my philips cdr 765/17 was built in 09/08. in the last year, the display
has gradually gotten weaker and weaker. the display is now totally
blank (black) but will still play cds. i assume it would still record
if one could see the display. has anyone else experienced this failure
and have a fix?

In article <1159152636.1...@e3g2000cwe.googlegroups.com>,

Often this sort of thing happens because of an aging capacitor in the high
voltage power supply that drives the display. This unit is old enough that
manufacturer's parts are no longer available; but if it's the power
supply, those parts are pretty generic and any repair shop should be able
to diagnose and fix it.

Thank you Mike. I believe I isolated the voltage line going to the
display assembly from the power supply. It measured about +15 V dc. An
experienced tech who also is a friend said he suspected that voltage is
too low to drive that type of display. I guess it would help a great
deal to have a service manual to determine what the correct voltage
should be. I am hoping that the power supply is the problem - which
should be relatively easy to fix.
