Our rabbit (Slabbert - a lop-ear, about 6 lbs) is moulting the whole
year. I read in the rabbit-books however that rabbits should moult in
spring en in fall, but not all seasons.
Any further information: de cage stands in the corridor but when we're
at home, Slabbert is always with us in the living room.
He gets pellets and fresh vegetables every day.
Does anyone know what the cause may be of the whole-year-moulting and
what we can do about it?
Lots of thanks in advance to everyone who send us usefull information
about this problem.

Greetings,

Raymond Westerik

It's hard finding reliable information on rabbits. I remember
reading/hearing that rabbits shed four times each year; two sheddings are
heavy and two are light. I believe THE HOUSE RABBIT HANDBOOK mentions that
all rabbits shed constantly to some degree and there are two major shedding
periods. Your rabbit may be experiencing normal shedding.

"Excessive" shedding could also be caused by irritation from fleas or mites.
If your rabbit has "dandruff" or small bald patches, a trip to the vet and
cat flea powder are probably in order.

In the long run, gradually introducing your rabbit to a routine of frequent
brushing could benefit both of you. Start off with petting and add a few
gentle strokes with the brush. Add more brushing as your rabbit becomes
comfortable with it. Be sure to choose a soft brush. Sargents makes a very
soft nylon bristle brush that seems to come away with more loose fur than the
plastic tipped metal slicker brushes. Regular brushing reduces the amount of
fur your rabbit could ingest while grooming and cuts down on the fur coating
the inside of your home.

Raymond,
I had a similar problem with Tasha, when she was 2 years old she shed
(mostly heavily) for a full year. After that she went back to
"normal" shedding. The vet said as long as she wasn't getting bald
spots and the skin looked healthy and she was ok otherwise not to
worry. Just be sure to give extra brushing so he doesn't get too much
in his belly. Good luck.

Yes, it's about 4 times a year -- it's just that ours lasts for about
12 weeks at a time. :(

Actually, we can tell when it's time to shed again -- S.D. gets a nice
little "saddle" across his nose and back, followed by about a hundred
pounds of hair. And we all know how light and fluffy shedding rabbit
hair is...
