I have recently adopted a 7 year old Lab. I am surprised at the amount of
shedding that this dog does. The hair is everywhere, and it has only been a
week since we have had him. Is there anything on the market that reduces
shedding at all? Or would a trim be in order?

What food are you feeding him? A premium food might help, although most
Labs shed snowdrifts. And this is a time of year when all Labs shed their
winter coats. Trimming is not advised.

This is typical for labs during the spring and fall when they blow their
coats. There isn't anything to reduce the amount of shedding since it
is a normal process. However, just make sure to brush your lab daily.
Try the Zoom Groom or a shedding blade. They will dig down deep in
their coat to get to the undercoat. Labs love the brushing ... it's
like a massage. Oh, and make sure to do this outside so you won't have
wall-to-wall lab fur carpeting!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Labradors where home is where the dog hair
sticks to everything but the dog. You can get some grooming tips here.

What are you feeding him? Diet can make a difference.

I remember a while ago everyone talking about the zoom groom. Do you know
where I can get one? I should of gotten one then but just thought they
would still be selling them around. (www.drsfostersmith.com has one but it
doesn't look the same.) Thanks.

Mine's broken. He doesn't like being brushed *at all*.

Welcome to the world of Lab owning! You will find Lab hairs in the
most unlikely places for the rest of your life <grin>

I have found a wonderful rubber brush that will remove lab hairs from
dark trousers in a trice! I think some hair dressers use them for
brushing hair off clients shoulders after trimming <LOL>

Why is it they decide to brush against you when you have just put on
the dark trousers a second before you leave the house?

We recently bought a new vacuum cleaner and it is wonderful---its a
Dyson---don't know if they are available in the USA, but it certainly
gets them off the carpet and chairs ( the hairs I mean not the dogs
!!)

How about vacuuming the dog itself, if it will let you? If Daisy wasn't
scared of the vacuum, I would run the hose with brush attachment on the end
on her once a day. I know this may seem absurd to some people, but if the
dog doesn't mind, why not??? It would certainly help to cut down on the
amount of shedding, not to mention help keep their fur clean of dirt and
dander. <G>

Try a Shedding Blade, they work great! We usually do it about 3 times a week,
in the Spring, on Cosmo...

You should try brushing him regularly. Trimming wont help.
