Hi,

I posted a wee while back regarding our new male hamster, Binky, who was
really shy. Anyway, I've recently noticed an odour of peanut butter on
him - we've not given him peanut butter for a while. I was wondering to
myself whether Binky should, in fact, be called Binkina?

Having looked at the breeding thread of the newgroup, I see that someone
had mentioned the female hamster smelling of peanuts when in heat. Do
males ever smell of peanuts?? It makes no difference whether Binky is
male or female as we only have one hamster and I'm not planning on
breeding or anything - I'm just curious.

I know the obvious thing to do would be to 'check him out' - but it's
impossible to hold him upside down for longer than 1 second!

Cheers, Margaret

If it is a syrian and past 4 months it would be very hard *not* to
notice his masculinity signs (cushions) ;-)
Maybe someone can post a link to his or her Mister Syrian so you can
see for yourself. ;-)

You don't even have to have them stand still too long or even look
underneath with Syrian hamsters. Their back end looks a different shape.
Females are a sort of rounded hatchback shape while males have a distinct
boot (trunk I believe for our American posters) shape to use a car analogy.
Descriptive writing never was my strong point! As Citizen says elsewhere in
this thread if you can look underneath, Binky's testicles should be visible.
I've only got one photo of Zippy from the rear and it isn't totally helpful
as her long fur disguises the shape but I shall scan it and post if you
don't get a good one elsewhere.

He is a Syrian hamster and we got him as a baby in February so I think
he's at least 4 months old. Hmmmm, it would be interesting to see a
picture of what I should see if I do manage to hold him upside down!

Thanks, Margaret

Ok, from my experience, if you turn the hamster on his back and it has lots
of "titties" then its a female as males either do not have such noticeable
"titties" or do not have them at all. I have never really looked on my males
to examine that far. Male hamsters have noticeable ball sacks that are
possible to be sucked up inside them but for the most part hang down. There
is also a shorter distance between the anus and pee area on females than
males. I will post pictures of a male and female soon on the Hippy Hamster
site http://www.visualsun.ws/hamsters

If it doesn't worlk I'll type the correct address in the next post!

believe known as "butt brows". A while after this picture was taken she got
them tangled and needed a trim. The rear fur now goes all the way round.

And another clue. If you are using scent as a clue to gender does the smell
occur every 4 or 5 days or is it constant. I wouldn't like to say whether or
not the scent of a female hamster is like peanuts or peanut butter. My sense
of smell is unreliable. All I can say is that there is a hamster smell. I
don't think it is objectionable or anything but just a noticeable scent when
near the cage. Will Binky still be Binky if the sex is confirmed as female,
it sounds such a gender free name. Perhaps if Binky has male connections for
you how about Binkie!

Thanks for the advice. Guess what I'll be spending my evening doing?
Poor Binky will be wondering why I'm staring so intently at his private

I don't think you could ever describe our Zippy as irritable but I think she
is more active and much more keen to come out and run or run in her wheel on
the days she is detectable by scent. Zippy and her cage do not normally
smell so I suppose that is why it get noticed.

I bought an extremely pregnant hamster from a "female only "hamster cage.
When we got home and I was showing her off suddenly I saw huge testicals.I
laughed "You're not pregnant you're just a Fat Bastard!!".Thats how he was
named.

I keep my adult hammies together. The other day I looked in on them as they
slept. I noticed something that looked like a one month old hamster under
Snuggles. I thaught my 3 year old had put it in the cage. Upon closer
inspection I noticed it was just his testicals.

OK, it's time to show off Fuku-chan's mighty manhood again.

As the weather gets warmer, these 'cushions' will look bigger. This picture
above was taken in a hot summer season, when he was asleep (so the cusions were
relaxed too :-0 ). He was probably 7-8 months old at that time. I am looking
forward to seeing him sleeping like that again this summer.
I hope everybody enjoys the pic. :-D

Holly and Bundle seem to have synchronised their cycle and smell strongly on
the same days. Also I've notice the day after that they are more likely
to have a "I'm not getting out of bed for anything - not even a grape day".

Most of the time they will run for hours in their balls ( with loo and food
stops of course - they ram my ankles for attention when necessary, I'm
trained!!). So I wonder if they feel a bit under the weather or more tired
at that point in their cycle?

:o)

hello,

Thanks for all your help. I had a look at Binky last night - the smell
was away so he was only really 'smelly' for about 2/3 days. He has been
more lazy than normal though - sleeping quite a bit whereas he was more
active last week so perhaps we just do have a wee girl hamster as I
couldn't see any noticeable testicles and from, what I gather, I
wouldn't have been able to miss them! I think we'll keep the name Binky
but suddenly I'm seeing him (her) in a different light. I'm sure his
eyelashes have grown longer !

Cheers, margaret

Not half as odd as what I did this morning. I had a good sniff at the peanut
butter to see if it smelt like the female hamster smell. I can't say it did
seem similar but as I have said my sense of smell is a bit suspect.

Well, I'd just like to say thanks again. Binky is officially a Binkie!
Although I think we'll just keep the 'y' on the end - don't want to
upset her! Christine kindly sent me pictures of male and female
hamsters and I can say without reservation that Binky has no male parts!

Thanks again,
Margaret

Huffing the peanut butter now, huh? ;)

I didn't think it smelled like peanut butter so much as really a
musky-hamstery odor...my husband says he doesn't notice it at all. And it
only gets to me sometimes. As long as the cages are clean its not really
that intense. Once when I was sick and hadn't cleaned the cages for slightly
over a week the smell got to me. I didn't even know they got a bit 'ripe'
until then. :) First time I knew hamsters could 'stink'.

When I was young (ie many, many years ago)my mother was so convinced that
hamsters didn't smell unless neglected that I'm now sure my brother and I
were unfairly criticised and the hamster "odour" was my brother's female
hamster! We had only had a male before. I can assure you that our hamsters
were not neglected in any way but my mother liked to make sure!

It may not be your sense of smell alone. When Andrew and I were concerned
about Jinx's odor (at the time we didn't realize she was just in heat) we both
came up with descriptive similies for the smell and neither was anything close
to peanut butter. It's possible that different hamsters smell slightly
different when they go into heat. Since I've only had one female hamster, I
can't say for certain.

Pet store employees sound more like a boyfriend that a friend of mine had.
After knowing him for a while & dated a few times with nothing more than a
kiss a time or two, she had eventually lost interest in the guy (too
immature) & they talked less & less often as time went by. He later
approached her asking if she didn't like him because he'd gotten her
pregnant....and this guy was in his 20s. She had a bit of explaining to try
to do.
