I get a couple white feeder mice from a pet supply shop, every other
week or so for my two pet boas. Sometimes I feel sorry for the mouse and
end up trying to house it in a plastic critter keeper as a pet..I
haven't been able to keep these mice alive for more than a week, no
matter how well I care for them. They seem to act ok but then about a
day before they die, I notice them jumping repeatedly to the top of the
cage (?).. then they look not so well the next day and just lie down and
pass on shortly after that. Is there something genetically wrong with
white "feeder" mice, or am I doing this wrong? I keep water in there for
them and make sure not to over feed. Thanks,

Y.D.

most "feeder" mice aren't necessarily genetically bad, though that varies
with the breeders involved. and it might be that the pet store you're using
has a negligent breeder and there might be something wrong with them
genetically.
or it could be any number of other reasons. what type of bedding are you
using? what are you feeding them? how close are you housing them to the
snakes? if they are kept in close proximity to the snakes, they will smell
them and it is possible that the stress from that could kill them.
you say that they don't look well the day before or so.. how "not well" are
they hunched, do they not move alot, does their fur look funny??

mice are fairly easy to keep, so i'm not really sure what is going on here

They are on a different floor than the snakes. It's the jumping they all
would do, a day or so before they died- maybe they are feeling ill and
want to get away? they look odd, like a little hunched and the fur is a
bit lumpy looking, not smooth looking.. they just look like when you
notice a sick animal in a pet shop sometimes- eyes half closed, fur not
groomed, usually huddled and not moving or having difficulty with
movement. I was thinking they injure themselves with this almost frantic
jumping, then it causes their death? but I think they must feel ill to
start the repeated jumps to begin with- it seems they are wanting
desperately to get out of the cage. I'd like to find a hobby breeder to
get a mouse from, no more of those feeder ones, too sad when you get
attached to it. Where might I look for someone? Thanks,

Y.D.

hrm.. evrything but the jumping sounds like typical mouse illness stuff..
it's the jumping that is throwing me...
anyway, a good place online to look for breeders would be the rodent clubs..
rmca.org and petrodetns.com are 2 good ones. just pop into the mouse forums
and ask abotu breeders in your area (make sure to tell where you are...)

Our local pet shops only have the one kind of mice and people by them
out of the same tank for pets and herpe chow. I have found raising
mice to be dead easy. You buy the mouse and rat food at Petco and make
sure they have food and water at all times. Get them some buildings to
hang out in. They love toilet paper tubes to chew and crawl through.
