Ok so lately, I've been hearing people in movies use phone numbers other
than the so-called fake 555-XXXX numbers. Wonder if they can get in trouble
for that since the numbers they use could be live numbers somewhere.
Remember the song "867-5309"? Bunches of kids would call that number
expecting a girl named Jennie to pick up the phone (lol)- I've just dated
myself. Anyway, I heard that any number with a 555 prefix was bogus and
unassigned to anything. I stand corrected. I'm guessing that 555 numbers
arent bogus if the area code is 800?

555 is reserved - mostly for phone related things. (information, contacting
the phone co., etc). sometimes it also has some more "interesting" things
too like loops and ANACs

555 is assigned to tv shows, movies etc.. for that reason
they wanted a number that they can use in movies and tv etc.. and it wont be
destroyed by people trying to call james dean or whatever they dial in the
movies
(i watched an in6terview one day, and that was the explanatio given)

555 numbers aren't exactly bogus, just reserved for directory
assistance. I don't know what, if anything, else can be found in that
exchange since I have never scanned it. ($0.35 x 100 is more than I
would like to spend on a scan :) )
As for in 800-555-00xx, it appears to be just like a normal, plain old
800 exchange. I suspeect all of 800-555-xxxx would be as well but I
haven't scanned it all (yet >:))

You pay for scanning? Just find a COCOT (they're usually poorly
protected), strip the wires, and plug in a beige box. Since COCOTs
are almost always on a regular business line (not a payphone line),
you can just make normal calls from there. Of course, I'm not
advocating that you do this, I'm just saying this for the point of
educating people.

NXX-555
-------
The 555 Exchange is reserved for special purposes such as directory
assistance, pay-for-play CNA, Universal Information, etc.
The intended use for 555 numbers include the provisioning of information
services but may include a broad range of existing and future services
as well.
The 555 NXX Guidelines have been established as the result of an
industry consensus that a unique number set (NPA-555-XXXX) is a solution
to identified industry needs. The 555 NXX provides for types of public
information service needs which may not be met by current numbering
solutions, e.g., 976 and 900.
555 numbers are used to reach a wide variety of information services.
555 numbers are in the format 555-XXXX. The line number (XXXX) indicates
the particular information service.
555 numbers may be assigned for either national or local use. A national
assignment requires that the 555 number be implemented in at least 30%
of all NPAs or states or provinces in the NANP Area. A local assignment
is made for implementation in certain NPAs specified at assignment time..
The 555 NXX has been set aside in every geographic NPA (area code) for
the purpose of reaching a wide variety of information services. This
numbering resource is in the format 555 XXXX where the XXXX line number
will be assigned to the subscriber offering the particular information service.
555 numbers may be assigned for either national or regional
(non-national) use. A national number is a unique line number in the 555
XXXX assigned to an entity for use in all or most of the geographic NPAs
in the NANP Area. A number will be designated as a national number if it
is to be used in at least 30% of all NPAs or states or provinces in the
NANP Area. National numbers cannot be assigned to any other entity. A
non-national number is a line number in the 555 NXX assigned to an
entity for use in a specific geographic area or areas (NPAs, states, or
provinces). A number will be designated non-national if it is to be used
in fewer than 30% of NPAs or states or provinces. Non-national numbers
are available for assignment to multiple entities, assuming those
entities wish to use the non-national number in different geographic NPAs.
"Fictitious Numbers": A 555 line number in the range between and
including 555-0100 to 555-0199. These numbers will not be assigned to
be placed in service. They, therefore, may be used by the
entertainment/advertising industries in advertisements, publications,
radio, television, movies, etc. Calls to these numbers placed
accidentally or by curiosity seekers will not complete.
800-555
-------
800-855 numbers, in the format 800-855-XXXX, are used to access Public
Switched Telephone Network services intended for use by the deaf, hard
of hearing, or speech impaired. Such services include Telecommunications
Relay Service and Message Relay Service.
(...) 800-855-XXXX resource, hereafter called 800-855 numbers, which
will only be used for the purpose of accessing public services on the
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) intended for the deaf, hard of
hearing or speech impaired.
To provide control over the 800-855 number assignment and to guarantee,
to the extent possible, the dedicated use of 800-855 numbers according
to these guidelines, the 800-855 numbers will remain unavailable for
normal assignment or reservation through the 800/SMS system.
800-855-0511 is currently assigned for Message Relay Service (MRS) in Canada.
***
Being "in the Industry", I've collected these facts from all the major
organizations managing the North American Phone System. I've got
numbers, specs and details for everything! Yek yek yek!
Hope it clarified things...

REPLY RE 1-800-555-xxxx Toll-Free Numbers:
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") has set aside about
13 specific 1-800-555-xxxx numbers for use in the media and
entertainment industries (they are "dummy numbers" that go nowhere).
Originally the 1-800-555's were intended for competitive "Directory
Assistance" services by other phone companies to compete with AT&T's
1-800-555-1212, but there wasn't sufficient interest by competitive
telephone companies. In December 1994 (over a year after May 1993
toll-free portability went into effect), the FCC released
1-800-555-xxxx numbers for "general assignment" to the public (except
for the 13 set aside as "phoney numbers" for media/entertainment).
That means that, subject to availability, a 1-800-555-xxxx number can
be used by any person, business or non-profit organization just like
any other toll-free number (if you can get one). They are hard to
get, as most were grabbed up after the Dec. 1994 FCC order. The
1-800-555 marketing image is particularly good for non-profit and
charitable organizations as "information" or "helpline" toll-free
hotline numbers.
Interesting fact: As of July 2001, despite the release of 888, 877
and 866 toll-free numbers (and other exchanges on the way),
1-800-555-xxxx numbers remain in the only toll-free exchange in which
there are no matching 888, 877 or 866 numbers. That makes it a
unique, "one and only" stand-alone toll-free number prefix. For more
