Hiya everyone not been on here for a while as never seem to have the
time anymore. However Smirnoff has a bit of a problem and was
wondering if anyone could give me some advice. For anyone that
doesn't remember me, Smirnoff is an 8 year old Lop, house rabbit.

Smirn has been treated a lot for ear mites, the little blighters keep
coming back, he is not too bothered by it, shakes his head a bit, and
after injections and drops he is always fine. However I noticed a
lump in his ear that seemed to grow daily and eventually started to
look like a crusty twiggy type thing, I took him to the vet and he
touched it and a bit came off, he then used a stick with black on the
end (i think it was charcoal) which apprently stops any blood when
you use it to pick something off. He used the stick and managed to
pretty much get rid of the whole lump, and Smirn was left with a
little black mark in his ear. This has now gradually grown back into
a big smooth lump, a bit of crust around it, with a black dot in the
middle of it. I tried to use a cotton bud (think you call them Qtips
in the US) to clear it up a bit and the black dot in the middle had a
small bit of blood and pus which I wiped off with the cotton bud. I
have got an appt with the vet tonight, however its not my usual vet as
he is on holiday, I am very worried that they will want to put him
under anaesthetic to remove this. but I see no other option if it
continues to get bigger, it doesn't seem to cause Smirn any problems
(unless his mum starts to try to clean it) Could this be a wart ? I
find it weird that it started off as a twiggy, crusty thing and now
its completely different like a smooth lump ? Other than this he is
very healthy (apart from producing a lot of cecals which are very
annoying to try to get off his bum, although the vet trims his fur to
keep it clean) He is eating and drinking well and acts more like a 2
yr old than an 8 year old !

Anyway any advice or thought you could share with me I would much
appreciate it.

Love to all and your buns

Lu

Hi

I'm no expert but I also wondered if this is due to another parasitic
infection apart from the mites and would suggest that the vet also sends a
sample off for microscopic examination.

Mr. Pepper just got over something similar. He had a fast growing lump,
like a large pimple, developed on his bottom lip and another on his nose.
His doctor did a biopsy and determined it was a bacterial infection. He was
given a weekly shot of penicillin for a month and they cleared up. His
doctor said surgery would have been a last resort if nothing else worked.

Hi Lu,
So, what happened with Smirnoff? It sounded like an infection to me,
especially when you mentioned pus. I would say he would have to be on
antibiotics. Let us know what happened!!
