I agree about sending out precious material which can also be old and fragile, like glass plates. I would not do it. Local scanning services don't exist, though I know there are specialist services which may be good.

I have been using an Epson 4990 which was cheap to buy and still makes very
good scans.

Sorry for the delayed question, but I just saw your posts.

1. What do you scan? Negative or slides?

2. If you do scan slides, what is the throughput?
I am not going to do mass slide scanning, but to be
able to do at least 6 at a time would be nice.

3. How complex is the Epson 49990 to use?
I am a novice with picture scanning -- photographs or
slides. My experience is limited to scanning documents.
Much less demanding!

4. Are there facilities for fancy things like scratch/dust
removal?

I am going to check on the Epson 4990, but your input
as an user would be very useful.

I must also add that my aim for scanning my stuff is more
for archival reasons. Good quality is essential.

thanks
