My tiel, Sweetie, keeps sneezing. Does this mean that she has a cold?
Do I need to take her to the vet? She doesn't really seem to be acting
funny as of right now. Anyone else gone through this? Thanks in
advance!

Did the bird just start sneezing, or has it always sneezed?
My 2 teils sneeze sometimes, and after 100's of dollars
spent on lab tests, we have determined that nothing is wrong
with them. They just sneeze because of the dust from their
feathers, usually when preening. They always have sneezed
occasionally. If I noticed a change--a bird that didn't
sneeze begins to, I would be worried, and rush it to the
vet.

Watch him carefully! Birds are at the bottom of the food chain and they
don't let it show if they are not feeling well. When you notice that your
bird is very quiet, doesn't eat as well or just behaves slightly different I
would take him to the vet.
We learned the hard way to recognize the early signs and not wait too long.
If he sprays when he is sneezing watch him very carefully for a couple of
days. If it doesn't get better, I would take him in. The $ 60 for a blood
test is not worth the agony if you wait too long.
If you have a good scale weigh him every day. Weight loss is a sure sign
that something is wrong.
Our vet offers free weight check whenever we want. It's the best way to keep
track of your birds health. We weigh our birds regularly as a routine and
daily if we suspect a problem.
Good luck

Hi,

Our tiel sneezes sometimes and it is fun when he is on your shoulder and you
turn to look at him and snoooootz, a sneeze spray in your face. It usually
happens just after preening.

He's not clogged up or anything, it's just like one of those sneezes from
too much dust or sneezing on a sunny day (does everyone do that, sneeze from
the bright sun? I don't do it all of the time but it does happen)

winter always makes my bird sneeze i use a humidifier with a little
eucolyptus oil.I run it during the night it seems to help, also i open up
the windows for about fifteen minutes in each room, winter is the wrong
time of year for birds.
Oh one more thing daily showers also help keep down the dander that
makes our birds sneeze, mae sure they are kept warm after a shower.

Hi,

How well ventalated is the room where your tiel lives? They are dusty
creatures and need air movement. If I see my sneezing, yawing, i open a
window, i live in Florida, or turn a fan on to get the old stale air
moving around.

Hi, it's my first time on alt.cockateils.
My teil, Pickles, has been sneezing every so often just forever, and is
healthy and full of beans, so it doesn't necessarily mean your bird is ill.
A friend of mine asked me if that was a sound Pickles had learned!

I've read where cockatiels sneeze to clear their nasal passages and that it
wasn't a cause for worry unless the nose was runny.
