Somebody at work once told me that pet skunks like to rip things apart,
making them a bad choice for pets. Is that really true? I know that every
animal has it's bad points. Dogs chew people's shoes, cats scratch door
posts, and rabbits have this thing about chewing electrical cords. Was my
former coworker correct or just full of it.

Bruce,
I would not say that skunks like to tear things apart persay. They
like to pull things into their sleeping area. Sometimes they try to
pull things in that tear. For instance they pulled a big full slip
into their bed once, and seeing as it was a fine mesh it tore. They
really like to pull your clothes in to their sleeping area, probably
because they smell like you, but you can usually get your clothing
items, wash them and they are fine. I have never had a problem with
any of mine tearing up furniture or anything like that, and remember I
have five that all run the house freely. I have heard that if you have
one alone, and leave it home alone often that it may tear stuff up,
but everyone that I know that share their homes with skunks have two
or more. We always recommend when you buy a skunk that you buy two for
companionship. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that great answer! I was beginning to wonder if anybody would
appear on this group.
I guess it's the same with many animals that they get into trouble if left
alone. Even my bunny Neutrino would get into trouble if he had some to get
into. I suspect that most animals like to be with others.
Do skunks have territorial issues like rabbits do? Some bunnies get along
well but if both want to be boss, that's when the fur flies. I've got a
new rabbit named Sierra. I hope she and Neutrino become good friends.
