Of the 5 ferrets I've owned over the years, two I still have, two died
of old age and one died of a tumor. As my first ferret, Pogo, grew
weaker, barely able to walk but doing his best because FERRETS NEVER
GIVE UP ON LIFE, I called my mother who worked in hospice and asked
for advise. Do I put him down or what? Her answer was to love him,
hold him, help him, talk to him, cuddle him, give him treats and to
let him have his dignity. Good words, I think.

My guide for the time to put them down (any animal, actually) is when
they're not having any fun any more. Fortunately, they're such happy
beasties that's not all that hard to judge. In the mean time, yes, loving
support is the way to go.
