A spate of UFO sightings by pilots over the Pacific seem to have resolved
into a mix of different things -- not all of them mundane.

A user on a debunking website has convinced experts a chunk
of the sightings are Starlink sats. Despite appearing to move in
circular paths, the sats are moving in more or less straightline orbits
but seen from a high-alt moving aircraft seem to be moving in circular paths.

However, another bunch of pilot UFO's seem to be other things --
e.g. bright objects that initially look like meteors coming down from
space but then stop, hover or take sharp turns and start to move parallel
to the surface.

The whole episode underlines how hard to can be to understand what
you are seeing even if you are an expert in the relevant enviroment.

But it also shows you can't dismiss a bunch of reports as "all the same
thing" because even one unexplained case may indicate a significant risk
posed to flight safety.

In other news the latest UFO report to Congress is now a month late.
Pre-release comments from military officials tried to dismiss the
whole phenom as Chinese drones and chaff, but insiders say even
restricting their list to "sightings" to military reports over the past
2years there are 100s of sightings that can not be easily explained,
some of them with classified videos attached as interesting or even
more interesting than the released "go fast" and "gimball" videos that
started the latest push for full govt disclosure of what is known about
the funny objects reliable witnesses report seeing in the sky and sea.

Recent Pilot UAP Sightings Point to Aviation Safety Challenges, Experts Say

Micah Hanks and Chrissy Newton
30 Nov 2022

Several incidents in a recent spate of pilot sightings of unidentified
aerial phenomena (UAP) may have down-to-earth explanations, according
to experts who have analyzed witness accounts and videos of the
objects, which they say reveal broader issues related to aviation safety.

Although several of the sightings remain unexplained, even those with
explanations point to the challenges pilots face in identifying and
reporting potential hazards to commercial aviation, according to
experts The Debrief has spoken with.

The unusual luminous displays, some appearing to exhibit circular
movement patterns that have been likened to "racetrack" formations,
were first reported by American pilots beginning in early August.

On Oct 19, The Debrief reported on several of the recent
incidents, first investigated by researcher and television personality
Ben Hansen, who posted several videos online provided to him by pilots
who filmed the objects.

Soon afterward, a plausible solution was put forward on the popular
Metabunk website by one of its users, "Flarkey," who demonstrated that
most of the objects appearing in the videos were consistent with the
position and movement of Starlink satellites at the time of the
sightings. In a subsequent video that appeared on his YouTube channel,
Metabunk creator Mick West detailed the process originally used by
Flarkey to resolve several of the pilot sightings. ...

Ben Hansen told The Debrief in a phone call that his recent
independent analysis of the videos with collaborator Brittany Barbieri
also points to Starlink satellites as the source of many of the recent
sightings. However, like West, Hansen and Barbieri also note that a
handful of the sightings still appear to describe something that could
be more difficult to resolve.

"Within these same cases that we're getting of objects that are
circulating and going in a revolving motion, we also have objects that
streak down like a meteor and stop or take turns anywhere from 20
degrees to a full course reversal, sometimes within the same event,"
Hansen told The Debrief.

Hansen described one report he received from a pilot in recent weeks
where a stationary object was observed as it appeared to brighten,
then "took off like a bolt of lightning straight down toward the
water." He adds that in other accounts shared with him and Barbieri,
some of the objects appear to exhibit changes in direction, sudden
acceleration, and other movements and characteristics that are
difficult to explain. ...

Although it remains in question whether more of the recent pilot UAP
sightings can be attributed to observations of Starlink satellites,
all the experts The Debrief spoke with in recent days seemed to share
at least one common overarching concern: that such sightings--whether
involving known, or genuinely unknown objects--may all potentially
introduce challenges to aviation safety.

"These sightings, even if they are 100% satellite flares, are a
legitimate safety concern," Mick West told The Debrief. "A pilot who
thinks they are seeing some mysterious craft will be a distracted
pilot. They may also tie up ATC's time and resources."

In addition to distractions that might arise from the potential
misidentification of satellites and other known objects, instances
involving legitimate close-range pilot encounters with unidentified
flying objects could present even more direct challenges to aviation
safety. ...

[At the same time the NUFORC reported 2736 sightings.
Comparing day-to-day reports with various events that folklore says
are related to the appearance of unknown objects in the sky and
ocean ~200 people a year in the US go missing in a non-chance
similar pattern. A similar pattern between UFO sightings and missing
people is also seen in Australia, the UK and Europe. It may explain
why military aircraft are "often" seen (13 such reports to the NUFORC
in 2021) chasing or otherwise interacting with unusual things in the sky.
There are other, more interesting, data. Informal examination of
images from various space telescopes appears to show unexplained
brightening and darkening across parts of the sky -- even in images
not marked "affected by stray light of unknown origin" -- that occur
in non-chance correlation with UFO sightings at ground level.
The telescopes seem to "see" things coming and going several days
before and several days after ground-level sighting reports].

Navy tells watchdog site releasing all UFO videos would
'harm national security'
Washington Examiner on MSN.com, 09 Sep 2022 19:26Z
A watchdog website says its Freedom of Information Act request for
every UFO video held by the Navy was denied due to national security reasons.
The Black Vault says that, since April 2020, it has been attempting to
get all videos of UFOs (also called unidentified aerial phenomena)
possessed by the Navy via a FOIA request.
After receiving several rejections in which the Navy would neither
confirm nor deny the existence of the videos, the group says it
received a response denying the request for the "sensitive information."
"The requested videos contain sensitive information pertaining to
Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and are classified and are exempt
from disclosure," the letter read. "The release of this information
will harm national security."
[Every frame apparently contains things too scary to show the public].

How big a deal is NASA's new UFO study?
[image] An unidentified flying object, as seen by a US Navy jet.
Space.com, 18 July 2022
In early June, NASA announced that it's commissioning an independent study
on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), as UFOs have recently been rebranded.
The intent is to move the scientific understanding of UAP forward, said
Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA's associate administrator for science.
"NASA believes that the tools of scientific discovery are powerful and apply
here also," Zurbuchen said in a statement (opens in new tab). "We have
access to a broad range of observations of Earth from space - and that
is the lifeblood of scientific inquiry. We have the tools and team who can
help us improve our understanding of the unknown. That's the very definition
of what science is. That's what we do."
The UAP study team will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, previously
the chair of the astrophysics department at Princeton University.
"Given the paucity of observations, our first task is simply to gather
the most robust set of data that we can," Spergel said in the NASA
statement. "We will be identifying what data -- from civilians,
govt, non-profits, companies -- exists, what else we should try
to collect and how to best analyze it."
[The investigation of why NASA has missed something obvious to many
for the past 65+ years will come later. But it argues that classical
approaches of Organised Science might draw another blank on UFO's].
