Alright I also have to add that my little baby hamster hasn't gone to the
bathroom today and he usually goes several times on other days.....not to
sound daft but could this be hamster constipation? he's 13 days old and on
kitten formula as well as asparagus, carrots, broccoli, cheese, a bit of
chicken, some bread soaked in milk, some water, and hamster mix with seeds
and stuff in it.....I'm a bit worried...maybe i should put more fruit in his
diet or something or maybe i should just feed him a good dose of prunes?

It could be constipation, that's certainly not unheard of. Instead
of prunes, though, see if he'll lick a little olive oil from your finger.
He can have pretty much all he wants, as olive oil can be beneficial for a
number of reasons. I've had hams with constipation due to oral medications,
and olive oil helped very rapidly.

Good luck, DGI

Any oil will do, really, but olive oil is particularly good. It's
polyunsaturated, low in cholesterol and high in nutrition. Since mine have
always seemed to like the taste, that's a plus. As long as you get some
oil into their tract it should help with constipation. Castor oil was an
old-time remedy that accomplished this purpose and many others. But
these days that's hard to find, and it tastes terrible. Olive oil is quite
good for a number of problems, including dry, chapped skin on the paws,
tail, ears, etc.

We were all out of olive oil so we soaked some meat in a corn oil and it
worked fine and he's back to normal ^.^

When Gunney was a baby he ate ALL the sunflower seeds out of his bowl one
night and was almost doubled over he was so stuffed. I gave him a bit of
olive oil and he was Ok soon after. Olive oil seems to work for most
creatures. We'll just leave it at that :-)

Try hydrating him. Either give him lots of water, or feed him some
pedialyte... (they sell that stuff in drug stores for babies to prevent
dehydration).

By the way, why are you feeding a 13 day old baby by yourself? Is the mother
not available? Baby hamsters are best taken care of by their mothers, even
if it seems like the mother is neglecting them.

The mother stopped feeding them and 5 out of six died so i had no choice but

my bottle feeding him* and still doing fine

Oh, I understand... Yes, that's rather sad that the other 5 didn't make it.
But I guess since you were able to keep one of them alive, the one you have
is pretty darn special, ain't he? :)

By the way, did giving him more fluids help the constipation?

I was giving him regular bottle feedings of milk back then and I put a bit
of vegetable oil on some chicken for him and he's been fine ever since. I
think he just ate a bit too much cheese that day!
