I have heard that rabbits only eat carrots, is this true? I have also
been told by some people that rabbits also eat anything sweet, like
cookies or pies and cakes. Is this true also? Do rabbits really eat
carrots or is that the story of Bugs Bunny, or is Bugs the only rabbit
that eats carrots?

My flatmate carefully and took great pains in planting carrots in the
garden, and up they came little sweet carrots. On giving them to the 2
buns they gave them a sniff ate the green top which they seemed to enjoy
and left the orange bit of the carrot. This year will be a repeat of the
same exercise except that we will eat the orange bit and the buns the
green tops.

They do like lettuce, (only give them a little) dried food, apples my
t-shirt (anyones actually) grass, wood, plastic, mains cable, they love
crythamthanins leaves (sorry about spelling its a flower) runner bean
leaves.
I tend to think they will try to eat anything and everything except what
you'd most expect or like them to eat.

Yes, rabbits eat carrots, but that should be a small part of the diet.
Rabbits need vegetable diversity in their diets as well as massive amounts of
hay. Some pelleted food is okay too.

Yes, rabbits will eat sweets too, but these are very bad for rabbits and can
lead to serious intestinal disorders.

For many years, I thought the whole rabbit/carrot thing was a myth, just
like mice and cheese. My first three rabbits had no interest in carrots
and a lot of interest in cabbage and cookies. Since they all three went
for the same things, I assumed that I was seeing true rabbit inclinations.

My current bunny is of a different breed than my first three, and with her
larger size and floppy ears have come an amazingly different array of
behaviors. Starting with a passion for carrots. I didn't actually offer
her any, I was eating some baby carrots and dropped one on the floor.
Adrienne practically inhaled it. So now she gets them regularly.

I will agree with the person who says rabbits will eat anything sweet,
however. Adrienne (and her predecessors) definitely has a sweet tooth -
her latest craze being strawberry jam. Again, I dripped a bit on the floor
while making a PB&J sandwich, and now she will NOT leave me alone whenever
the jam comes out of the fridge. My rabbits have eaten (whether they were
supposed to or not) and liked:

- Peppermint iced tea
- Cookies, especially animal crackers.
- Granola Bites.
- Broccoli (sp?) leaves (much less interest in the broccoli)
- Bok Choy
- Cauliflower
- Romaine lettuce (will eat green leaf lettuce (NOT iceberg!), if that's
all that's available, but Adrienne lets me know that she views this as a
concession on her part.)
- Grapes
- Apples
- Chocolate ice cream
- Peanuts
- A wide assortment of wild plant life, including evergreen needles (both
my does view/ed the outside world as a huge smorgasboard)

And probably about a dozen other things that I have forgotten.
Unfortunately, a lot of those aren't good for the rabbit, or perhaps I
would have been able to bribe my way back into Adrienne's good graces
(she's currently very angry that I went on a trip).

So in my opinion, rabbits will eat just about anything, period, if you let
them.

It has been my experiance that rabbits have the very worst sort of sweet
tooth. I've yet to meet a rabbit that didn't simply love some sort of
sugary snacks, chocolate, ice cream, cookies, etc. Of course all these
goodies are VERY bad for rabbits, but then again they aren't too good for
us either. I've found that rabbits do have their own tastes and some like
carrots while others really could care less about them. It's always fun
to watch my rabbit tasting something for the first time. He'll come over
and give it a sniff and then poke out his tongue to give the item a little
lick. Sometimes he'll shake his head and run off, sometimes he'll pounce
on my hand and eat the offered food as if he's starving. The cutest is
when he runs off only to come back and give it another couple licks before
giving his final verdict.

Besides carrots, some good vegetables that are not too watery for
rabbits are:

Sweet potatoes
Parsnips
String beans
White potatoes
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Collards
Kale

Our bunny enjoys all of these. He also likes bananas. I like to
buy the miniature ones when they are on special because they are
just his size. His favorite dry food is Monkey Chow.
