And even in our generation, we've had televisions shows depicting this
very concept. If anyone remembers the US show "Sliders" you'll know
exactly what I'm talking about. And more currently, the Canadian/
South African production "Charlie Jade" http://www.charliejade.info/story.php
was about a small system of multiverses.
What is this concept? In nutshell it's that the TimeLine is like a
tree, laying on it's side. With each major decision a new branch
sprouts, and that in turn gets divided into smaller and smaller
branches and then twigs as time continues down a linear path. As
decisions are made, or Choices, the other choices that could be are
also made, and the TimeLine splits, and a new branch is formed, one to
accommodate each choice available.
Do I believe this personally? Yes and No. Who has the power to
determine which choices are important enough to cause a change in the
TL? If every decision made by every person were to cause a change,
there would be chaos. We'd all have conflicting memories. So how big
does the decision have to be? A country? A few million people all
choosing the same thing? A few thousand?
Or are multiple realities a natural phenomenon, that has nothing to do
with our TimeLine and our choices.
And what of our counterparts in those Realities? Do we share the same
soul? Do we even have doppelgangers in those Realities?
It's a far reaching topic. One I've given a lot of thought to over
the years. If nothing else, it keeps the brain active and stretching
into new areas by making connections and thinking thoughts not
previously thought before.

"chaos" - it is an exactly how "existence" works; "everything" does
happen but only tiny (still enormously huge) consistent subset has
survived for a while. Such timeless "natural selection" for existence
is going on at all levels and it is limited only by your ability to
imagine it. Such phenomenon as "Reality/Consciousness" is an emergent
manifestation of survived plots/lines.
(*) Anything what can make choice in fact makes all of them but
probability distribution of choices are not flat/equal it depends on
"Consciousness" state. Each of choices cause the correspondent child-
consciousness which is slightly different from parent -> GOTO (*) and
so on. Note: naturally only survived plots are going on.
You may see that there is no "multiple realities" since each reality
is an illusion from point of view of particular "consciousness" state
just because it can not see its own branching.
