My mini-lop rabbit has a chronic problem with fur mites. My vet gives him
ivermectin shots and it clears up but always comes back a couple months later.
None of my other rabbits has this problem and I've been told it's contagious.
Any ideas on what I need to do to prevent this problem from reoccuring and are
there any home treatments to avoid several vet trips a year? Thanks.
Gerry
Also dusting with Sevin at 5% concentration will kill mites.
This site mentions it for fleas, but it also works for mites
http://www.rabbit.org/chapters/san-diego/health/debug.html I believe mites
don't usually last long in the home on their own, but cleaning any bedding
or carpets could help. I think they can also come in on hay.
Check out www.rabbit.org for other good info.

Still under construction, just ask me for other countries.
don't forget to clean the litter boxes, too... suggested by the vet :)

"Everybunny Loves Somebunny Sometime"
Dean Martin (paraphrased)
Hello Gerry,
If your rabbit has contact with other rabbits, I would get them all
treated together. You may have one that's not showing symptoms and they
keep re-infecting each other. I know when we got a batch of bunnies in
at the rabbit rescue, they all get 2 ivermectin shots (10 days apart) to
make sure they are mite-free.
How many shots does your mini-lop get each time? I had a rabbit that
once had mites so badly that he had to have four shots. It is hard to
understand because he was an inside rabbit. I'm told that mites can hide
in hay and wood (stacks of firewood maybe?) Anyway, Buns got 4 shots 10
days apart each. The vet gave the first one, then she sent us home with
3 more syringes and we marked the calendar and finished the lot. That
took care of them.
Hope you can find the right equation for your mini-lop.
