Since our three rats are going to be looked after by my brother-in-law
(who can be a bit of a flake) for two weeks, we decided to put a single,
big 1-liter Lixit bottle in the cage, so that even if he forgets to
check the water, there would be enough to get them through. Mounted it
on the cage, but when I walked by a half hour later, and noticed it was
still dripping. Turns out the ball was badly seated in the tube and
would not make a good seal. Could be we just got a one-in-a-thousand,
but it indicates poor quality control by the manufacturer, and would
have left our rats without water after a day or two. Instead, we put two
500-ml Bibi bottles in the cage, both of which stopped dripping within
seconds. Possibly, these brands are only distributed in Europe, but I'd
advise avoiding the Lixit brand bottles wherever they're sold.

I posted a while back about a defective Superpet water bottle that wouldn't
let water into the spout at all.

Seems best to me to have at least 2 water bottles from different
manufacturers in each cage. Especially if you plan on leaving the animals
unattended for a couple/few days.
