Hi everyone,

has any of you ever had a bunny who broke his hind leg? One of my rabbits
did three weeks ago, we took his cast off on Monday, but he still limps and
doesn't use his leg anymore. The vet said it would never be like before but
said it would probably improve within a couple weeks. I'm starting to worry,
please, if someone has had this problem before, let me know how it all ended
up.

My Ralphable broke a hind leg, but the break was at the ball of the hip joint
(only a small piece broke off). The repair was that the vet's removed the
small piece and rounded his bone to make a false joint. He uses it well, but
cannot run quickly enough to escape a predator, so he cannot be returned to the
wild (not that he wants to - he likes TV too much!). [Ralphable is a
cottontail - specifically a Western Brush Rabbit.]

Where is your rabbit's break? If it's in the middle of the bone, that may have
vastly different results than what my Ralphable experiences.

There was a bunny, Frosty, from Illinois who also broke his leg and was
in a cast for 3 months. It took him quite a while before he put weight
on it when the cast came off but managed rather well on just 3 legs.
The muscles were atrophied and would need regular exercise to regain
strength. The last time I heard he was doing well and using the leg.
Not sure about the time span.

Steven,

our rabbit Flopsy broke his leg when he was only ten or eleven weeks old,
one week after we got him! He jumped from pretty high and broke his leg. We
took him immediately to the vet for we saw that he had a serious problem
walking. The vet took care of him, made some X-rays and told us that since
the bone was not scattered, with absolute rest (three to four weeks inside
his litterbox, absolutely no running around) his bone should be joining
again. Especially since he was so young, he was still growing of course.

We did not know, and neither did the vet, if he was able to walk normally
again. To everybody's surprise, when he 'did his time inside his cage' he
ran like never before. We took him to the vet after a while to be sure his
bone and hip joint had no problems anymore.

I suppose that any fracture depends on the situation and severity. Since
Flops has been wilder than ever before, I have good faith in your bun's
improvement over the next few weeks!

Sofia, Erik and Flops.

Thanks all of you for the info, I hope he'll be able to run soon, it's not a
life for a rabbit to stay in a corner.
Thanks again,

Steven
