It can be most anything.
Usenet being what it used to be,
taoism can be a philosophy.

>what does it teach...any scriptures?

There are a couple\few
of what some used to take as seminal
or basic texts: Tao Te Ching, The Chuang-tzu.
Now-a-daze they're referred to as the Daodejing
or maybe Dao De Jing, and The Zhuangzi.

In terms of scripture
there's the Dao Zhang or Tao Tsang.
It's got around 1,120 volumes at present.
Taoism can be a religion of sorts.

As far as what it teaches, well, ymmv.
Ore maybe ommv (One's milage may vary).

Get the book.
Read the book.
Explain your understanding to an evangelical republican.
Eventually one of you might understand.

Hey! This crap server seems to be presenting my drive-by postings.
Prolly won't last long though.
My own current bad server presents Usenet - but it commonly presents a
few posts that might be week or two old.

OH well, - why you tell folks to read Tao stuff when they would prolly
do better reading some commie manifesto thing or some such?

Since we have generally been friendly of sorts and I ain't said 'Hi'
for a while I guess I would say "Thanks, sorta old friend" ;-)

I've of recent got starts for couple sorts of bamboo. Not a grove yet
though. Since I have not been doing so well to keep weeds out of my lawn
I've been acquiring various tall things that I hope to shade and do away
with lawn altogether.

Speaking of groves - Is good to see that there is the pompous and
bitchy as always. Were it to come to folks all saying nice and 'yes' to
each other the place might dry up and blow away.

Maybe come September I will be able to afford to sign onto some sort of
server that has some dependable Usenet. As it has been for some time -
and even last couple days - I cannot depend on one post to the next that
might be published. - Hell, I dunno if I even managed a 'drive-by' in
the last year to inform some asshole that he be an asshole.
There is couple sorts in the world. Them who forget they are assholes
and them who never realized at all.

I have wondered what might become of the fungus under my toenails when
I finally die off in the coming years.

Look up Webster's definition of Philosophy. It is an explanation of
ultimate reality. Some will argue it is broken up into philosophical
Taoism, and Religious Taoism, and...some other Taoism. As an
explanation of Webster's definition it would have to be comprehensive
explanation. Anyway...as an individual, it potentially teaches you how
to maximize contentment in life, which from the religious aspect, is
the key to refining your soul.

Its a shame that these people you will never truly know, your too busy
calling them assholes and they are too busy thinking your an asshole.
do you know what empathy is? maybe they have reasons for being
assholes, acute cocaine addiction, HCC (hypercritical conservativus) or
they might bear grudges against lack of toe hygene

I had forgotten what run originally asked. Thanks!
Here's a facet of Taoism some enjoy quite a bit.

'From The Chuang Tzu
The Secret of Caring for Life

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cook Ting was cutting up an ox for Lord Wen-hui.
At every touch of his hand, every heave of his
shoulder, every move of his feet, every thrust of
his knee-zip! zoop! He slithered the knife along
with a zing, and all was in perfect rhythm, as
though he were performing the dance of the
Mulberry Grove or keeping time to the Ching-shou
music.

"Ah, this is marvelous!" said Lord Wen-hui.
"Imagine skill reaching such heights!"

Cook Ting laid down his knife and replied, "What I
care about is the Way, which goes beyond skill.
When I first began cutting up oxen, all I could
see was the ox itself. After three years I no
longer saw the whole ox. And now-now I go at it by
spirit and don't look with my eyes, Perception and
understanding have come to a stop and spirit moves
where it wants. I go along with the natural
makeup, strike in the big hollows, guide the knife
through the big openings, and follow things as
they are. So I never touch the smallest ligament
or tendon, much less a main joint.

"A good cook changes his knife once a year-because
he cuts. A mediocre cook changes his knife once a
month-because he hacks. I've had this knife of
mine for nineteen years and I've cut up thousands
of oxen with it, and yet the blade is as good as
thought it had just come from the grindstone.
There are spaces between the joints, and the blade
of the knife has really no thickness into such
spaces, then there's plenty of room-more than
enough for the blade to play about in. That's why
after nineteen years the blade of my knife is
still as good as when it first came from the
grindstone."

"However, whenever I come to a complicated place,
I size up the difficulties, tell myself to watch
out and be careful, keep my eyes on what I'm
doing, work very slowly, and move the knife with
the greatest subtlety until-flop! the whole thing
comes apart like a clod of earth crumbling to the
ground. I stand there holding the knife and look
all around me, completely satisfied and reluctant
to move on, and then I wipe off the knife and put
it away."

"Excellent!" said Lord Wen-hui. "I have heard the
words of Cook Ting and learned how to care for
life!"'

Took my mom to eye doctor this morning. Supposedly she is going to be
able to see just great when the cover comes off. In a few weeks they
will do the other eyeball. - After that I suppose she can read them
small instructions, on the back of stuff, to me.

I was surprised a few years ago
when the small print on a map index
could no longer be brought into focus.
It was very strange. Then one day I just
happened to take off my glasses.
Lo and behold, I could read it again!

The eye-dude said that's almost
inevitable after around age 40 or so.
Now I gotta take off the specs to read
every once in a while.

Thanks for the update.

Yea - Dana has his ups and downs. He sent me a newish MB and a TV card
awhile back. - It is PIII board but never been installed. His back does
not let him sit up to computer for very long times.

Mom got the eye guard off this morning and they gave her a kit that she
looks like Ray Charles now. Guess she wear them goggle glasses for a
couple weeks when outdoors.

Seems damned outrageous that there is tiny bottle - $52+ bucks - that
had no instructions but what is on the bottle in tiny little letters
that I doubt that I could have read when my eyes was young. Had to use
strong reading glasses and then the little stronger magnifier on my
magnifying glass to see that it should be stored between 36 and 77 F.

When I forget my reading glasses I do the look through a pinhole in
paper or card thing. That still works. - Even making tiny peekhole
between thumb and crease in finger does the job. - Was not good enough
for that tiny bottle though.

It's interesting to me
what gets people's attention
