My rabbit will stomp for hours and mostly at night. This is very annoying
especially when you are trying to sleep. What can be done about this?

Your bunny is trying to warn you about something - maybe a strange noise
he can hear but you can't or a smell that is unhealthy or something -
Pepper has done that from time to time and I will get up and check
around for something wrong and then cuddle him a bit and sometimes walk
around so that he can see that everything is ok.
There was an article on one of the bunny sites about a bunny making
noise and he saved the whole family from a wire starting a fire - they
all got out in time because they paid attention to the warning.
It may be nothing but it could be something - maybe a strange dog by the
window - who knows - but he is not doing it for nothing.
Scented things are bad for bunnies(and people) - is there something like
that around which is not vented as well at nite as it is during the day.

Hello,

It seems odd that your rabbit stomps for hours. Does this happy every
night? Is your rabbit in a different area of the house at night than
during that day? Is there another animal in the house that could be
bothering your rabbit? Is there anything moving in his/her area that
could scare him? Does he stomp only at certain times of the night?

I guess that he could be mad or upset if he normally runs free, but then
you confine him at night. In that case, I would think he would stomp a
lot in the beginning, and then calm down.

What a mystery. This is not going to be elementary, Watson. You'll need
to put some clues together about area, time of day, environment, noises,
smells, mood, etc. to see if you can find out what's
scaring/bothering/upsetting your rabbit.

Good luck.

Or another animal outside the house. My rabbits, particularly Hulot, a brown
and white mini lop who was found dumped in a forest preserve a few months after
one Easter, and has very good instincts, thumps when raccoons are on the roof.
The raccoons look in the upstairs window at the rabbits sometimes, and Hulot
was the one who alerted me to this. I do not leave the windows open with the
screen at night anymore. It would be very easy for a raccoon to rip a window
screen and get inside. You may want to listen to your rabbit, he may be warning
of something that you are just unaware of.

This morning at 6 am (and I went to bed at 2!!!), I was wakened by the
mad scrambling of little bunny feet (sounding like 1000 bunnies) and
then thump thump thump thump thump thump thump.... Have never heard
anything like it. Of course, I got up to investigate, just in time to
see the other bunny go scrambling under the sofa. Both, especially,
Tika (who set off the alarm), have been really skittish all day. Can't
figure out what frightened them so. And of course, I'm going away this
weekend......

And to think that I didn't want to have children!

Our rabbit Ebineezer stomps at night because he can hear environmental
noises and he wants to warn you. He also stomps if the ferrets are
anywhere close. The ferrets love him but he doesn't care for them.
Ebineezer loves our Pug and Chihuahua. His cage is open all the time inside
our home. If he heres a noise he doesn't like he also hops in a little box
that he used to sleep in as a baby. He looks like Godzilla in the tiny
box. He is a very gentle male rabbit who hangs his head out to be petted
and gives kisses every morning:)) He is seven years old and is a black mini
lop.

Something must be bothering them terribly - does this stomping only
start after you have fallen asleep?? - If so - maybe you snore or
something and it scares them - When Pepper slept in my room, my
breathing would sometimes bother him and I had to tell him that it was
ok - Does you fridge rattle at nite? - Could someone be lurking around?
- Also, with all of this stomping you need to check his hocks and make
sure they are not worn.

It's funny you never know what will make bunnys stomp. If I clean my
telephone in between the buttons with a rag and make them rattle, Sophie's
eyes get really big and she stomps. Sometimes she stomps and nothing is
going on that I can tell. There has to be some noise or something that
happens at night that's freaking your bunny out.

Now I am growing quite concerned. This morning (5:30 a.m.) I was
awakened again by the stomping. Now, as I write, Tibs (not Tika -- I
figured that one out wrong -- it was too early in the morning) is under
the loveseat thumping away. I haven't a clue what could be upsetting
her -- there is nothing different awound here that *I* can tell... Do
bunnies thump if they're not feeling well? Wish I could solve this
puzzle before I leave tomorrow for a weekend in Vancouver. Can't take
them with me, because I will be sharing lodgings with a Jack Russell
Terror! (Have a good bunny sitter, though).

Bunnies!

No, I'm in a house -- not an apartment. I really don't think there are
any new noises/smells happening. I was suspecting that cat "activity"
might have triggered this behaviour, but even that is not so uncommon
around here (though I've noticed it excalating lately!). (Wish my
neighbours would get their cats spayed/neutered <grrrr>).

Tonight we had a thunderstorm. Do you think she might have sensed it
two days in advance?

She's quiet now. Both of them are under the loveseat and quiet.
Haven't been able to check her hocks today. Maybe when I do the bit
with the papaya before bed.

Oh well, I'm sure she is okay, but wish I could observe her over the
weekend. Talked to the vet today, who was pretty sure that it IS
behavioural, and not medical. Vet suggested that maybe Tibs is reacting
to my going away? How could she know??? I've always suspected that
bunnies are psychic, but....

Phew - glad to hear that you have a good sitter - I was wondering.

What about smells??? - at nite the area is not as well vented as during
the day - do you have scented things around? - mine will react to that -
I have nothing scented here now but if someone comes in with something
on they stomp and run - do you live in an apartment? - what time of the
morning does your paper get delivered? - are people rattling the walls
at nite? It is a mystery, but once you have it figured out, you will
laugh at how silly is may seem to you but how serious it is to them.
You almost have to consciously walk through your house and environment
to understand and examine every little unexpected thing.
Did you check the hocks?
Good luck and have fun in Vancouver - wish I were coming with you.

Maybe a cat is looking in through a window? A cat showed up on my patio
everyday for about a week and made my bunnies thump.

Hi Michele,

Last winter we had a family of mice running around our room at night. They
really upset Joepie, they stole food from him and ran through his cage.
Apart from the fact that it was an unhygienic situation for the bun, it was
very stressful for him.
He wasn't only stomping a lot, he was hardly eating and so stressed we
locked him in his cage and put his cage on a glass table we had because the
mice couldn't get to him there. We had to do this until the last mouse was
gone (I'm such a softie, I cried when we placed the traps, can't kill an
animal).
Sometimes it's quite clear why he stomps, like when I drop something that
makes a noise, or he hears dog bark outside, but also if we change the
"furniture" in his cage, or when it takes too long in his book for me to
bring his bowl of food. (mommy I'm sooooo hungry, where's my FOOOOOOD)
One evening he thumped for almost five minutes, looking at us with this
wild, frantic look in his eyes, scaring the hell out of us, we immediately
inspected the apartment, but never found out what was wrong. I sat with him
for a while, petting him and talking to him to calm him.

Just keep your ears and eyes open, maybe look for mouse droppings (oh so
tiny). Good luck !!!

Layla
Joepie : Don't let them watch "Bambi". I learned a lot from Thumper, ya
know, he's so cool !!!

All right guys, I have a problem right now. Poor Trixie's in a tizzy. I moved
this weekend. Now I made sure that she was the last part of the move (at first
she thought she was going to the vet and chewed a small hole in the side of her
soft carrier) but now she's going nuts! First, when we got to the new place,
since I didn't have room for her cage inside until after all the boxes were in
place, I set up her cage outside (it's that giant four story thing anyway, so
she wasn't in much danger of having lack of room to go to). She was actually
happy with this, I think because of the cool breeze. But then I brought her
inside. First she was okay, but it took us a while to figure out where her
food was (I wasn't the only one packing, but I was apparently the only oen
labling boxes, so her hay was thrown in an empty computer box, very difficult
to find), and she got upset at that. Can't blame her. She started stomping.
A lot. But then she kept it up, even after she got fed. I gave her food, I gave
her fresh water (same town, so same water, and I filter it anyway, so there was
no distinguishable difference), and I even gave her a few treats. She sat in
the corner in her litterbox and stomped. A lot. Ignored the food unless I fed
it to her directly. If I fed it directly to her, she'd eat what she was
offered, and then resume stomping. Especially with treats. I'd feed her a
treat, and she'd be quiet for just long enough to eat it, and then resume
stomping. Wouldn't come out. Sat in the way back corner of her cage. I finally
reached in and picked her up (yes, I know it's a no no, but I couldn't do
anything else, and it was getting late, I didn't want the neighbors to be kept
up with the stomping) and held her. Surprisingly, she didn't struggle at being
picked up like she usually does. She let me hold and pet her, but when I put
her back in her cage, she resumed stomping again. But she wouldn't come back
out to be held. I finally had to reach back in and pickher up again. I held her
again for another half an hour, and then put her back in. She was curious for
about ten minutes, and then went back to the corner and resumed stomping again.
I finally went and did what she normally considers a cardinal sin: I brushed
her down. She hates that. Well, for once she sat still for it. I brushed a
whole other bunny out of her. Only reason I started brushing her at all was
because she was shedding in giant clumps (she was starting to molt before I
moved, and I guess the move just stressed her out unbelievably, even though it
was only five minutes away). Well, half an hour later I was finished, there was
bunny fur everywhere, and she finally calmed down. Never thought I'd have to
do somethign she hated before she'd calm down. Of course, she started up again
last night. *sigh* Now what do I do? I've fed her treats, I've fed her regular
food, I've given her water, I've given her more attention than I can afford
right now (I've got a big project at work, and I need to unpack everything
including my computer so I'm accessible 24-7), but I can't afford to be doing
this every night! I don't want to piss off the neighbors with her stomping!
Anyone got any other suggestions on calming her down? She's just so upset it's
not funny! Help!

Cyd

Wow, is she stomping THAT loud to be heard by neighbors? I'm pretty sure
my neighbors can't hear my bunnies thump. Anyways, I'm not much help - my
guess is that Trixie is going to stomp until she decides it's okay to be
where she is. Put nice, soft rugs where she stomps and maybe it'll dampen
the sound? :)

Oh, they sure can. :)
My ex-neighbors, no-good heavy metal crowd (another reason to feel glad I am
outta there) used to make the characteristic yelling-screaming-loud music.
One day Ludi decided to stomp around...can you believe they had the nerve to
complain?
Course, I told Ludi to stomp even harder...

Everything might be the same to you, but my rabbit Midge went through this
too when we moved, and he's an old pro at it. He didn't like the smell of
our new home apparently. He hadn't been able to scent mark it and chin
everything. Your rabbit's just tripping out cause nothing smells the way it
did. She'll adjust, besides she's got a wonderful owner to help her through
it!

Hi Cyd,

I know you're having a tough time, but I couldn't help but smile all the
way thru your post. Aren't they the cutest things, even when they're
upset? And isn't it cute how they get us wrapped right around their
paws?

There's only one solution for your situation -- you have to let her
start sleeping in your bed at night. <g> Yep, that's right. Move over
and make room for the rabbit -- Holly does it and her rabbit snuggles
right beside her!

I think her transition to your new place might take a little time -- I
would try to keep everything the same for her as much as possible. Don't
buy her anything new right now, keep the same bunny bowls, blankets,
toys, etc., and give her as much attention as you can spare. She'll get
used to her new area and claim it for her own.

As far as the stomping, it might be a great way to meet your new
neighbors! What a conversation starter!

Hope its better soon...

Stomping or thumping is a warning sign rabbits use when they are scared
or afraid, or mad sometimes. If you turn out all the lights, maybe
leave one on. He may be afraid of the dark.

The only time my Lop Caddie has thumped is when he has been startled. I
had a Netherland Dwarf that thumped because I had moved his favorite
chair he sat under.
