Our Russian Dwarf Hamster passed on, as hamsters do, and we're thinking of
getting something a bit more personable. (Our little guy was very tame
provided a steady stream of sunflower seeds was on hand). We live in a
small apartment so our pet must live in an aquarium about 24x16x16 inches
(although he or she can come out to play in the evenings). Of course to the
dwarf hamster this thing was like a mansion but it seems that space would
not be fair to a full grown guinea pig. We simply can't fit a larger cage or
hutch. I've also read that aquariums are unsuitable because of poor air
circulation. It's very important to us that we provide a proper home.
So the questions are:
1. are there "dwarf" varieties of guinea pigs which might be well suited to
living in our aquarium?
2. Is there another pet out there which: lives happily in medium sized
aquarium, likes to be picked up, doesn't look much like a rat (we have a
slight phobia problem here), and doesn't require a bank loan to purchase?
Thanks heaps in advance for any advice.
Matt
There is no such thing as a dwarf guinea pig but abbasyinians seem to be
smaller than othern breeds

Mice, Dagus, Gerbils...stuff like that
Gerbils will suit your aquarium fine, but you will probably have to buy more
than one because like piggies they are very sociable. They aren't like rats,
but are a bit more 'nimble' than hamsters but can be just as friendly. They
like burrowing so you can fill the aquarium with a peat substitute + hay
mixture for them to go under.
Or, you could just buy fish!
Hope that helps,
Jo :)
