Now that I have finished conquering the U.S., it's time
I dusted off the print press and got this paper rolling.

In this first edition, I'd like to talk about the Village.
A quaint little town that popped out of nowhere and landed in
the middle of the Usenet quagmire. And the group, from which
the Village grew.

Our village is global, represented by people from all corners
of the world and from all walks of life, but with a common thread..
a desire to be among others of their kind. Those who enjoy life,
and all it's little quirks..the friendship, the fun, the Pussy
Parlour.

The reason for this editorial is simple. A while back there was a
particularly antagonistic poster who made comments about the
group..nothing new there, we get that all the time..but it occured
to me that his mind set could be shared by others who happen to
wander in here. The one comment in particular was about this group
being a 'clique' I scoffed, and thought 'how ridiculous'. But after
thinking
about it a bit, I realized that it could very well seem like just that
to
someone new. So, I will attempt to make understood, our little group.

APFPY wasn't built in a day..(well, probably only in a couple of
hours, but
you know what I mean) It was started by Eugene back in September of
1996
out of a need to have a penpal forum for people older than those who
frequented
the other penpal groups..ie Soc.penpals. When you have a group with a
lot of
young, immature people, you get a lot of flame wars and infighting,
and that's
not what most people of our age group were looking for.
It was a great idea, and was a success right from the start. A few
bumps at
first, but nothing serious and once the dust settled it was a nice
comfortable
place to be.

Along the way, the most amazing thing happened. Instead of just being
a place
to post an ad for penpals, people started interacting with each other
within the
ng..friendships developed. Long and lasting friendships. Real life
'meets' were
organized, I've personally met over a dozen of the posters here. And
these meets
have been done all over, Canada, US, and the UK.
We have also had marriages of people who have met here..people who
would
otherwise never had met. So saying this is a life-changing medium is
no exaggeration.

So yes, in a way, we may 'seem' cliquish..but it's only natural we
would be
comfortable with those we've known for so long.

BUT!! This group is about growth too..getting to know and make new
friends.
It's an ever-changing group, some have left, new ones have come in.
The thing
to always remember is we were all new here at one time. It's not
something we
forget, and we do try our best to welcome those who find us and decide
they
want to stay. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but I can guarantee
that those
who do decide to stay will never be sorry. You'll forge friendships
you never
believed possible, and you'll be a part of a group that will get to
know you and
come to care for you as much as we do about each other.

That is a given.

Well said, Karen. However, I think you need to go further and say something
about the diversity of opinion that people may encounter. I mean, it would
be no fun if we were all of the Borg and thought the same way. If this
group were like that, I wouldn't waste my time here. But having a
difference of opinion doesn't mean you don't like someone. Nor does it mean
you are deliberately trying to wind people up. Personally, I think this
group would be better and stronger if it were more tolerant of minority
opinion. If people genuinely want to grow, they must be open to the views
of other people (however off-the-wall they may appear). Remember it takes
all sorts to make a village. Good luck.

Excuse me, Captain...can I just ask when "the group" (which is made up
of individuals...who are "all sorts" of people, and which is changing
all the time) has not been tolerant of minority opinion? Can you give
me an example? I myself have opinions that are about as far away from
the 'majority' on many different subjects, have expressed them freely
here and felt no animosity from anyone for it.

So I guess your post sorta puzzles me. No, we don't suffer fools
lightly here...we might stomp on trolls whose sole purpose is to stir
up shit and trounce on those who would use this "penpals" group as a
"personals ads" group, but overall, I think we're one of the most
tolerant and friendly groups I have ever had the pleasure of stumbling
into.

Nice to meet you, by the way. Stick around (in something other than
lurk mode) why don't you? :)

Well Cap'n, I don't know of any instance in here where an opinion
wasn't respected. There certainly have been opposing opinions, and
very lively discussions about said opinions. Some have even got a bit
heated..depending on the topic and how strongly one feels about it.
There are quite a few of us who hold 'unpopular' opinions on various
subjects, and we've discussed them at length, each side giving their
argument in favour of what they believe. It's a very rare thing to see
these threads sink to the flame war level, and in the end we usually
agree to disagree and go on to something else.
None of us expect, nor would we want, everyone to think the same
as we do. It would be a damn boring place if that happened eh?

On the other hand..if one comes in and is deliberately provoking, we
can and do deal with that too. First, maybe giving the benefit of the
doubt, but if that person persists, then he/she is dealt with.
While I don't now, nor have I ever seen this group as a clique, I DO
know that when push comes to shove, we will band together and
protect what we consider a second home..and if one of our own is
attacked or being singled out for abuse, we react to that too.

There is a vast difference between a person having an opinion, and
a person looking to stir things up. And for the most part, the
instincts of those in here are usually dead on, in determining which
category said poster fits in.

This is one of the most tolerant groups I have ever been involved with. Lots of
diverse opinions and great discussion/arguments, but I have never known anyone
to be treated rudely or blown off IF they were sincere in their opinions. I am
not sure when you think the people in the group have been intolerant of
someone.

Jeanie and Annette. Well, methinks they think I am a liar and a hypocrite.
Perhaps it's too hard to believe anyone other than people living in North
America might be happy with their life. On the otherhand, perhaps they saw
me as an easy target - just another unsuspecting punter who is easily
baited. I have since looked through the Google archive and find I am not
the first person to think that. Also John (tAg) took an instant dislike to
me, and his loyal friends followed suit. In particular, there was a
diatribe against England and the English from Carliebear who characterised
England as being awash with left-wingers who hate blacks and French people.
This would be funny if it wasn's so bigotted. Most of the left-wingers I
know are pro-actively against racism. As for hating French people, well, I
have spent my holidays there over many years. I love France. As for stating
unpopular opinions, you should realize that when people criticise American
policy, it is the policy they dislike and not the people (nor the culture
for that matter). I sometimes get the impression that Americans sometimes
forget that people have the right to free speech, and that one of the
things that entails is that you might hear things that may displease you.
So, anyway, Jeanie decides I'm a troll. Her loyal friends follow her lead.
I get a message from Spuddie saying "fuck off and die" - this from a person
I have never had cross words with. And you wonder why new people don't hang
around for more than a couple of weeks. Maybe some of them are transients
anyway. I wonder how many are put off by the ethos of the group.

Excuse me for dropping in - but I simply feel I have to reply to your
statement.

I have often posted my personal opinion in this group, about various
issues like death penalty, US politics, Mr.Bush, gun laws, war and
such. Very often I felt like standing alone with my point of view, and
surely most of the American penpals didn't like much of what I said.
Nevertheless, we've had serious but friendly, tolerant discussions
about these things, and so far I still feel like a "tolerated" member
of this group. I guess, you might have gotten a completely wrong
"first impression" when you first posted in this group. But, please,
think it over: Maybe you should have lurked for a while to pick up the
atmosphere in here and then have made a "perfect" start? Or maybe you
simply have been misunderstood? Why not be tolerant and give those who
thought you were a troll a second chance? Doesn't hurt, does it?

I don't think any newbies are put off by "the ethos" of this group. In
fact, this is a caring, sharing, colourfull and really tolerant group.
If you stay - you're going to find out, I'm sure.:)

Oh - and if you should reply to this, please don't think I don't have
more to say <g>, but I'll be gone for a couple of days - without
internet access.

Excuse me...but that's a bunch of baloney! If you look at Google (as
you say you do), I think you'll find that you were warmly welcomed
when you first arrived here. You spent over a month posting and
interacting on a regular basis and no one here batted an eyelash at
you. It was when your posts started to deteriorate--and by that I mean
you started calling names and making things 'personal' rather than
discussing issues rationally--that people started being 'not so nice'
back to you. It wasn't your views that weren't accepted, it's that you
weren't able to discuss rationally without taking things personally.

Sooooo...hearing someone else's opinion about England that doesn't
agree with yours isn't acceptable then? Everyone's supposed to agree
with you? Maybe Carl's opinion is in the minority...but weren't you
just saying that minority opinions should be accepted along with the
rest? Or does that only apply if the minority opinion is yours?

I do hope you realize that Americans are *not* in the majority here
when it comes to regular posters...oh sure, there's a few of us. But
when you add together the Brits, the Canadians, the Germans, the South
Africans and the Ozzies, I rather think we're outnumbered...so I'm not
sure why you mention "Americans" specifically.

>So, anyway, Jeanie decides I'm a troll. Her loyal friends follow her lead.

As I said, you participated here and seemed just fine for more than a
month. I don't tell people to FOAD unless there's good reason. And in
my opinion, insulting my friends is a good reason. (Remember guys?
This is John(UK) the praline fan aka John Jones the furryworm who told
Jeanie "not to forget your bat" during an attempted discussion where
he also belittled her opinions, told Anamanda to "go back to picking
on the unsuspecting; it's more your style"...among other things.)

I don't know what happened...did you get into a fresh bottle of whisky
that week or run out of your antipsychotic medications or what? You
had seemed to be a pretty reasonable person up to that point.

I think you need to get a sense of proportion, Spuddie. Saying "don't forget
to take your bat home" isn't very rude. In fact on a scale of 1 to 10, I
would hardly rate it a 3. And no it wasn't alcohol induced or the result of
a psychosis. It may have been that I was tired or lacking the mental energy
to get into convoluted arguments. Sometimes I'm just plain lazy. I rate
Jeanie as very bright and her case was well argued. Maybe she deserved a
better response than the one she got from me, but I'm not always on top
form, and even I (a philosophy graduate) can lapse into rhetoric at times.

Ok..we'll take this bit by bit shall we? I'm not very computer savvy,
which in itself is terrible, given the amount of time I've been on
here...but, I digress. I have to wonder about anyone who feels the
need to come in under so many different guises. Why is that?

I have to admit when I first read this, I felt bad for you..but I was
also skeptical..I have known all four of the women you have mentioned
for quite a long time in here, and I knew with certainty that NONE of
them are, nor have they ever been, malicious or mean-spirited.
So, I used my limited knowledge and did a simple check of the headers
from your post..and compared them with Stig..they were the
same..surprise eh? And mister, even you would have to admit that when
you came in under that name, you were antagonistic attacking the GOFC
with snide comments..you didn't bother to explain why you felt the way
you did, you just jumped in with both feet and fired away. Did you
honestly not expect responses to that? And more to the point, who was
doing the baiting in that instance?

Again, I have never figured out how to do them Google searches, but
there are other far more clever people in here..Spuddie for instance,
and she sure found out a lot in those archives didn't she? I do
remember the John UK and the comments made to Jeanie, and if that
was you, you certainly have no cause for complaint when you get back
what you dish out.
Carliebear is a person of no pretense..he may have very different
views of the Brits than most of us here, but they are his views, and
he doesn't hide behind a mask when he states them. He's also a
perfect example of how we in the group DO accept minority opinion.
He's always been liked and accepted in here.

I think Spuddie already addressed this one..Americans make up only a
portion in this group. I'm not American, but Canadian, which is
probably the same in your eyes..actually, it is the same except we say
'eh' a lot more.
And let's be clear about something here..Free Speech is a right in
every democratic country..but that doesn't give license to say
insulting and derogatory things..there is a vast difference between
freedom of speech and just plain rudeness..and I think you know that
that line had been crossed.

Let me ask you something..if you were hosting a party and some person
came in and started insulting your guests, would you politely smile
and ignore that person? Or would you be showing them the door?
I don't recall all the details of when you were yet another person
here, but I stand by my opinion that if Jeanie (and the others)
thought you were a troll, then she had reason to think so. The fact
that you resorted to name-calling and snide remarks in response to her
does little to further your cause. Of all the people in here, Jeanie
is usually the very first to welcome them, this is not the actions of
someone looking for trouble..she is what she appears to all of us who
know her, a lady, and a caring person...AND one who doesn't hide
behind a multitude of masks.

I'm not worried about anyone being put off by the ethos of this group.
We welcome all who are 'genuinely' interested in joining...but
obviously it's not to everyone's taste.
I do hope that you finally find what you are looking for.

Scuse me Cap'n. Why would you use another name and have another try here?
Be assured, you would not get the plank treatment if you have not deserved
it.
Care to tell us if you perhaps posted under more names here than the
present one and the one mentioned of the past?
A simple yes would do.
I really don't care how many names a person use to post under here, as long
as he/she change personality and writing style as well.
It is just too boring for words to plank the same person over and over again
for the same offence, just because he/she uses a different name.

Anyhow, since I don't feel guilty, I cannot apologise - but for some reason
I feel we will see each other at the plank again - soon.

Of course I have used different aliases. There's absolutely nothing to stop
me doing that. But the purpose has not been to deceive. Why do you think I
always post from the same ISP - Planet Online? The clues are in the headers
as you have rightly discovered.

Is antagonistic illegal? Or do you prefer that only the older members of the
group are allowed to be antagonistic? Isn't that a case of dual standards?

The only problem with your thesis here is I wasn't dishing anything out. I
was expressing a genuinely felt concern over a political issue.

I'm amazed you mentioned these lovely rodentia - some time ago when I was
whimsically contemplating the prospect of retiring to the country with a young

marmosets in the bathtub

It wasn't just that one statement...it was the whole tone your
discussion with Jeanie had taken. She was trying to have a genuine
discussion with you, had obviously spent a lot of time writing
responses, and when she'd make a point, you'd sarcastically write, "So
what?" Several times. She politely asked you to explain some of your
points further and you made a joke of it and basically inferred that
she was a war-mongering American and that was the whole problem. And
it wasn't just that one thread that prompted me to tell you to
FOAD...it was the whole tone of your posts over a few days' time. They
had noticeably changed with everyone you were interacting with on the
group. I don't know why Anamanda apologized to YOU...it certainly
should have been the other way around as far as I'm concerned! As long
as people agreed with you, you were fine...but let some disagreement
creep in and suddenly we're the bad guys and you start making personal
attacks.

Then why not just come back and say, "Gee, sorry...I've been a little
tired and stressed of late, I know some of my responses have been
brusque and sarcastic...sorry, let's get on with it." We ALL have bad
days and go through moods...none of us is top form all the
time...we're human, after all. The "sensible" thing to do would've
been to give us some insight into what was happening with you. After
all, you had only been around for a month...we didn't know you well
enough to just think, "Ah, John must be going through a bad patch
again, let's cut him some slack." Which is what we regulars often will
do with each other...because we've been here and stuck it out over
time.

But instead of an explanation, you simply left and didn't come back.
And when you do come back, you post under two different names (again)
and with the same negative, bristly attitude, saying it's 'our fault'
you didn't fit in. And no, it's not illegal to post under different
names. Not at all. True, you made no attempt at munging the headers,
but most folks here tend to take people at face value unless something
makes them suspect that something's amiss. It does make me wonder why
you would want to change identities so often if you genuinely *want*
to fit in here as you say you do. And if you don't want to...what on
earth are you bitching about?

This is a penpals group--people post here looking for e-mail pals.
It's also a usenet group with no set topic, just a bunch of people who
started hanging out here and posting...being part of this group is
about getting to know each other, sharing and discussing. Many of us
have been here since the groups inception in the fall of '96 or
shortly thereafter. When you've been interacting with several of the
same people for that long, and in many cases have even met some of
them in person, your bond and loyalty to them is going to be much
stronger than to someone like yourself who has been here for a short
time. If outsiders come in and attack some of those people--whom I
think of as friends and adopted family--you're darned right we will
circle the wagons and protect each other! And defending friends is
something I won't apologize for.

Does that make us a clique?? You may think so, but I don't...many
folks over the years have left, many other new people have come in and
joined and become active participants and 'regulars' here. Several of
our current regulars have been around less than a year. There are
people from all walks of life who have differing opinions on all sorts
of matters within the group of regulars. We represent a fairly wide
cross-section of humanity and yet we all manage to get along most of
the time (yes, we DO sometimes even have arguments amongst ourselves!)
because we respect each other. We don't care if you're black, white,
brown or purple; if you're Christian, Muslim, or athiest; if you're
Canadian, Chinese or Russian; if you're a bricklayer, a CEO of a
company or unemployed; you could be a double-amputee transvestite
Jewish mulatto Communist lawyer from Bumfuck, Egypt and you could
become part of this group...as long as you respect others and their
opinions, can give and take, and can accept the rest of us as human,
you'll be welcome. Finger-pointing, name-calling and nastiness
generally begets the same.

I know there's nothing to stop you, or anyone from doing that..but I

tolerate it)

Antagonistic is certainly not illegal, but if one chooses to post that
way, why would they feel they have a right to later whine about the
like-responses he/she gets?
I haven't found any of the regular/older members starting out to be
antagonizing..but on the other hand, I can sure vouch that almost
every one of them can be if provoked...

I am not aware of that thread, so can't comment on it..I don't get
involved with political issues in the group as a rule..I am active in
the politics of my country where I can make a difference, but am not
really up on the world at large.
The post I WAS referring to, was the one you replied to under the name
Stig in response to Ærchie's reposting the GOFC stats. You were openly
critical and almost hostile about the group..so yes, you were dishing
it out..and without provocation.

Unlike you, and your many guises..I don't play games..I play in here,
have fun, and go on about my day..but I don't and won't do the kind of
games you obviously like to play. You want to be Stig...or John
Jones..or whoever else you are? Fine..have fun with it
But know this..your very attitude and unwillingness to be YOU is what
is causing all your problems. You cry about the group shunning you
and casting you aside..when that is impossible, because I doubt anyone
here has even seen the real you. Why exactly is that?

Consider yourself honoured..this was the first time I tried looking at
headers, mostly to see if I could..I was quite pleased to have found
the connection...made me feel a lot less DiPpy.
But I'll pass on your offer, if you are in fact in here, unhidden and
well accepted, then good..it restores my faith in mankind.

Be assured that I, being from the country with the most progressive and

There are rumours around Osgoode, that u-no-who got her watermelon patch
well hidden and isn't telling anybody where it is. I've noticed she isn't
leaving the garden the same time as her helpers. She heads into another

We have all those here, of a variety. The big hairy ones are out in the desert.
My dad used to deliver milk on Dugway Proving Grounds over Skull Valley way.
Just out of Johnson's pass there was a long straight stretch to the base gate.
The t*******as used to crawl up on the road at night where the asphalt held the
heat. It was a completely, absolutely frightening thing to drive down out of
the pass and see them all over the road. The milk truck was faster than they
were that early too. Rather like squishing golf balls. Oh dear. Sorry 'bout
that.

Oh Stig, I already like you! In fact, I believe I am developing a bit
of a crush on you. It's that "bad boy" thing.

Of course if everyone else starts finding out you're really a nice
guy, and liking you, I may have to dump you.

It's a nice speech, Spuddie. And if it were true, it would be a great
speech. But we all know that the reality of this group is not so much about
making new friends, but picking on the unsuspecting. I'm not the first to
say it, and I doubt I will be the last. If that leave the hapless punter
like me with nothing else but to have a bit of trollish fun in return, then
so be it.

So now Spuddie is a liar.

John, if you care to go back to the beginning of your dis-satisfaction
you will remember that it came about because of a discussion which you
changed from the gerenal to the personal. You then became upset when
the people you attacked as people retaliated. Since then you have
become a total bore with your refusal to accept responsibility for
your actions. When I first saw the "Stig" signature I thought the post
it was under was from a juvenile. I thought exactly the same when I
first saw your Captain Sensible posts.

John, here we try to play the ball and not the man, a rule you appear
to wish to ignore.

So - I am red carding you.

Goodbye.
