The picture spoils the MMYV.COM logo.

Oh, my mistake.

My computer is very old: it doesn't automatically delete to flickr then post
a message to this group.

Anyone have the settings, or do I need a new machine?

Nah, you don't need to take a plasma torch to your machine...
just format the drive and re-load your OS.

Now to Miguel:

Since you already knew it was a very *ordinary* photo , why did you even
bother to post it? The first thing you do when you take a photo is
decide whether or not you like it yourself.

If you like the photo then that's all that's necessary and you don't
need to seek out other's advice.

OTOH: If there is something you'd like to share with others because you
think it's particularly good...then *please* give it some real thought
before you just cavalierly bombard cyberspace with your mundane photography.

Finally, if you are having some particular issue, then sure go ahead and
post the photo and feel free to ask *specific* (rather than vague)
questions.

Good idea, that means I can destroy it while it's powered up - much more
fun.

The original picture we were asked to comment on would've looked better
through welding goggles, however, it has been replaced.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmyv/4126000254/

I'm being very slow at figuring out how this works:

1 Post a link to a picture and ask for comments.
2 If comments were negative, change picture for a better one without telling
anyone.

I'm lost, but I'm guessing

3 If comments were positive, change picture for a really crap one without
telling anyone.

Is there a name for this game?

I have no idea but at one point I seriously considered this guy was a
marketing drone or student psychologist pulling stunts for research
purposes. It's rare but it does happen.

Looking at his collection of photos uniformly shows the most consistently
bad photographs I've ever seen in one place in all my life. They're so bad
they're worse than shutting your eyes and pulling the trigger.

I'm not saying this to put anyone down or put them off. But, fuck. There's a
limit. It's like watching some oxygen starved kid. NO. YOU ARE NEVER GOING
TO BE AN ASTRONAUT. GET OVER IT. FIND ANOTHER HOBBY.

I'm sharpening my caption pencil for the next batch.

I was wondering the same thing...
he talks in a very robotic manner and has a rather non-human way of
*attempting* to communicate.

Guy may be a zoologist?

Anyway...for now at least I'll give him the benefit of the doubt
and make the assumption that he is trying to become a photographer.

Who the fuck has a URL like MMYV.COM?

I was thinking born again zealot with learning difficulties but his Flickr
page says he's an accountant. Hmmm.

Oh, God. He's on Twitter. Aaaaaaaaaaaaagh. It's Christian Christian
Christian Christian Christian Christian and he twitters about it when he
gets a Flickr comment.

And he does videos. *honk*

By this time I'd like to respond you, particularly I try to learn
photography of the best possible form, taking advantage of likewise of this
Usenet New Server that I am paying.

With respect to the Christianity, in reality It is like a vaccine for this
sick world, the cure, that was put to this world the day of Pentecost, It
continues Its course, and nobody will be able to impede the advance.

"So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my
community. And the gates of the underworld can never overpower it." (Matthew
16:18, New Jerusalem Bible)

I think that better you should begin has to do something really useful in
which to spend your time.

Really It would be very interesting to appreciate your advances in
photography and to comment on the matter.

To my understanding one of the objectives of Zen is seeking to discover the
meaning of life without being confused by logic. So to that extent the use
of what many consider to be inappropriate language, is not inconsistent with
his claim. The use of that language does however indicates the release of
inner anger.

I know very little about Zen, but I would much rather be called the c word
than have scriptures rammed down my throat. The former is in everyday usage,
the latter I find insulting therefore irritating. Only if I continually
buried irritation could it come out later as inner anger.

This is why, no matter how hard you try, you will never take a beautiful
photograph. You need to see the beauty in all things in order to find a
way to express it through art. People like you claim the world is ugly,
but it's not. You just prefer to look at everything through an ugly lens.

You're a fearful little troll.

That's a good comment on why rules and attitudes can be counter-productive
or distracting. By spending too much of the wrong sort of time on them we
heap error on error and miss the target. A little openness can allow
insights and abilities to develop on their own.

I've been applying this principle in my photoshoots. I looked for creative
angles, made mistakes, took risks, and stepped back to see what was there.
In many ways the shoot was a disaster but reviewing my pictures later I've
been able to learn from that.

This is a process of discovery and self-discovering. Learning or, rather,
unlearning bad habits so I can see what's there more clearly and relate to
people around me better. It's like riding a bicycle all over again, and
could lead to some magic moments or "happy accidents".

Failure can be the best teacher ...
Then again, some disasters are just fucking disasters. ;-)

> unlearning bad habits so I can see what's there more clearly and relate to

I find "happy accidents" frustrating. Too often I'm left with a great
result and no idea how I did it (how to reproduce it). I think I need to
spend more time looking for what I did right on the photos I like so I can
reproduce the result. It's fun to pretend I had a clue though :D. I
suspect that one day I'll have a portfolio full of "happy accidents" and
I'll be no less clueless than I am today - just better able to place
myself in situations that produce accidents. :-)

Then again, as the saying goes, "A bad day of fishing beats a good day at
work". I took 150 pics last Saturday. I liked 5 (doesn't mean they're any
good, but "I" liked 'em). I had an amazing day though, and met people I
never would have if I did not have my camera pulling me out into the
world. Great fucking hobby. My condolences to those who have to make a
living at it. And my respect to those who can.

Now if I could just afford the glass I want. Meh - food's over-rated.

Excellent description.

Yes my "work" is mostly about finding a point of view on things that
are there already, patterns of light and the irregular regularity of
nature. Sometimes I go out with the "intention" of doing something
specific but real life intervenes and I come back with something
completely different.

Sometimes there's a pattern in the corner of a photo that warrants
further work. Sometimes the photos are technically excellent but
completely uninspiring, or the other way round. I try (or not-try) to
act without thought, and do the thinking later.

Someone once asked Thelonius Monk

"How often does your group rehearse?"

"Rehearse? You mean CHEAT???"
