I don't know if this got lost, or if people didn't have any advice to give
so I'm reposting it incase someone has something to offer me.

Hi all,
Well, Fudge is now well over two years old, and as he gets older, he seems
to be losing fur. This isn't a problem, but when I was cleaning him out
today, I noticed that his skin seems to be a little dry. Is there anything I
can do for him that won't harm him or matt up his fur(I had to cut a lump of
matted fur that I hadn't noticed off today) as he's a long haired hammy? He
gets vitamins in his water, and today he also got a 'small animal
conditioning tablet' crushed up in with his food, as a way to help him. He's
still very active and loves to run in his ball, so I obviously want to help
him as much as possible. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, another thing, when I took his wheel out to clean it, there was a lot of
fur stuck round the spindle bit in the middle bit of the wheel(axel?), which
again I hadn't noticed. To be honest, Fudge doesn't use his wheel much, but
he must have used it at some point to get this fur stuck. How can I stop
this happening again, or should I just take his wheel out and let him out in
his ball more often?

TIA!

Emma.

A little olive oil rubbed into the skin can help, and won't harm him in
grooming.

I'd give him a larger wheel to prevent it. If he enjoys the wheel at all,
I'd hate to deprive him of it -- although extra ball time is always a treat
too!

Thanks for reposting Emma, my server doesn't always show every post. Do you
give Fudge Nutritional Yeast? A sprinkle on his food will help hair
regrowth, and as Jane said, a little oil will help his skin. It will make
his hair a little greasy, but if you brush him regularly, it shouldn't matt.

My Splodge was a long haired red-eyed cream Syrian and even though his wheel
was big enough for him, he used to leave a little hair around the spindle.
His back was straight when he ran in the wheel as he wasn't a very big
hammy, but I still had the problem with the hair catching. Perhaps a Wodent
Wheel would help. In this country (UK) you can get them from:

www.petplanet.co.uk

which is based in Scotland. That's where mine came from and I had no
problem with delivery and they even included a free box of treats!!

Hope this has helped.
