Certainly, words alone cannot describe what these two creative geniuses did,
but to have seen or heard their work firsthand....If you could travel back
in time and witness either of the following men performing their art, which
would you choose?

A--Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel
B--Bach playing one of his famous concerti on the organ

Michelangelo. I'm more visual that aural. (Truth be told, I'm tone
deaf).

michaelangelo, because the painting he did is really and truthfully artistic
genius, i saw it many years ago, when i went there on holiday. that was
before i got interested in photographing the places i went.

FYI, the Sistine Chapel ceiling is a fresco not a painting, which means that
very little would be observed in a short stay, you would need several weeks or
months to actually see any progress.

B. Because it rhymes with Bach:)))
No - I will go with B - because my neck will get lame to stare at the
ceiling for years:)))

Michelangelo, because of being in a very different time.

I'd have to pick Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel.

To travel back in time to when the paints were as Michelangelo saw them
would be a unique experience in itself, and an artist's style is unique,
so it would not be possible to watch a modern artist performing the same
task and get the same experience.

On the other hand, I think I would be disappointed if I travelled back
in time to hear Bach playing, as my ears are attuned to the much more
powerful 20th Century musical instruments. There are arguments both ways
over this: the Early Music Movement (Orchestra of the Age of
Enlightenment, London Classical Players, etc) try to recreate the sound
that the composer would have heard by using instruments as authentic as
possible, and sometimes they produce something which we have lost when
using our modern instruments; but I have also heard it said that
Beethoven would have been delighted to have had a modern piano to play
his music on.

I think that if I had to choose, that because we have Bach's sheet music
and can play it on either modern or period instruments, even though
there will always be arguments (like the one about Beethoven's metronome
markings and whether he misread his metronome) that the more unique
experience would have to be seeing Michelangelo painting, as it is
impossible to know exactly what the ravages of time have done to the
dyes in the paints he used.

The more I think about this one, the more I wish I could witness *both*!

Bach. I don't have the patience to sit for years and watch Michelangelo
paint.

It would have to be Bach I guess...I'm not really into sitting around
watching paint dry. <G>

Michelangelo. Because he painted the figures nude, and when the pope saw it
he tried to make Michel paint clothes on them. He refused and another
painter was called in to paint the clothes on them. I would like to have
been there to hear the conversation.

ps. I have seen the chapel and the painting. It is unique, and marvelous.

A - I am more of a visual person, so seeing this wonderful work
of art would really be wonderful for me.

Bach, Bach Bach and more Bach...easy choice for this music lover. Hmmmmm, might
have wavered had you mentioned Monet instead of Michelangelo

Went something like this:
Pope- Mika, you feelthy beast, putta som clothes on demma figures!!
Mich- Hey Popa, you go screw yourself!
Pope- Mika, you do as I say or I willa exacommunicata you!!
Mich- Supposa I maka de genitals asmaller?
Pope- Maka the genitals asa big as you like justa painta the clothes over them.

Mich obviously didn't like this compromise and threw his pot of paint in the
Pope's face....

A- Michelangelo, but only on the last couple of days so that I could really appreciate
everything else he had done. The first day or so would probably be quite boring!! if one
can use that word.
