Hi
I've seen a lot of posts recently about using echinacea as an immunity
booster for rats. As this is a substance used for humans too, I am presuming
its safe for rabbits. does anybody have experience of this, and what doses
are reccomended?
Thanks in advance for any help.

My daughters mini-lop had pseudomanas, and sneezed from the day she brought her
home from the breeder. White stuff would come out of her nose, breathing
labored. Well, it was bad! The bunnie was put on Baytril injections for 2
weeks, off for a week, then another series of shots. This went on for 7
months. Soon as she was taken off baytril, sneezing and white stuff started up
again. She finally out of desperation started putting Echinacea drops in the
bunnys water every day. 5-7 drops, this along with the baytril. With in 2
weeks the sneezing stopped, and never came back..
It could be that the baytril finally took hold, or maybe the echinacea enhanced
the immune system. and the bunny was able to fight off the bacteria. I don't
know. The bunny is now 2 yrs old. and is health. ornery, and has bonded with a
cutie black satin.

Echinacea is a very pretty flower with medicinal properties. It has become
quite popular as an immune system booster. It used to be available only as a
tincture which you added to water or tea (giving the drink a very odd
flavour), but now it is available in other forms as well, such as capsules or
tea. It is recommended that it NOT be taken on a daily basis or the immune
system comes to depend on it. I myself take it only when I'm coming down
with a cold. According to some folks here on apr, it is also effective with
bunnies who are struggling with pasturella or similar immune challenging
illnesses.

So there you go!

Hi

I only know what the dosage would be for 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 lb buns. If you get
the chewable kind, with directions to take two, two to three times a day, you
can split one into approximately 1/3 tablet, and give twice a day. These taste
pretty good, and rabbits love them. Do not give them constantly, give it a
break, such as one week on, a couple of days off, or for more serious illnesses,
do two weeks on, 4 or 5 days off. You can also get non-alcohol based drops, and
3 to 4 drops twice a day is fine.

My friend says vitamin C is good also. You can give 200 mg twice a day, but look
out for diarrhea, some rabbits cannot handle that much. My friend did not have
have a problem with her buns using it.

With vitamin E, prick a hole in a 100 mg capsule, and let most of the oil out.
Give once a day, but I would only do this, the echinachea, and the C short term,

you do not want them getting used to it. These things give them a boost when
they
are sick.

BJ

At a store called Vitamin World they have alcohol free echinacea. I give it to
my rabbits on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. They only get one drop apiece.
We have a lop that has (sorry had) wet droppings. Since he has been on
echinacea his droppings have been perfect. He likes the stuff straight, they
others want it with pineapple or the like.

Hi David,
I just wanted to say that when my rabbit had wet droppings (mushy poops, not
liquid diarrhea) that it was a diet related problem in that he was getting too
many pellets and not enough fiber in the form of grass hay like timothy. Once
we had him on the proper diet his mushy poops cleared up.

Hi Kris:
(I'm posting this and sending it to your e-mail)

First let me thank you for your response. I have posted a number of times and no
one ever responded, thank you, thank you, thank you. This bunny (Bloomer) we have
had for just over three months, since our little Cookie past away February 26th of
this year. Bloomer is three years old and was a hutch bunny until he was rescued
from Bunny Express (a HRS type org). We slowly changed his diet to Oxbows Bunny
Basic T (which all of our bunnies eat) and of course unlimited timothy hay and oat
hay (mostly timothy). He has now been on Bunny Basic T for a little over two
months now and he still had wet droppings. Bloomer has been on echinacea now for
just about two weeks and his wet droppings have all but gone away. Of course our
bunnies also get salads and plenty of exercise.

Actually, it's probably something kind of in between "ee" and "ay".
