The temperature needs to be at least 72 degrees (Farenheit).

Anne,

Budgies are quite hardy actually. As long as they can get out of the
weather, can have water (that doesn't freeze), and the temperature
doesn't get too cold they actually adjust pretty well. I wouldn't take a
bird from a 70 degree room to a 40 degree shed without the bird having
time to acclimate. But, I know many breeders here in the States who
don't have heated bird rooms and their birds do quite well. We had one
breeder who used to have an outside, unheated bird room with no
electricity. He used to have to walk through the snow to the bird room,
knock the ice out of the water dishes and give them fresh water, and use
a flashlight to see because it was winter and dark early. Yet he never
lost a bird that winter, and still says his birds seemed to be in better
condition than ever before or since.

anne, I keep a large flight of budgies in my bird barn, I heat only if the
temp drops below 40 degrees F. Watching them I think the heat is more for
my comfort than for theirs.

Jill, I don't even keep my house at 72 degrees. Most Budgies do very well
in milder temps.

That's a relief...... I thought I would have to change my plans to buy a
budgie..... our house is only that warm when the outside temps are.

Wendy, I have had budgies for several years and they are still alive and
well. The primary issue is acclimation, these budgies are allowed to "get
used to" the weather as it changes gradually and naturally.

By the way my budgie flight and the oversized wood stove I use to heat with
are somewhere in that photo album listed below.

Not true. Budgies do very well at temperatures much lower than that. My
aviary is rarely kept at a temperature of more than 55F and that is
mainly so I don't feel too cold when I'm in there with the birds. They
don't mind a bit. They are hardy and healthy with no ill affects of any
type due to the temperature.

Again, they need a source of water, of food, and shelter from winds,
etc. Other than that as long as they have time to acclimate to changes
they will do great.

And to the person worried about having to move their birds daily because
one room is colder, don't worry about it. They'll do fine. With that
said, if you're talking about pet birds, then you probably should be
keeping them in the room that the family is in most of the time. In fact
moving them around is probably worse for them then the temperature.
Budgies like security and a routine, and moving back and forth disrupts
that feeling of security.

I can't recall where I read it, but I read it someplace. In the winter, if
it's not at least 70 degrees in here I'm freezing my buns off. Probably I'm
projecting that on the birds, too :-)
