'It's just gone crazy': Mice are overwhelming these Bay Area neighborhoods

Mice are not uncommon denizens of the hilly, waterside neighborhoods of
Benicia and Vallejo in Solano County. But this year, they seem to be
taking over — moving into garages, homes and businesses, chewing through
drywall, nesting in ovens and under the hoods of cars.

“It’s just gone crazy,” said Maria Talacona, an owner of Benicia’s Mighty
Men Pest Control, which provides service across the Bay Area. “We used to
do a couple of houses a month in the (Benicia/east Vallejo) area but now
we’re doing 13-14. I just got off the phone with someone who wants us to
do eight condos. I’ve never seen it at this level before.”

Accounts on NextDoor also indicate that mice are running wild in the area,
with scores of comments in the past couple of weeks answering a post from
a woman wondering if anyone else was having a problem with mice.

She is, her neighbors say, not alone. Scores of residents in Benicia and
in the Glen Cove waterfront community in east Vallejo responded with
stories of mice gathering outside their homes — visible on streets and
sidewalks — and sneaking their way inside as well.

Once inside, they’ve taken up residence inside heating ducts and in the
backs of ovens. One woman posted that they’ve been chewing through soup
containers in her garage, while others said the mice have started nesting
under the hoods of their cars, gnawing at electrical wires and causing car
damage.

One even reported seeing a mouse snatch a banana off a kitchen table.

Talacona, who has video of mice eating a hole in drywall, said most of the
calls to Mighty Men involve problems with mice rather than rats. It’s not
unusual to see an increase in calls about rodents this time of year, she
said, but the surge in calls in the Benicia-Vallejo area significantly
outpaces any other part of the Bay Area.

What’s behind the surge is unknown, but pest control experts believe it’s
a confluence of topography and weather and maybe a couple of other
factors.

Troy Fisher, president of Official Pest Prevention, said the Benicia-
Vallejo area, with its hilly topography near a large body of water, makes
it a perfect place for mice to congregate as they come out of the hills
and are hemmed in by the water.

This year, weather also played a role, with a relatively cool summer
following an unusually wet winter, said Dan Stropshire, Official Pest
Prevention’s Northern California operations manager.

It's because of the Democrats.
