Hi.

Yes rabbits do love chocolate. Mine is really fond of it, although not all
chocolate is good enough for him. It is not healthy for them though, and if
you want to give it to them, please do it very sparingly. Consider it to be
a very special treat.

I heard somewhere that chocolate is toxic to animals. I'm not sure, so
don't quote me.

Hi everybody!

Today I let Charlotte smell a chocolate. I was only joking, especially as
I had planned to eat it myself - but Charlotte was not joking at all!
After having sniffed it for a little while, she has decided to eat it

right away! And licking her mouth too!! I'm astonished! I've never heard
of bunnies eating chocolate, and BTW I don't think it's good for them to
eat it. Sure Charlotte has very strange tastes, she doesn't even look at
bananas and carrots, and eats all sorts of strange things. Any opinions on
that? :-))

If you are eating chocolate anywhere near Arthur, she will do everything
(and I do mean everything) to steal it from you. Once she even stole an
entire piece of chocolate cake from me when I wasn't looking. She snuck
up and grabbed the paper plate it was on, and ran off. I always let her
have the tiniest taste, but no more then that. She loves it, but it
can't be good for her.

I have met a few chocolate loving bunnies--maybeit's the sweet smell that
attracts them , and then, once they taste it, well I guess they act just like
we do.
I don't give my guys chocolate although I Cocoa and Scooter would love it.
I would give it only as the rarest of treats, and in teeny tiny amounts, if at
all.
I know rabbits like dog and cat food because it is high in fat--maybe that is
what attracts them to chocolate also.

When I was a kid, my younger sister used to give her bunny chocolate regularly.
She hoped it would help him lay Cadbury eggs like the bunny on tv!!!! (My mom
made her stop once she found out about it)

I once had a friend who lost her small dog on easter morning...he ate a
chocolate easter bunny (the 12 inch height type) that was in her easter
basket - chocolate is very dangerous for pets!! I

I agree. I had a St. Bernard (a huge dog) who loved chocolate, she only
ate it when she dug it out of somewhere where she shoudlnt have been (ie.
my parents closet a few days prior to easter). Our veternarian said it was
very bad for her heart, and to never feed it to her

So, I could only imagine that chocolate would be very dangerous to feed to
bunnies, since they are very small, have fragile organs, and have tiny
hearts.

I am no expert, but I will never let Happy or Marina even touch anything
like chooclate or candy.

Choc is toxic for dogs. I don't know about other animals. Thumper loves
it. I was worried at first but she was fine after she ate most of that
Keebler cookie she stole. Who can blame them anything that tastes that good
has to be bad for you!!

I would be very interested next time someone visits thier vet, for them to ask
if chocolate is ok... does anyone have any upcoming appointments?

My dog loved it too (she'd go crazy for it), of course she would never
understand that it was dangerous for her.

Chocolate is bad for rabbits. When Arthur was a baby he got into a candy bar, I
don't know how much he ate, but the wrapper was torn and I saw nibble marks. It
was not a whole lot, but because I remembered hearing a story about a friend of
a friend's dog dying after eating chocolate, I called the vet right away. They
said it was very bad, and to keep a close watch on Arthur and to bring him in
right away if he started acting ill. They called it toxicosis, or something
like that. Sorry, I probably have the wrong term there, but you know what I
mean. Arthur was fine, but the vet said it can kill animals.

Thanks so much for the info. I thought it was bad also, but I wanted to clarify
it. I am very glad Arthur made it through his chocolate ordeal :-)

It is, to dogs. It can kill them. I think it is to cats, to, but I can't
swear on it.

Chocolate is NOT good for animals. It contains too much sugar and
caffeine.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats and birds. I imagine most animals just
can't handle it.

Chocolate is not good for animals in general. It contains a high level
of sugar and caffeine. It's really much too strong for them to handle.
My Skibby was a brownie eating bunny. Just the smell of them would send
him into a "niff-niff frenzie". But when I allowed him to have some it
would be a piece about the size of a dime because I knew it wasn't good
for him.

I have read that chocolate is poisonous to cats but that was in a cat book.
Now, naturally, cats eat rabbits and rabbits eat plants. Very different
diets, so who knows if it's poisonous to one if it's poisonous to the other
exept those who, for whatever reason, have researched it. (probably
researchers who have rabbits that like chocolate) :-) Whatever the answer,
keep looking to find it if you're planning to continue feeding it to the
rabbit. Although "Better safe than sorry" is always a GOOD "rule of thumb".
Keep loving Charlotte and keep her healthy.

The chocolate contains very high sugar(carbohydrate) which causes
fermentation in the cecum of the rabbit which in turn produces gas which
leads to intestinal stasis and great discomfort for the rabbit. The
fermentation also leads to growth of 'unfriendly bacteria' in the cecum
destroying the 'friendly bacteria' that the rabbit needs in the
cecum(special pouch found near the colon and small intestine) to digest
cellulose to produce a special poop called cecal matter ( high in protein
and volatile fatty acids) which the rabbit has to eat (coprophagy) to
provide about 30% of its energy needs. By destroying this balance of
bacteria and causing intestinal enteritis, the unfriendly bacteria produces
toxins that will kill the rabbit. Even if the toxins do not kill the
rabbit, it will slowly die of starvation due to inability to properly
digest its food and inability to poop(intestinal stasis)

hope this helps prevent unnecessary suffering and death of our favorite
rodents due to ignorant owners thinking they are giving their pets a
wonderful treat.
