IF salty products are bad for our hamsters, how come they sell those salt
wheels for hamsters??
When Hamtaro & I were new to each other.
I admit I did buy/try/return the product.
He wanted nothing to do with it.

You know... I have no idea. Salt in excess is bad for anything, but
everything needs a mineral balance. I've kept hamsters, guinea pigs, you
name it, since I was 6 years old, and none of them ever touched a salt lick
when I gave them it. Strange.

Mine love thier salt lick... :) I leave it in the cage, but they don't
bother with it often enough that I feel the need to remove it.

A lot of shops sell things that aren't suitable for hamsters such as fluffy
bedding and runged wheels. But the pet shops don't care as long as they make
some money.

That's What I was asking !!
My gut answer is tooo many domesticated animal get human-type of diseases.
I think that is because they are given our food, maybe don't get enough
excercise, fresh air, all that "baked" food isn't what they'd eat in their own
habitat. There's food coloring and flavoring and chemicals they wouldn't get
normally and there's pesticide, herbacide, and chemical, pollutants theat we
expose our pets to, and the water they drink, etc... So back to the concept of
Salt Licks, hmmmm I just talked myself out of it, after all, why would they
need extra salt, where would they find it in their own habitat, when or under
what circumstances would it be necessary out in the wild, and now take it back
to here in our cages are the same (if any) needs for salt in the wild, repeated
here in our constant climate of our homes? So why would they need salt and
could WHAT WE FEED OUR HAMSTERS PROLONG THEIR LIVES, .... as in less commercial
fast food diets. (the "mixes" we buy, is what I am referring to). In humans
too much salt, I believe, leads to heart problems, and circulation problems,
correct me if I'm wrong.
So maybe we should feed our hammies less salt. Less baked food (mixes).
And more grains, veggies, etc.
QUESTION: When feeding veggies what do you think is better, raw, or steamed?
Welp that's some food for thought,
Please respond :-)
good nite.

No they don't need it, they get all the salt they need from their food.

Personally I think it's a crazy idea, I don't know why someone would think
of it. We wouldn't want to lick salt would we?

Cheap product to make and sell. I got Fudge one and she buried it. So that
was the end of that.

We feed salt block to the cows at work in the wintertime. They say it
burns their bellys and make them eat more hay. They also mix it with the
mineral sacks so they don't eat as much of it. I wouldn't give it to a
rodent though. They get all the salt they need from their food. I give
mine unsalted dry roasted peanuts too. I figure if it's bad for us it,
can't be good for them. As far as why they sell them... Same reason they
sell pine bedding for hams i guess. If it only is harmful to one out of
ten hams they probably consider that acceptable.

Exactly. I am sure my Hammie gets all the sodium he needs from his
seeds, fresh things I give him as well as the little treats of cheddar
cheese I offer him once a week.

Salt licks are sometimes sold at stores if a hamster had a inbalance of minerals. However, most salt licks are instead, for gerbils. Gerbils can use them and they help with digestion.
