In a new video for his educational non-profit, conservative commentator
Dennis Prager explains why "eye for an eye" is "one of the greatest
ideas in history." [1] Comparing the scriptures to other ancient codes
of conduct, Prager explains why the Bible is the cornerstone of Western
Civilization.

"Even atheists acknowledge that the book that is most responsible for
creating Western civilization is the Bible," Prager says. "Until very
recently, that was considered quite an achievement."

He continues: "After all, it was Western civilization that created
societies rooted in individual liberty, rooted in democracy, that
affirmed the equality of all people, and which gave the world the
notion of universal human rights. Of course, these unique moral ideals
took centuries to be realized, and the ideals were often violated. But
only the West formulated these ideals, let alone achieved them... and
then spread them around the world."

As "reverence for Western civilization fell, so did reverence for the
source of that civilization," he says. "The Bible has not only been
neglected, but reviled — as a foolish fairy tale at best, and as an
immoral work at worst. This view springs not from intellectual rigor,
but from intellectual laziness."

Prager maintains that there are rational and moral responses to the all
of the objections to the Bible. As an example, he points to two
difficult biblical laws: the law of the "rebellious son" and lex
talionis, or "eye for an eye." Rather than being the "primitive" laws
as they've been portrayed, he maintains, they in fact presented an
"enormous leap forward" in creating civilized society: the rebellious
son law ensured due process and ended the concept of parents "owning"
their children, while "eye for an eye" was "the ultimate statement of
human equality."

Dems & the media want Trump to be more like Obama, but then he'd

Since Jesus told his followers not to do this, but instead forgive, Prager is
saying christianity is one of the worst ideas in history.

It wasn't. The foundations were laid by prechristian greeks, romans, and
germans. European christianity is built on this foundation.

They weren't. Those appeared sporadically and appeared before Jesus. Christian
influence grew as the western empire fizzled out.

Some still hold that parents own their children and Childrens Welfare is
illegal. More generally the concept wasn't displaced until a hundred to two
hundred years ago. The ultimate pre-enlightment statement of humanity equality
wasn't until Paul's missionary argument for the moral equivalence of humans.

Christianity kickstarted the Enlightment and scientific method, but that was
built on existing foundations rather creating civilisation ab inito.

The _lex talionis_ _is_ a enormous leap forward, but not for the reasons
he gives. If someone harms me, I want to (assuming I have the strength)
beat the little bastard into a pulp before cutting off his goolies,
burning them before his eyes, and torturing him slowly to death. (We see
the same sort of thing when someone pulls a gun or a knife for nothing
more than a perceived slight.) The _lex talionis_ puts a limit to the
revenge I can exact.
