I would like to get a reptile pet some time in the future (perhaps in a few
years), but I'm concerned that this might not be an ethical thing to do
because I want to make sure that I don't buy any type if animal that was
taken out of a wild environment.

Are most of them captive-bred?

Also I'm a little bit worried because I have been reading statistics about
how many pet reptiles die before their normal lifespan is up. I would feel
terrible if I got a snake, lizard, or turtle and they became ill and died
because I didn't care for them properly. Are there some good books that
someone can recommend to help me learn how to care for them? Are some
reptiles easier to care for than others?

Don't get me wrong, IF I decide to get one, I'd do whatever I had to do to
take care of them properly, and I don't expect things to be simple, but I am
wondering what books or other resources I should be reading to inform
myself. I've heard the books in pet stores are usually outdated and carry
mis-information (such as the idea that it's ok to feed iguanas meat).

Hi

theres plenty of reptiles you could keep, you didnt say what country your
in, but i guess its the same world wide....

CB=captive bred
WC=wild caught.

Corn snakes or simular are usually CB, a GOOD pet shop should help you,
please dont buy any WC stuff, i have rescued WC stuff, and its wrong,
theres a lot to choose from so ask more or look on the web but welcome
anyway!

Thanks, I agree that it's wrong to buy wild caught animals. :)

When u decide what reptile u are going to keep I would recommend (from
personal experience) specialist book series (about your chosen reptile) by
Philippe de Vosjoli.
I have kept Burmese Pythons, Boas, Bullsnakes & various others, and always
had these books. I find them very useful & informative.
They cover all the required subjects regarding the particular species, and
in an easy to understand way.

Thank you for the reference. I'll check that out at the library. I'm hoping
maybe to get an iguana one day but a snake isn't out of the question.

If you desire truly captive bred animals; only buy from a quality
breeder. Local herp societies should help put you in contact with
breeders. Most pet stores don't know what's captive bred or wildcaught.
They only know what the dealer told them it was if they even asked.

Ok, how would I find one of these "herp societies?" I'd love to be able to
be more informed, and I obviously will have to learn a lot before I would
take on the responsibility of caring for a reptile. I'm not even sure where
to begin here.

Thank you. ^_^ I appreciate your help and everyone else who has helped me in
this NG. If I have any specific questions I'll be sure to come back later
and see what you guys have to say.

I love animals, including reptiles, I even held baby snakes in my backyard
before I was school age (they used to love a certain place of rocks), before
I knew they might be poisonous, yet they never bit me, because I was gentle
with them.

I also enjoyed picking up anole lizards and amphibians like toads and frogs,
as well as other creatures I found. Those early backyard encounters are what
made me decide I wanted to be a zoologist.

I've never had a reptile pet before but I'm hoping that I can learn as much
as possible and then be able to have one. I won't get one until I know that
I know enough though, that's why I'm making such an effort to find out where
to go for correct info.

It's so nice to see someone putting some thought into what reptile is
best for their circumstances versus impulse buying. I'm sure when you
make the final decision to own a reptile it will be a good choice. Be
sure to let us know what reptile will be lucky enough to live with you.
