The virus does attack the villi, but it isn't related to parvo. In
fact, it is believed to be a mutated human flu virus.

ECE is epizootic catarrhal enteritis, a virus disease of the
intestines. It usually starts with a bit of vomiting followed by
voluminus slimy green diarhea. There is a FAQ on www.ferretcentral.org
on the disease and I suggest you get it and read. When Booger got it,
my vet was very happy that I had brought a copy of it in because he had
never even heard of ECE. We got Booger thru it just fine.

I've never had a ferret affected by it, though quite a few people I've talked
with have had bad luck with new Marshall Farms kits and ECE.

that is why i was wonder...although it doesnt look like it is as deadly as
parvo

Everybody bad-mouths Marshall. Booger is a Marshall ferret. Bonnie &
Clyde are Path Valley kits. Within 36 hours of their arrival here,
Booger came down with ECE. What that tells me is that the Marshall
ferret had never had it and the Path Valley kits had had it quite
recently.

No, if the ferret is young and healthy and aggressive treatment is
started right away, the fatality rate is less than 5%. Until a vaccine
for it comes along, about the best we can hope for is early exposure
and recovery. Otherwise it looks like it's going to be of epidemic
proportions.

Aggressive action, IMO, is aggressive supportive care and veterinary care to
combat the symptoms of ECE - it is a long process and has a lot of ups and
downs, but ECE can be beat - I did it back in 1993, during the initial
outbreak, and subsuquent outbreaks in '96 and '98.
When you see more than one green diarrhea, check for dehydration - if the
ferret is dehydrated - its time to go to the vet. subcutanous fluids,
carafate,
amoxi, pepto, metrodiazonale, whatever the vet prescribes get started
immediately and don't stop until he says to. ECE can affect a ferret for up
to
6 weeks after the initial signs and most have to be force fed.
I prefer to have a tube inserted into the ferrets stomach by way of the neck
for feedings - its much less stressful on the animal and the meds get to
where
they need to be, without worry about taste. My vet is excellent about
inserting
a feeding tube (takes him about 5 minutes and the animal is anesthetized
during
this time) and we usually leave it in place for 2-4 weeks. During that time,
all diet is pureed and strained (cant clog the tube!)
The best thing you can do for your ferret is that if you think they are sick,
get them to a ferret friendly vet as soon as possible.

With all of the adrenal ferrets that I have had, it seems that they all had a
stronger odor than a normal ferret....Its hard to explain, but they have a
strong musky smell that only goes away after successful surgery - I will add
that this only seems to be the case with adrenal girls, not the boys. I have
two right now and they are more oderiferous than any other ferrets.

Could it be the food you're giving them? Is fish high on the list of
ingredients? How about treats? Just like people, some pets can have a
hard time with digesting certain things. Can make their stools smell
bad. It could affect their body odor too.

I would say that was coincidence. My Booger has yellow or khaki
undercoat and dark brown guard hairs. Clyde has pure white undercoat
and black guard hair. I feed IAMS Kitten and Clyde hasn't turned
yellow. Once in a while Booger gets white hair on his face, but that
has to do with seasonal variation.

No. Haven't managed to work it out yet. The thing is...the scent seems to
come and go. The ferrets will be fine and then suddenly a great waft of this
pungent odor. I have no idea where it is coming from or what it is.

Really? That's an interesting point. I wasn't bad mouthing Marshall although
I'm not a big fan. It is simply that I'd only heard of Marshall ferrets
having it and people not realizing what it was.

I would be surprised if it isn't in all the farms to some extent. You
know chickenpox is a mild disease in kids but can be pretty serious in
an adult, so before the vaccine came out, a lot of people used to
deliberately expose their kids to it. I wonder if a similar situation
might not exist with regards to ECE. Maybe it would be best if all kits
were exposed and get it over with.

I lost the post regarding the stomach tube. I have never experienced
having to tube feed any animal until last year when my siamese cat ate
a good deal of a semi poisenous plant (diffenbachia) and jaundiced and
quit eating. She couldn't take food orally, she just plum forgot why she
even eats in the first place. It was really scary for a time because
preparing one of her six to seven daily feedings took quite a bit of time,
what with meds pre and post feeding and preparation of the food itself and
the actual feeding - and she would vomit it all up for the first week and
a half but for an animal as sick as she was and as (I only imagine) a
ferret with ECE would be, tube feedings would be the way to go -
everything gets to where it's supposed to be and regardless of the tbe
medically inserted and hanging out the side of the animal's body, there is
no loss of food or meds and I believe this was a less stressful scenario
for feeding and medication.
