Supporting free speech requires a little sophistication. If the "supporter" in question doesn't say things like "the power of the press doesn't depend on the size of the press" then it's not a true supporter.
Tocqueville has many more that prove he was a true supporter of free speech.
OTOH take the outspoken champion of free speech for naked Nazi flag burner parades, Robert Siegel of NPR.
Bob never articulated any discernable philosophy on free speech other than he was getting paid to jerryspringer culture wars to censor free speech on tax hikes on his sponsors.
This is not rocket science.
