Greetings.

Does anyone know of any company, besides Exotic Direct, which provides pet
medical insurance for ferrets in the UK? I recently applied for an
insurance policy with Exotic Direct but was turned down, so I am looking
for alternatives.

Regards,
Tristan

try tescos or direct line , to be honest though its not really worth
it , just put a 10.00 a month away , many of the problems ferrets
have in later life will be excluded

Unfortunately, those two companies insure only cats and dogs.

It depends on the individual circumstances, I'm sure. In my case I'd
probably be saving money.

It gets even worse. My old Fred seems to be on a downward trend lately. As
I've mentioned though, I'll put up with the mess and extra work as long as
he seems fine and not in pain.

My impending nightmare though, is if he does end up being in pain someday
soon where I might want to have him put to sleep as a mercy killing. My job
is in jeopardy now and I can't even afford to go to my own doctor, let alone
a vet. So what do I do with Fred if it comes to that???? (and btw, I'd
actually be willing to spend money on Fred before myself...that's how much I
love him.)

I'm even thinking of ways I can end his life painlessly by myself. God, I
hope it doesn't come to that.

I went through this two years ago with Farrah and she died in my arms late
one night. I still live with that horrible memory. I don't want Fred to go
that long but what the hell do I do in this situation???

Any suggestions (if it comes to that) are very welcome.

Needless to say, my Christmas greeting this year is, "Bah Humbug!"

If you're in the UK and on certain benefits for people with low or no
income (specifically, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit), then you
qualify for free veterinary treatment through the People's Dispensary for
Sick Animals. If you can't afford health care or euthanasia for Fred then
they will almost certainly provide it to you free of charge. See
<http://www.pdsa.org.uk/> for more info.

You could always contact the local vets and ask them for advice

Thank you both for your suggestions. I never thought of that as an option
but if it comes to that, I'm sure I could have it done by the city animal
control or the SPCA or even find a sympathetic vet that would do it now and
let me pay later.

My work situation is only temporary....things are even looking better
today. I just think about the "what if it happens while I'm broke?"

Regardless, the whole subject is horrible to think about. Even with
euthanasia at the vet's office, Fred would be scared going somewhere other
than his home here, then he would be stuck with a needle that would hurt.
That's a lot of trauma for him just there.

Two years ago, little Farrah (age 4.5) went downhill. The trips to the vet
didn't help her much but they really scared her. She was SO happy to be back
at home. It took her 3 months to finally die but every week or two she would
get better for a couple of days and that gave me hope. To this day, I
wonder if I did the right thing for her or was I just being selfish by
hanging on to her as long as possible? I loved her so much that those "good
days" gave me hope that a miracle might happen and she would get past this.

As long as there's life, there's hope? Hopefully, she was better off just
living another day with lots of love. Fred was there with her each day too
and he still misses her to this day...he'll often sleep in her old private
places in the house.

Anyway, it's another Christmas season (bah humbug!) and now Fred seems to be
on a downward trend. It's not time yet for euthanasia but that debatable
time might be fairly soon and leaves me again with the question of how to
handle it. Do I have him euthanized at some point, or do I let him live out
his days at home?

You can only guess which way they would prefer.

Same thing with human's health/life insurance. Ferret's come and go way too
quickly for me (or for any ferret parent). I don't deal with death very
well either.
