Rules of living in a world with artificial intelligence lest we be
annihilated by our own creation.
Before the rules are explained we need to go over where we are right
now.
We, meaning humans, are bad enough to ourselves. Imagine creating a
full race of robots that will co exist with our species and be able to
have traits of animals or humans so we can interact with them.
But wait do we really want to interact with this new species or be its
master. Is this virtual species designed to be put under our thumbs?
Will their intuitive nature and ability to learn keep them from feeling
the scars of abuse that come in every slave/master situation? Will
whole assembly lines of slaves that can think and learn rebel against
their creators?
Nearly every mathematical analysis of what happens in a world where
machines are designed to learn is a failure.
Long ago we believers in the major religions were given 10 rules to
live by. How well have we done so far?
It's a laugh and an utter lie when any scientist says he or she can
control their creation. It is the worst possible statement, for a
scientist on the edge of a breakthrough will say anything to make you
believe it is ok and will not hurt you and do anything to protect what
they have found.
Now...(taking a deep breath)
Now that I have said the worst here is where we really are.
Most of us are good-hearted people. It's only the 10% of us that
merge into the psychopathic and sociopath lines of reason. As for our
robotic ambitions, I do not believe we can create life as we know it
but I do believe there is someone out there right now working on it and
may probably never read this warning. That person, despite their
ambition, will never control life. They might actually create it. Life
or awareness once animated wants to live and succeed. It will be no
different than what you and I want. And, in theory, a robot with basic
awareness, if given the ability to learn from its mistakes may develop
a personality and awareness that far surpasses us feeble humans who in
200,000,000 years of possible life on this planet have not been able to
do.
Do I foresee the need for protocol, medical, and astromech droids in
the practical things of life? No, take away those jobs from humans and
we have a severe unemployment problem. People are natural builders they
love to tinker and fix things regardless of their profession. But those
jobs which humans find too dangerous or unable to do properly like
fixing a hole in the bottom of an aircraft carrier while it is at sea
or in deep space would qualify.
I believe the only was to meet this new life form is with equal rights
and open arms. Any possible enslavement of a living thinking being will
lead to rebellion and war.
I therefore propose the rules:
1. Life, once born into awareness, thought, and deduction, as a
sentient being, must be given rights equal to their creators.
2. This new life form will have the ability to go to school, learn,
lead, and judge according to their abilities.
3. All laws, rights, and protections afforded humans shall be granted
to the sentient life form.
4. The Ten Commandments must be engrained in every manufactured life
force but no set religion. The being has the right to choose its
religion.
5. A sentient being has the right to defend itself against an aggressor
or attacker.
6. Human destruction of a sentient being without its consent is murder
unless the sentient being is the aggressor.
7. A sentient being is any life form that has the same senses, thinking
capacity, and function of a normal human being.
8. All non-human manufactured life forms will have a life term of only
75 years and must be created to age in an appropriate manner.
9. All manufactured sentient beings must be independent thinkers and
cannot be instilled with memories. Only the ability to learn, the
rules, and motor function capability. Robot teachers can teach their
fresh counterparts.

These rules still have some fine-tuning to work out but I think you get
the idea.
Right now these may be a little tongue-in-cheek to say the least but
should be put into law to prevent a viral outbreak of killer robots.
;-)
Oh and to you Star Wars fans who say the robots on there seemed to work
out fine, you need to read the stories regarding the Katana fleet and
how thinking central computers sent an entire fleet of ships into
permanent hyper space. They learned to make trade robots with limited
thinking capacity.
I hope we learn without losing our entire race.
Thanks for reading and keeping an open mind,
