and ample evidence to establish
its falsity, Perl was indicted for perjury.

Cleveland then went to Livermore National Lab, outside of San
Francisco, where he set up and ran the lab's counter-
intelligence program. Inexplicably, Cleveland admitted that he
had renewed his relationship with Leung in 1997

What this means, of course, is that Leung was having sexual
relations, simultaneously, with two of the Bureau's foremost
experts on Chinese espionage. Both had obtained supervisory
positions in their offices, where they would have had access to
information on most, if not all, Bureau counterespionage
operations against China. Cleveland, for example, had run the
Bureau's Tiger Trap case, which involved the suspected theft of
U.S. nuclear secrets by a Livermore scientist in the early 1980s.
It was during the Tiger Trap case that Los Alamos scientist Wen
Ho Lee first came to the attention of the FBI.

I cannot say that there is anything about Craske's
work to excite ecstatic utterance. However clever the
workmanship may be - and in much of his work we may concede
that it is clever - the tone will never give him a seat amongst
the mighty : it is too hard and metallic.

Craske, although his father was a foreigner, was of English
extraction, so he once told my grandfather, who was a fiddle
enthusiast. He said that an ancestor of his named Cross had
settled in Russia, and afterwards in Germany, and the present
form of the name was due to these migrations. Mr. George
Crompton, who was intimately acquainted with this wonderful man,
does not say anything about the matter in his sketch of him in
the June number of The Strad, 1893

It is said that he played beautifully on one of
his own make instruments, and that his services were frequently
requisitioned at local weddings, dances, &c. He also, as needs
would have it, wielded the magic wand, and a story is told of
his laying a ghost at Penhydd by playing a certain tune on his
fiddle at the haunted spot on three successive nights.

Puritan Fanaticism. - The furious bigotry of
Anabaptists, Levellers, and Fifth-monarchy-men had
placed music under a ban, and the gentle voice of
melody had been drowned in the hoarse battle-cry of
the " saints." In the fanatical days of " Praise-God-
Barebones " many and many a precious old viol shared
the fate of the stained glass and carved work of our
cathedrals. Puritan England was the Patmos of art.
Nearly a century elapsed before the muses ventured
forth to fan art into a flame out of the embers of its
dead self

Perhaps in this neglected spot is laid
Some heart once pregnant with celestial fire ;
Hands that the rod of empire might have swayed
Or waked to ecstasy the living lyre."

Something may be said for the copyist who, conscious
of his deficiency in the power of originality, assidu-
ously sets about to copy that which is best and noblest
in art, but apology becomes difficult in the case of the
man who imitates the inferior and less worthy. The
British in their choice of type showed inability to
differentiate between tone nuances

The main objective was to understand consequences of incident
wave evanescence on (existing or under-utilized) scattering
observables. It was also planned to explore conditions whereby
surface roughness enhances the coupling of sound to simulated
buried targets. Resolving these issues should be helpful for
discriminating between echoes from real buried targets and
background object

Manipulating and Harnessing
the Schumann Resonance

Might a galaxy actually be composed of one multi-toned center
black/white hole with countless single-tone black/white holes
orbiting around the multi-toned center black/white hole in
spiral patterns?

Might our planet actually be a fundamental single-tone black/
white hole?

Multiple fundamental and harmonic tones or electromagnetic
pulses in or near the black/white hole of a galaxy probably
scatter molecules and matter in spiral patterns.

A logical source for a constant and steady rhythm is a black
hole on one side of this dimension and a white hole on the
opposite side of that same dimension.

Nikola Tesla's experimentations in Colorado Springs, Colorado
during the late 1800s assisted him in making important findings
and conclusions about the waves of electromagnetic energies
flowing through the Earth. Tesla did not reveal exact details of
his findings but his discoveries were the foundation for
constructing a large tower structure at Wardenclyffe near
Shoreham, New York in 1908

Upon hearing Tesla's declaration, Morgan ordered an immediate
demolition of the tower

The author of the Fate magazine article and his sources
connected the dots of Tesla test firing Wardenclyffe Tower and a
massive nuclear type bomb explosion in Siberia known as the
Tunguska Mystery

Today the wilderness of Tunguska, Russia appears to have been
attacked by a nuclear weapon

DOCTOR ATOMIC: A STUDY GUIDE

A. SETTING THE STAGE

It worked.

(J. Robert Oppenheimer, after the first nuclear bomb test at Los
Alamos)

He did indeed quote the Sanskrit poetry

We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a
few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line
from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to
persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress
him takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now I am become
Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that,
one way or another.

I did set the John Donne sonnet in a way that has an archaic
feel to it. It's in D minor and has a harmonic profile
suggesting a slow, solemn classical chaconne. But that's the
only moment in the whole opera where there's an "artifact," and
I think it's entirely appropriate given the audacity of bringing
poetry of that level onto the test site of an atomic bomb, as
Oppenheimer did. I think the tone of my setting amplifies
Oppenheimer's enormous historical awareness.

The Donne sonnet , which Oppenheimer later said prompted him to
name the test site "Trinity," is a poem of almost unbearable
self-awareness, an agonistic struggle between good and evil,
darkness and light ...

Baudelaire, Donne, the Bhagavad Gita. Peter [Sellars] introduced
me to the work of Muriel Rukyeser, a socially committed poet who
lived at the same time as Oppenheimer and whose work expresses
that special tone of wartime consciousness so powerfully.

I was worried about how this method of libretto creation would
work for Doctor Atomic. In an opera you need that personal
interaction, clashes of will, strong emotions, anger, discord,
love, hate -- the whole gamut of human intercourse. The last
thing we would want would be something historically accurate but
emotionally frozen, like a Victorian oratorio or some such thing.
But in fact he did a brilliant job of solving that challenge. I
think that the dialogue in Doctor Atomic, particularly in the
first act, virtually crackles with the high energy of human
interaction. It's every bit as involving and as realistic as
anything I've seen in any other opera libretto.

(John Adams)

The plot of Doctor Atomic isn't so much a narrative arc as a
chain reaction.

Adams, too, happened to be fascinated by Oppenheimer, as iconic
a figure as 20th-century America had to offer. "Oppenheimer had
interests extending beyond science to culture, which gives him
depth as a character," Adams tells me. "And I'm drawn to
subjects that are close to Americans living now."

But Adams was wary of the Faust legend. "I don't want people
saying it isn't Goethe," he told Rosenberg. "I don't want to
have to figure out who's Mephistopheles." Rosenberg gave him
total freedom

Rough Rider Ashley Pond came to New Mexico looking for a
suitable place to put Teddy Roosevelt's ideas of "robust manhood"
into action.

Dedicated to improving "privileged eastern boys,"
Pond opened the Los Alamos Ranch School, which mixed Latin and
Geometry with horseback riding and clearing forest

Everything that had come before was washed away in a matter of
months.

One of the privileged eastern boys who came to New Mexico in the
early 1920's was Robert Oppenheimer, fresh from a trip to Europe
and seeking a suitable place to recuperate from a bout of
dysentery before entering Harvard University. Apparently, the
young Oppenheimer fell in love the rugged landscape

The Bradbury Science Museum, located in the heart of town,
appears to be half popular education center and half LANL
propaganda headquarters, stressing such issues as the Lab's
contribution to mapping the human genome and advances in super-
computing technologies. Still, there is something self-mocking
in the bold banners proclaiming "Los Alamos: Where Discoveries
are Made." Somehow, the numerous coffee mugs and t-shirts
showing a mushroom cloud and the words,
"Los Alamos: The Atomic City" are more honest.

The thing was huge now, oblong and featureless, a horror to look
upon. It was thrashing convulsively on the bed like a fish

He saw the paths. The Perceptual Continuum. Pulsating. Timeless.
Without dimension. A great sphere crisscrossed with thousands of
thin veins. Tiny nodes drifted upon the strands, receiving and
sending pulses. He had been one of these nodes... A chaotic

strands of thought. Breaking down. His mind faded. Released. He
roamed the pure paths. No order.
