Has anyone tried that trick w/ cocots where you dial an 800 number and wait for
it to hangup with success? I tried it on one cocot and immediatly after it hung
up the phone started beeping so I could dial out. Another one clicked a few
times then paused and then begain beeping.

i know this sounds retarted, but every 800 number if tried it with, there's
either like a a vmb or some shit on the other end so it wont hang up, i cnat
find a good 800 number that goes straight to an operator or nay person.

One time on accident after a 800 number hung up on me, I got a dial tone.
Sadly enough when I tried dialing numbers nothing happened, just got the
tone. As if it were muted

that's because they disable the dial pad, you'll need a tone dialer.

Actually, they usually mute the receiver so it can't get any signals,
whether from tone dialer or keypad. At least in my area.

That trick works well with older models of Elcotel 9520C's...
if you are lucky enough to find one of those phones in your area (very
popular in Canada and southern states) it may not work because the newer
models of 9520C's that were made in the past 12 months+ have a newer chip
design that patches that exploit.

More info on those phones can be read about on my site (+section):

- Older 9520C Elcotel's do not mute the receiver
- Older Paytel-Canada model "Protel" phones do not mute the receiver.
- The old brown Northern Telecom (can't remember the model name, dammit)
do not mute the receiver.

- Millennium Model (Protel XP2000) payphones when power is disabled on
them, will disable the muting allowing one to take advantage of the
phones' inability to seize the line on 800 carriers/411/611/888/877/etc.

The Protel here begins beeping right after the 800 number hangs up.

also...southern states: if you want to beige the payphones, the junction
boxes are generally mounted on poles attached to the tops of the phone
booths...so if you stand on the phone booth, you can reach the little green
box. Not something that you would want to do to avoid suspicion, but you
can always run some RJ-45 down the length of the pole...though that would
look suspicious if anyone came to inspect it.

my 2 cents!

Buy a tone dialer from Radio Shack. I bought two; one of the regular
Genexxa memory pocket tone dialer's, and a RadioShack Data Directory +
Phone Dialer (includes a calulator too).

Building your own, would be much cooler though. =)

Yeah, it doesn't work. Ever notice how in the movies/TV when someone is talking
on the phone, and the person they are talking to hangs up, you hear a dial
tone? I suspect the author of that Cocot file saw this happen on TV one too
many times.
