There's a raccoon who sometimes visits our walled backyard. Is there a
reason to worry about leaving my bunny in the yard unwatched?

Oh yes! Raccoons will eat ANYTHING they can catch. They are related to
bears & are omnivorous. This sounds cruel but you should trap the coon or
have it destroyed because if it is a female it will bring her babies and
you will have several generations visting your wall.Never feed them you
will NEVER get rid of them if you do.They are appealing things but like
bears they can be dangerous to your bunny & YOU!! Nancy,Kathy &

I used to keep my rabbit food and cat food outdoors. The raccoons
came by and stole the cat food. They chewed through the plastic
container to get to the food. Now that I keep the cat food indoors
they don't come by. They're not interested in the rabbit food which I
still keep outside.

it does sound cruel, and maybe I'd say trap and release the raccoon
rather than have it destroyed - but a wildlife expert would know better.
If I recall, raccoons give people (and other creatures) rabies more
than most anything else... So they really aren't generally safe to have
around. And DEFINITELY not around your bunny, or any pet. They will
kill and eat whatever they can catch.

Raccoons are not only predators towards rabbits, but they also carry a
very nasty roundworm. http://www.hrschicago.org/rabbitfr.html

This roundworm can infect rabbits, dogs, humans, etc. There is no
known cure for your rabbit if he or she becomes infected. It can live
for years in the soil.

A raccoon who wants to attack a rabbit will go to great lengths to get
him or her, and most cages are not a deterrent. Raccoons have been
known to grab a rabbit through a cage and maul them. With their agile
hands, they can open many latches and door hooks that a human can
open. Just having a raccoon on the outside looking in and trying to
get your rabbit can cause your rabbit to die from fright.

Thanks for the informative answers! I had my first encounter with a racoon
a couple nights ago in my back yard. He/she was walking along the top of a
block wall between our house and the neighbor's, and starting to come down
into our yard when he saw me. I chased him away with prejudice (don't ask)
but started to wonder if he was terrorizing our bunnies in their cages at
night, so I brought them inside. Good to know this.

Had the same experience as James - a bag of cat food keep getting eaten at
night and I didn't know why, until now!

You bet there is!

A raccoon will rip your rabbit to shreds.
