I have a Canon 450D, kit lens, and I bought one of these...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360196915965

It's a Bower Digital duplicator.

It says "HD2" model in the eBay advert, but when it arrived it wasn't
- it was the "standard" one. The shop assured me they were identical.
Given the postage and customs charges, I'm not about to send it back.

Anyway, I've tried it, and it's not a very good set-up! Focusing is
painfully critical (and of course rotates the entire slide copier on
the front of the lens!) and the chromatic aberration at the edges is
absolutely horrible.

Even resized down to 1Mpixel(!) the CA is easily visible.

The dynamic range of most slides is a challenge too, but I think I can
get acceptable results by playing the the camera settings or shooting
raw.

So, I want to try something different. I don't have the budget for a
fantastic new Macro lens, and I'm worried a cheap lens or cheaper
magnifier on the kit lens will have the same problems as the Bower
device (or that half the problem is the kit lens itself).

However, I have got a selection of lenses my Dad used to use with a
Pentax and latterly a Leica. I realise that using these on the Canon
will lose AF (no use anyway!), and aperture control in the camera, but
I'd like to try an adapter ring to see what results I can get.

The problem is, I don't know where to start. What kind of lens would
give edge-to-edge (almost!) sharp images of a 35mm slide? If anyone
can be kind enough to explain that, then I can go for a rummage, and
hopefully ask about a suitable adapter.

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers,
David.

P.S. From what I've read, it seems a decent slide scanner is too
expensive, and too slow.
