I was in petco in south Austin TX on Thursday and did not like what I saw.
The kits they had were not much bigger than my pet rats and the cage stunk.
They have a sign telling about the kits needs. It says that they eat ferret
food or kitten food, ok info, BUT it says snacks should be fruits and
vegetables. I know raisins and bananas are ok sometimes but the fiber in
everything else is terrible. The cage is not great either. It is glass on
all sides with a metal lid. The lid had lots of quarter size holes in it.
If you stand near it you can smell it and feel the heat radiating from the 6
or 7 fuzzies inside. Usually only 1 or 2 of them even has the gumption to
get up and act cute. Everytime I go in there they have different fuzzies
but I have never seen anyone buying one and I go in there alot (I have 29
pets total).

Someone needs to do something for petstore fuzzies the people that work
there at least in this one could give a care, because I have heard their
advice and suggestions.

Kysha,

The status of petco as a company and as individual stores has been
discussed on APF unto death over the past several years. Although
some petcos seem to be on the ball about the care of animals, most
reports have been similar if not worse than those you bring up.

The general consensus here has been for a while now that we'd like to
see petco stop selling ferrets altogether, but I dont think thats
likely to be a sentiment echoed by a large national chain of stores
that makes fat bank selling kits to people on impulse.

If you can talk to the store manager about the situation(and youre far
nicer than I am, since my immediate reaction is to strangle the 17
year old pimply faced kid with the know it all attitude borne of too
many nights watching scrambled porno on his mom's cable tv and too
many bags of cheetos crunchy) you may be able to affect some change in
your local store.

I guess that I should consider myself lucky. Our local Petco has several
ferret owners working as store clerks for it. Remember not all 17 yr old
pimply face kids are jerks, just a significant portion of them. There are
a fair amount how are quite responsible and are knowledgable about taking
care of the animals at the store.

However by all means complain to the store manager. In fact complain to
the local SPCA and other concerned organizations. The last thing that
Petco managers want is an activist group messing with their bottom lines
by having protests in front of the stores, especially when they are
broadcast on local TV.

larry

I think you're gonna find that pet stores on the whole are seldom as
responsible and caring as they should be. And don't blame the pimply faced
17 year old boy, that kid only makes 6.50 (or less) an hour, why should he
care if his bosses don't? Not everyone is as obssessed with the fair
treatment of animals as us (especially since it's not profitable)
To give a non-ferret example I once was in a pet store in RI and saw young
Caimans for $60. Just to let you know, caimans are basically alligators. The
sign said they grew up to 3-4 feet long, and could be kept in a large tank.
This made me extremely angry as I knew that even dwarf caimans (which are
the smallest kind) grow to about 6 feet which is more than enough to kill a
child or maim an adult., not to mention they need to eat about an entire
chicken every 2 days or so. Caimans cannot be trained or tamed due to the
fact that reptile brains lack the sections that mammals have which give them
social instincts (which is why many reptiles cannibalize), so I can garuntee
that everyone of those poor caimans sold would end up down a toilet within a
year of its sale. I seriously had tears of rage when I saw this, because it
really isnt fair. I also see similar situations with dogs and puppy mills,
which we all know about.
But the most common i think is ferrets. Too many stores sell them at too
high a volume without properly educating their customers. Its not like
buying a dog or cat when you basically know what to expect, many people buy
ferrets and expect to have sort of a hamster-like pet, and when they are
faced with serious health concerns (adrenal tumors) and forced to shell out
$800 for ultrasound and surgery like I had to, they arent willing to and put
the poor things to sleep.
I would seriously like to see the entire pet industry as a whole totally
reformed in the US, but it will never happen, because they're is soooooo
much money involved, and the sad truth is that most people coulndt care
less. Animals are still considerred toys despite all the laws and different
groups protecting them.
I had to resign myself to this and just buy a punching bag.
