You might want to try to make something fancier later (as I might too),
similar to the fleece-lined deals you can find in the stores, but I took
inspiration from the below picture for a make-shift, cheap solution for the
time being:

http://www.ratpalace.com/images/gallery/page3/1-2205-sammy2.jpg

They use Handi-Wipes, as you can see, which I thought was pretty ingenious,
especially as they can just be thrown away after awhile instead of having to
be laundered. I actually use an old diaper (the large flat kind folded in
half, not the pre-folded ones, though those might work okay too) and then
clothes-pins around the sides of the cage--a total of eight clothes-pins for
ours.

It ain't pretty, admittedly, the way I have it done, but I can easily adjust
the tension and also get it out easily for washing. They really love it,
and it's adorable to see them cuddled up in it sleeping together.

barb...@ntlworld.com says...

Never say never. I've seen and heard quite a few rats who adore their
hammock, never sleeping anywhere else. Even adults rats have taken
immediately to hammocks given to them, so it isn't even something that
must be learned from babyhood.

Mine, however, prefer to chew it down and then rip the hammock itself to
shreds. We stick to hand towels for their bedding, as I can't sew and it
would be absolutely absurd to buy a new hammock every time they chewed
it up.

I'm glad you found them helpful, Jupiter. The rat in the Handi-Wipe hammock
is not mine, though he certainly does look very happy. :) I also saw
another site that suggested simply slitting the corners of a piece of fabric
and then tying it on the cage (I presume with a thick kind of
fabric...fuzzy-like maybe, or fake fur or such would be good, I think, as
anything else would likely unravel and fray too easily).

Ours certainly do like their hammock, but they've become acclimated as
babies. For an older rat, the suggestion of putting a treat in the hammock
to entice them into it does sound like a good idea. Let us know how it
goes.

Hmmm... I made a hammock for my two ratties last night, just a simple
sewing job with turned in seams to try and stop them chewing right
through immediately, fleecy with a tougher backing, and string sewn to
each corner.

Put it in the cage today, and my rats have been climbing on it, at first
not too sure of themselves, wobbling all over the place. Went in to
check up on them just now, and they're curled up asleep in it, using
each other as pillows :-) So cute! And it beats how they usually sleep -
I put a nice box in there with soft bedding, but they much prefer
curling up underneath the spout of the water bottle (I hate the smell of
wet rat) or curled up on top of the box, which means they get a nasty
surprise if they go to sleep near the edge cause they fall off! With the
hammock's upturned sides they won't fall out (I hope).

Anyway, my rats seemed to like it, but as ever YMMV.

I know, isn't that cool? I want to at least try some branches, too, when I
finally get a larger cage (soon hopefully, a Martin's one).

It's interesting how using or adding a few different words to a search
(Google for me) will bring up totally new sites that you've never run across
before...in this case just using the words "rats" and "hammock."

get a large enough cage (a Martin's one soon, hopefully).

Interesting what new sites you can find just by altering the words in your
search a bit (Google for me)...this found by entering just the words "rats"
and "hammock."

I'd heard lots of people say their rats loved hammocks, so when I
finished building the new cage for my girls (both about a year old at
this point) I put one in. They ignored it completely (well. Eris
decided that one of the clips needed to be removed, and nearly chewed
it off before I got at it with the duct tape, but other than that they
ignored it).

Then I went away for a week and left them with the boyfriend's
parents. I moved the hammock to a different spot in the cage, and lo
and behold now they like it. So if they seem less than enthusiastic,
try shifting it around to a few different spots.

Also, what Eris really likes is this empty margarine tub I have wired
up in one corner. She spends a lot of time curled up napping in
there. (That's why I put it there -- when she was little she used to
curl up in the food bowl, so this is kind of a larger version.)

No, it's just big enough that she fits curled up in it. It originally
held one pound of margarine. I don't think a larger container would
work so well, because it would have taller sides (harder to get into
and out of) and wouldn't have that nice comforting sense of being
surrounded.

Right now Metis is asleep in the margarine tub, and Eris is flopped
out in the hammock.

After reading this thread, I rigged up a hammock too. My rat doesn't get

Hm. Be prepared for extremely lazy rats. Mine won't move out of it, and
when I open the cage to get them out, they cling on to their fleecy
hammock with all four feet and squeak, though I know I'm not hurting
them. They've turned into complete sybarites!

He-he. I was reading an article recently about the characteristics of
'owners' of different kinds of animals, the author proposing that rat people
tend to be highly intelligent, as might be expected considering how smart
their furry buddies are. Reading someone on this NG describe their ratties
as "complete sybarites" certainly helps confirm that theory for me,

Heh :-) It's the perfect word to describe my girls, though. I have an
elderly guinea-pig, too, and used to keep mice and goldfish (but not
together) - what does that say about me?

I just looked again, and I'm afraid the article was really focused mainly on
rat lovers (Rat and Mouse Gazette, Nov/Dec 1997, Tidbits - Rat Lover
Attributes, by Patricia Whipple...thanks again, v.!), though the author did
also describe her thoughts about those who own bearded collies as a way of
illustrating her point (my precocious senility at work again on thinking the
article included more kinds of animals than that).

The other rat lover attributes besides intelligence that she wrote about
were a strong sense of fairness ("It bothers us that an animal we know has
so many great attributes is scorned by so many."), a need to be different,
and, finally, being extremely friendly.

Personally, I think that someone who has also had a GP, mice, and goldfish
is obviously a fairly eclectic, benevolent person with good subconscious
grounding (the water element there) and circumspection (not keeping the mice
and goldfish together <g>). I think I'll take this act on the
road...personality readings based on what pets you have. ;)

Thank you, people.

My boyfriend made 2 hammocks, denim material and paper clips this
weekend. They adore it! The boys even put a kitchen paper on. Anyway
I will need to wash it soon because they piss all over it. It is such

The best thing on the world, really. And so simple! Probably it is
good for the muscles, too.

Last year I started a new job, and the first day all us new people - 30 -
had to endure a night-long meeting with our future boss, who tried to be
friendly and funny, with very sad results.
One of the very "funny" things to do together, that evening, was writing on
a piece of paper the name of our favourite animal.
Obviusly I wrote RAT, many others wrote CATS and DOGS, others chose
different animals - most of them TIGER - and one girl opted for SNAKE.
Then the clever boss asked every one of us why we choose that animal,
explaining it with a few adjectives.
The cat people said "pretty and lovely", dog people said "faithful playful
and intelligent", I said "intelligent cunning and inquisitive", the people
who chose the tiger said "magnificent, dangerous and beautiful" and the
snake girl said just "vicious".
The incredibly funny and clever boss explained that the qualities you find
in your favourite animal are your own qualities.
I would like to show you the pictures of the people who chose the dangerous
tiger, just for a laugh, but I had no camera...
Anyway, whan it was my turn, the boss told me to be careful with the "snake"
girl, because as nature goes she would eat me.
We were speachless.
I left the job after 4 months because all the supervisors were amoebas.
