This was posted in this group in 1996. I think it deserves a repost.

John Fitzsimons: If a physical person seems knowledgeable then I might
ask him "Where did you get your knowledge ?" I think that this is a
fairly reasonable question. I do the same with guides. Often the
answer is that they got the info from guides of a more evolved
vibration.

Nigel Cooper: This is the standard guide cop out. Made famous, of
course, by Silver Birch, who said from the comfort of Maurice
Barbanell's body in the safety of Hannen Swaffer's home circle, when
pressed on the subject, that he was only an intermediary. A spokes-
spirit for those of too high a vibration to reach the earth plane.

Ramon: Would you rather he lied, and told you it was on his own
authority? Silver Birch has a humility that never puts himself forward
as an authority, never wants worship or adulation for himself, and is
probably the gentlest, kindest, most loving guide to ever speak
through a medium.

Nigel Cooper: What a neat way of giving what you say authority without
taking responsibility..

Ramon: Silver Birch has always warned against believing anything just
because it was spoken by spirit. He always said "Use your own reason
and common-sense. If anything we say seems to you to be illogical,
unreasonable, or false, then do not accept it." And that's pretty good
advice for handling ALL teachings, whether they come from spirit or
not.

We should accept only what is sensible, uplifting, ennobling, and only
if the practice of it makes us a better, kinder, more loving person
who is capable of easing the suffering of others, better able to make
a worthwhile contribution to our society. If any teaching is depraved,
disturbing, unbalancing, or if the practice of it puts you out of
harmony with yourself or your society, or if the practice of it would
make you less able to partake in camaraderie, or the happy
companionship of other decent, responsible citizens, then of course it
is false, and should not be accepted, no matter where it comes from.

Nigel Cooper: The deep trance mediums I have seen seem to express an
aspect of their personality when "channelling" that is not expressed
well when awake. Usually it is something to do with the authority of
spirit wisdom, (or perhaps the wisdom of spirit authority).

Ramon: As Silver Birch so often said, there is no authority over you
higher than your own conscience. The phrase "spirit authority" is a
self-contradictory one. The spirit guides are there to serve us, not
the other way around. "It would be so easy for us to say goodbye
forever to the Earth Plane and all its woes, and dwell in the holy
light of the lands of pure Divine Love, joy, and beauty, untroubled by
the things of the lower planes. But we love you. So we have returned
to help you, to ease your suffering, to calm your troubled mind, to
serve you in all ways, as best we can, because our greatest joy of all
will be to re-unite with you, to have you take your place by our side
in the worlds of love." - (Silver Birch)

Nigel Cooper: I have never seen any evidence of the presence of a
higher or more evolved being. I have never seen a feat or trick of
psychisim performed that could not be performed by a non spirit
assisted person.

Ramon: And you never will. The genuine guides do not do tricks for
amusement, or to satisfy idle curiosity, or to force skeptics into
submission. They are simply there help us find our way back to inner
peace, inner harmony, inner strength. They are there to help us
overcome our selfishness, our pride, our fears, and to help all those
who are trying to grow, to develop the purity of our love, our
compassion, our sensitivity to others in need, our ability to respond
with kindness to our fellow-man.

Nigel Cooper: When I have seen evidence that could speak to the
presence of a dis-incarnate being, that being has never seemed a very
evolved or wise being, (except that being dead is a step on from being
alive). On the contrary, such beings have seemed narrow minded and
selfish,

Ramon: Not all beings who say they are spirit really are. If they
don't seem wise or evolved, it may be because it is just an Earth
person acting in order to fool others. If they are being narrow-minded
or selfish, just leave politely and don't go back.

Nigel Cooper: and not adverse to licking up to somebody who doesn't
seem to be buying the goods.

Ramon: Some people need to be handled very carefully, to help them
gradually. If they are good people, then confronting them with things
about themselves that they are not yet ready to face would be
inappropriate. The guides are always kind and loving, they are not
there to argue with you. They see the good side of everyone because
they don't judge anyone, and neither should we.

Nigel Cooper: Good point. I'm trying to express that frustration I
felt when, as a younger person, I sat with baited breath in a circle
of people straining to catch words of wisdom from some long dead,
highly evolved being. "It's lovely here dear, Grandpa and Grandma are
here with me. You mind you get your lumbago seen to. Oh.. and um
yes... The cosmic ray of the 7th principal is acting on the Earth.
There will be floods and earthquakes, but don't worry - the true
believers will be teleported to an alternate Earth and only the ones
that don't believe in spirit will suffer. Ta ta for now dear."

Ramon: If this is an accurate portrayal of what occurred in the group
you went to, it was a blatantly false group, with absolutely no
connection with the spirit world whatsoever. But I'm not surprised you
went there. As your tone is defensive and argumentative, rather than
simply cautious, it seems that you may not yet qualify for being
guided to a genuine group.

I hope this helps, and that you are not offended by anything I've
said.
