My article: "The National Debt or the Obama Debt?", posted on 4/11/12
in humanities.philosophy.objectivism, expressed a personally adopted,
philosophical principle--that being to "avoid socialism as much as
possible". In the state of America, today, a fight against Obama-
style destruction is indeed noble. My style of socialism aversion can
accomplish a lot for the private sector. However, considering that
Ayn Rand held that one's own life should be an individual's standard
of value, I don't mean to be too hard on the Patriots for Capitalism.
So, if one adopts my principle to "avoid socialism as much as
possible", how does one implement it in everyday life?
Well, for starters, identify areas in your life saturated with
socialism in which it would be practical to switch to the private
sector.
(1) Does one participate in a branch of illegitimate government? Get
a position in rational government or a job in the private sector.
(2) Does one receive unpaid for medicine from a government doctor?
See a private one and pay for what you get.
(3) Does one raid the public library for "free" books and movies?
Stop going there, and buy from Amazon.
(4) Does your teenager plan to go to the state college because it is
"cheaper" than a private one? Try to interest him or her in an Ayn
Rand Bookstore self-education.
(5) Do you take the kids to the annual "community" festival? Drive
them to a private amusement park, instead.
Next, think of ways you can *lessen* your use of, or involvement in
socialized environments.
(1) If you ride the public train into the city, choose to drive in
your private car.
(2) Mail less letters USPS. Convert the reoccurring bill payments to
electronic form.
(3) Consider the fact that socialism-promoting television has gotten
so bad that you may decide to no longer get your news from the
mainstream media. Be vigilant when viewing news clip video online.
Don't give the propaganda much of a chance to poison you.
Consider the implications of "tough" socialized markets and minimize
your use, but maintain practicality so you are true to "your own life"
as the central standard of value.
(1) Turn off all of the lights in a room if you are going to leave it
for more than five minutes. However, don't read with so little light
that it will deteriorate your eyesight.
(2) Take showers of reasonable duration, in comfort; but don't overdo
it.
(3) Try to only drive on public roads when you have to--with a defined
purpose and destination. Find alternative entertainment to "joy
rides".
In essence, fight socialism by depriving it of your acclimation; but
don't rack yourself with guilt if something that you should be able to
avoid isn't practical to do away with. And above all, as a reward,
take pleasure in all things private.
