This evening my wife noticed a place on the underside of Pippy's neck. It
is a long, narrow red place stretching from the underside of her mouth
about an inch back straight towards her belly. It looks like some kind of
wound, but it's not bleeding or oozing, at least not that I can tell.

She doesn't "act" hurt, and is still the same wonderful rat - her behavior
hasn't changed. She and Squidgy never fight, though they will occasionally
play-fight for a moment or two when they're frisky.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I thought of scratching, but it's such
a neat, straight line.

I wouldn't worry too much if she seems well in herself. Just keep an eye on
it for any change.
What bedding do you use? I did at one time use paper from my shredder until
I thought maybe some of the harsher papers might cause a papercut. Is it
possibly a papercut? They would make a straight line.

Nah, we use "critterCare", this fluffy brown stuff.

I hope it's just from scratching. We've never trimmed their nails, so
they're quite sharp. I looked again last night and maybe it's not such a
neat line after all. It's hard to get a good look at it, because she won't
stand still! :-)

I'll monitor it for any change. Hopefully it'll be gone in a week or so. I
don't know what else I can do.

:) If I want to look underneath any of mine, I offer a titbit high up the
outside of cage so they reach up for it, showing all. Then give them it when
I'm done.
I use small nail clippers to do my rats nails. It's usually a two man job
though. :)
If it's just a superfilious scratch, it'll probably heal pretty quick and I
wouldn't worry about it.

i believe someone once posted here that it was a good idea to put a rock in
the cage for them to clime onto becuase it allows them to grind down their
nails, somewhat like a file.
