I must admit, I'm a novice in the area of witchcraft, and have many
questions. I've never claimed to have knowledge superior to others in this
field. (I just want to make that clear, so people don't misunderstand. I'm
not picking a fight or anything!) Anyway, the subject of herbs is of
particular interest to me, especially in the context of writing my own
spells. I've been researching various web sites on herbal correspondences
lately and have found several to have quite comprehensive lists, however, I
recently came upon a site which lists properties of herbal blends. This
sparked a question in my mind. (I'm not quite sure how to phrase this the
right way, so I hope people can understand what I'm trying to ask.) Say for
instance I'm trying to write a spell for... protection. So, I go to one of
the pages I've found which list herb correspondences... and find an herb
known for its protective qualities. Now, say I want to make this spell more
specific. I want to protect my home from negative energy. So I go to that
same list and find another herb known for its ability to banish negative
energy. Now, if in the context of the spell, I were to combine these two
herbs, would it alter their known individual properties? That is the
question the site based on properties of herbal blends has raised. I would
appreciate serious responses to this question and I look forward to hearing
what people have to say. I would to say ahead of time, that I appreciate any
time anyone puts into their response to my question. Thanks!

Brenda
Yes, it would alter the abilities somewhat. Of course, another way to
alter them is to actually grow the herb, and keep it alive instead of
cut. Especially with protection, I prefer planting the herbs as part of
the ritual, since it tends to appear as more permanent. It does require
more planning though.

I think I understand... it alter it in that the second herb would give it
more of a specific direction, like it would in the spell itself, right? With
the one herb, its just for protection, but in adding the second herb, it
becomes a more specific form of protection, and thus slightly alters the
first. I think I have that right, but please, by all means, correct me if
I've got it wrong.

As in sort of a living protection, I see.

Another one for the great Brenda quotes? Nah, second rate. You CAN do
dumber. C'mon, Brenda, we all know you can. But, I think this is at
least an 8. Not the best I've seen, but the irony bar don't get any more

"because then your learning will slow down immeasureably I feel and you
will be a person who dresses up the part of witch......like a nice

But here's a couple of the best:
"When a person does this..who has been putting
down other faiths for the same behaviour....I call
into question his hypocrisy."
- Brenda
"I don't have a problem with varying opinions....when they are stated
*in my opinion..."
- Brenda
Have you seen Brenda say something dumber?
Then I am not surprised.

my best guess at this point.

Learn from who, you? Bwahahahahahahaha. Since she's making up her
own mind about you, chances are you'll be unhappy about that and pigeon-hole
her replies to you as "school-yarding".
> If you would be....then

Blenda hasn't the slightest clue about the "ways of witches" save for
her mundane view from the outside.

"Powerful witches" do all sorts of things that Blenda is totally unaware
of. Those witches like it that way and there are valid reasons for this.

That's a rare admission of your own superficial self, Blenda. See?

I know of beginning students with a greater understanding of what you
have the mere pretense of shovelling out. Beyond that, your routine isn't
that complicated, Blenda. Several posters have outlined what it is, despite
your rampant denials.
> and so get angry and spew (cuz it looks cooler)
Again, you mistake contempt for anger but, that's alright. It is okay
to be a little angry with someone who never seems to catch on, after many
months or years. I'm starting to wonder whether you are intentionally this
dim or if it is an in-born talent of yours.
> and those that

There is no bandwagon, there are only individuals who have their own
separate viewpoints. You play the martyr as poorly as the _teacher_,
Blenda. Your dilemma seems to be getting a new act or learning how to act.
> It's the same atmosphere you find on the
> fundie Christians newsgroups too. Take one of these out and replace with

There you go, pigeon-holing people so that your limited thoughts can
dimly perceive shadows. What sort of "pagan fundamentalism" is it which
your are equating with christian fundmentalism here? There are no beliefs
without believers and yours is one-wayism consisting of cultural thievery,
veiled in lies. Looks like a cult from here.

That's an easy lie of yours to dismiss. There are plenty of "... nice,
kind, wise witches and other pagan folk ..." posting here - you just don't
like them. Not liking them because they aren't nice to you doesn't mean
they don't post much or exist, Blenda.
Now, go get Pashta to reply for you since you are incapable of it.

A rose by any other name..., Brenda. You can try to will the spiritual
properties of plants to be something different, but I'm damn sure that

You go sit in stinging nettles and try to think of spiritual things Brenda.
There's a lot more to consider than just the 'spiritual qualities' of herbs
and plants. In fact, the physical and spiritual go hand in hand. A little
digitalis can be good, but too much can kill. Please don't be hesitant about
answering herbal questions, you could be endangering someone's life, you

You aren't into personalities? Then why did you try and fail to mess around

You reckon eh? Well Brenda, what you see isn't always what others see. I and
others see you as being consistantly rude or disingenuously courteous. I
suppose it must be due to your 'upbringing' as you said to Nightwish.

Here's your 'conversation' Brenda. This is as polite as you can expect. I do

intentionally vicious bitch I used to think you were. If you consider this a
flame instead of an attempt to explain, then sue me.

This thread sure didn't mention herbs in many posts.
Anyways, what herbs are you asking about, Nightwish? The combination
might change them, depending on what they are.
Also, be careful if the ritual calls for eating the herbs. Many herbs
taste bitter, or have thorns, and they aren't fun to eat.
Basil and Chinese Anise. And it's for a spell I'm trying to write myself.
(My first, actually.) I'm trying to write a spell to protect the house I
live in and it's inhabitants from negative energy. And you're right, a lot
of replies to this were irrelevant, thanks to Brenda. Oh well.
**Calibans post.
Brenda
****How do you know that Basil and Chinese Anise are protective?
I personally sage it....(because I feel that sage is cleansing)then use
tibetan singing bowls or if you don't have that....tapping crystal glass
all over your house to raise the vibration (why? because I feel that it
works)and then I just raise a protective wall around my place (mentally).
It works. A lot of replies to this were irrelevent, thanks to those that
replied irrelevently. No one forces a person to flame...take
responsibility for each of us.
Blessings and you're welcome Nightwish.

In my experience, blending herbs that have different ascribed magical
properties is commonly done to create new recipes for use in
spell-work, and in some cases the blending does seem to alter the
qualities of the herbs in those mixtures. However, before taking that
as an unconditional "yes" answer (which it is not), also be aware of
three further factors:
1) Magical properties of herbs do vary by culture sometimes, so what
you see on one site may not be mentioned at another site. Examples:
Ginseng: Asian = male vigour; African-American: gambling luck
Yarrow: European = courage and wound-healing; Chinese: divination
Yellow Dock Root: African-American = money; Iroquois = love-doll
2) Magical properties of some herbs contain their own opposites, most
notably herbs used both to banish/curse and protect/unjinx. In these
cases, often the WAY the herb is used factors into the kind of spell
it appears in. Example:
Vandal Root: can be used to jinx, to protect, and for coercive love
3) Some herb sites on the web are not reliable, just as some books are
not reliable. If authenticity of magical ascriptions is important to
you, check and compare several sources. When evaluating sources, if
you have doubts, you can try a few work-arounds like giving
preference to sources that also list the taxonomic (Latin) name of the
herbs and/or giving preference to sites that list a bibliography of
sources, because these two factors imply a basic level of research on
the part of the author. This is not to say that an illiterate
herbalist will not have great knowledge -- but web authors, by their
very nature, are not illiterate, so they can be tentatively evaluated
by the usual standards for scholarship.

Basil has a long history in Europe of protection with respect to the
family home. It is not generally used to protect a business. In India
it is also considered productive of family and marital happiness. The
saying "Evil cannot come where Basil has been" can be found in old
European herb books and has transferred into the African-American
community in the use of dried basil in floor-sweeps (sprinkle on the
floor, sweep out the door) and as an ingredient in herb-teas brewed
for use as a floor wash (often with the addition of Rosemary and Rue).

Sage is quite good for cleansing. As Brenda noted, there is a
difference between cleansing a house (e.g. with Sage), protecting it,
and reversing or returning curses and jinxes already sent.
I personally do the first two, with the third optional if i believe i
am under attack. I do them in the same order that Brenda described:
First clean the house out, then protect it else the evil will be
trapped inside, then (optionally) reverse all future incoming evil to
its sender.
Other herbs i use for cleansing: Lemon Grass, Camphor (in the form of
squares of resin crumbled burned as incense on charcoal), etc.
Other herbs i use for protection: Red pepper, Salt (not an herb per
se, but used as such in the hoodoo tradition), Black Pepper, Camphor
(in the form of whole squares of resin placed in the corners of a room
or building), Anise, Boldo, Devil Pod (Bat Nut), Devil's Shoe Strings,
etc.
Herbs i use to reverse, return, or send back evil: Agrimony,
Eucalyptus, Devil Pod (Bat Nut), Devil's Shoe Strings, etc. The use
of mirrors for reversing incoming attacks is also common, both in
Chinese feng shui and in African-American hoodoo.
Here are two web pages that may be of interest to you as you research herbs:

have written. The book is for sale, and this is a commercial page, but
on the page there are also 6 complete sample entries (out of 500 in
the book) to read for free.
hoodoo at a glance (herb list)
http://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooataglance.html
-- This is a web page that was compiled and given to my herb store as
a gift by one of our customers. It lists many common herbs, minerals,
and formulas for oils that we sell in the shop, with ascriptions for
use, but you need not purchase the herbs from us to use the page. The
list is not complete, but it gives a good overview of about 100 herbs,
sorted by condition (e.g. love, money, protection, etc.).

Cordially,

Personally, I use nettles for protection. The really nasty stinging ones
(which can also be used for s&m, but that is another subject entirely).
Hawthorns are really good also. (I will probably try a more permanent
protection spell this spring, involvong growing a hawthorn as bonsai,
but I don't know yet if it will work...)
I've never seen sage as a protective plant. I can sort of see how it
would be cleansing, but not protective. Cleansing and protective,
despite your limited vocabulary, Brenda, don't mean the same thing.
I have no experience with basil or Chinese anise, so I don't know if
they'd work (though I am not saying they won't, just that I don't know
much about them).
Sage is cleansing from what I've read, especially to cleanse
bad luck out of your house.
Thank you for taking the time to self-censor what you read. Curiously,
these attempts at moderating unmoderated forums are doomed from the start.
Can you guess why?

It would be easier for you to simply not reply but, seeing as how I'm on

No, she asked specifically about combining herbs, the protection spell being

Yes, she could have repeated herself since you hadn't read her post properly

You mean, there are no sources of information other than books, and the
voices in your head, where I could have gotten this information?
If anyone is still interested in the original question...
Personally, when I am constructing a ritual, I will narrow in on a
particular intent, and try to be as specific as possible about what I
want to achieve (though not specific on how it should manifest, if you
get the distinction). To use your example, I would either perform a
protection ritual and set wards on the house, or perform a modified
banishing ritual (begone, and stay gone). Yes, there have been times
when I have made a herbal mix for a specific purpose... when combining
them in a ritual, I would name the virtue I wished to utilize as I
empower it ("here is Chamomile, for restfulness" or whatever). Pre-made
herbal blends... I'll pass, thanks. I like to know what is in the blend,
and exactly why it has been included. Not just a list of everything
under "Lust" in Cunningham's. I like to keep it simple, clear and
straightforward, and prefer to deal with the herbs individually at least
at one stage of the ritual.
As for the properties changing when you mix herbs... yes and no. IMHO
there will be some synthesis going on there, but if you are careful and
deliberate in your choices the virtues should be quite consonant. The
exception is in the use of incence. I find that with scents, a blend is
more (or less) than the sum of it's parts.
To be honest, I have only partly scanned through the rest of this
thread, but I didn't see much that actually adressed what you were
asking about, so I thought I'd throw this in to the mix <heh>
R.
Last night I began writing a list of things I may need for the spell, and
jotting down my thoughts on different aspects of what I hope to achieve
(notes for righting the spoken word aspect of the spell) and actually
getting to the part where I finish a final draft of the spell, seemed very
daunting. There is a lot about spell writing and casting that I still have
to learn, and while I realize the only way to learn is through experience,
there's a small nagging part of me that asks, 'what if you fuck up?
ROYALLY?' And then I find myself wondering if I'm even going about things
the right way. There are so many web sites out there that give easy answers.
I don't want easy answers. I also don't want misinformation, so I don't put
much faith on what I read on a web site. What I need, is guidance, and
idiots like Brenda aside, I think the majority of people here have been very
helpful to me. (Thanks, guys =D) I'll probably be asking a lot more spell
writing-related questions in the near future, and some of those questions
might sound pretty dumb (especially to the more experienced), but I'm
learning as I go, and I'm trying my best. Try to bear with me, and know that
I appreciate any real help people give me. =)

There is not one "right way". There are hundreds, even thousands, of
ways, of doing just about any spell. Remember, everyone starts
somewhere, and of course you will fuck up a few occasionally. If you're
afraid of fucking up, then start small, so that fuck ups won't cause too
many problems, and stick to spells that might have a short time frame.
Since you're trying a protection spell, limit it to a week or a month or
a few days, and see how it works.

I like dumb spell questions. Gives me a chance to write dumb spells. And
remember, just because it's fucked up, doesn't neccesarily mean it's
wrong...
Lol. Valid point. =)
Hee hee! Now that was funny.
****then you would make a horrendous teacher I'd suspect. Calling someone

experience, Brenda? If you've got a beef with how other people treat you,
get your own thread. I'm trying to learn here. Or, you could just SHUT UP.
That would work just as well.

Yeah Jani. You shouldn't be rude to people you don't like. It's more
polite to be a whiny bitch instead.
BTW, Brenda, when your bible mentioned "turn the other cheek" it didn't
mean to promote being passive-aggressive. At least, I hope it didn't.
But I suppose, if it did, it's your problem, not mine...
Why? Since you clearly think she's a newbie, why not either give her
the information she asks for, or shut the fuck up? Do you EVER resist
the urge to show how little you know?

Are you trying to say that some herbs have similar properties thus how

See? Wasn't that easy?

The wisest women, (and men - there are men too, much as you wish there
were not), do perceive what you *mean* by _ravening_. They are not deceived
by your attempts at deception.

There is a course for learning to lie better than you do it? Save for
political on-the-job training, a search yields no candidates.

That place is so far beyond the reach of your wildest dreams that you
cannot imagine the merest shadow of it from where you stagnate, Blenda.
The swamp of self-deception which forms your misinformed miasma of dimly
misunderstood thoughts is relieved only by the buzzing mosquitos of your
compulsive lying. You are not even a student, let alone fit to steal
the name _teacher_ for your misusage.

Since you insist upon your pretense of _teaching_, know that there are
always others who actually are teachers. This is how they can recognise
when empty ones such as yourself merely try to co-opt what you see as a
_title_. Your own posted words give lie to your pretense, B***da,
refutation isn't even necessary;
only illumination of them, for the benefit of true students.
> *****this is how I teach and she asked a question
You don't _teach_, B***da. You cannot. "The mediocre teacher
tells..." - Even this, you do poorly. Esoteric subject matter is not
contained in words or memorization of techniques or "spells". It rests in a
certain quality which you, Brenda, sorely lack. You shall never discover
this quality, nor can you learn it; let alone _teach_ it.

"The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates..." -
Blenda has given an ineptly-presented demonstration of lying, entitled,
"ravening".
While this demonstration does not constitute _teaching_, it does serve to
indicate that, if she wishes to lie, she must learn to do so more
proficiently. I would
recommend the tutoring of a random four year old child in this curriculum
or, recalling her own childhood to her.

If she had answered your *question*, it is possible to extrapolate your
responses to it. In general, they would be as they have been; reeking of
false-superiority and outright condescension masked as _teaching_.

You are uninspiring, B***da. Those are not "students" you think you
'have', they are the duped. Bring them here, let them see the truth. You
cannot, such are
your superficial apprehensions and so it is with the deepest of your
fears. So desparately do you desire to be thought of as a _teacher_, that
you will lie, posture

Not so. You, B***da, insist that you wish to learn yet, you never do.
You see what is intended to be seen.

Your statement has a null semantic content. If they are open to

Sure. A banishing, then a protection ritual. Don't blunt your intent by
trying to do too mych within a single ritual. By analogy, I find that my
cooking is better if I simplify my choice of condiments so that specific
flavours are allowed to shine through. My opinion, YMMV of course.

That is pretty much the way I go about designing a ritual. I cover the
table with books of correspondance and such, and scrawl a lot of notes.
Then I refine it down to something appropriate (and beautiful, don't
forget to try and make it art as well). don't feel obliged to include
every possible correspondance you find.
There is a lot about spell writing and casting that I still have

I'm a writer (or at least, I like to think I am. I've had a couple things
published. Not much to speak of though.) and enjoy the challenge of putting
together things of this nature, however, it seems that lately I've fallen so
out of practice that I've got a severe case of writers block (as I mentioned
in my latest thread on Writing the spell...) I realize I don't need to
include every correspondence I find. I use the correspondences I understand
the best, and am the most familiar with. (Which common sense would dictate.

Thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately, since I recently lost my job,
funds are tight right now, so I'm afraid I won't be able to check it out any
time soon. (I HIGHLY doubt I would find it at a public library, but I could
be mistaken.) However, when I get the chance to do so, I will be sure to
look into it. I appreciate your feedback very much. =)

If you want to see the true Face of Evil...
then look for the Face of God.
That's been happening to me, too. Maybe Microsoft incompetently added
something in one of the latest patches.

Great. So, if I get a lobatomy like you and Will and Brenda, then I will
become an enlightened woman? What religion is this anyway? It sounds
crazier than scientology. Why can't you loonies just castrate yourselves
instead?
Outlook stopped working at all for me a month ago. I ended up having to
get netscape, so it wouldn't crash. But it doesn't have a killfile, so
now whenever I see Tales post I get KILLFILE ENVY.
Brenda
****and how I answer her is how I answer. She said that she uses blank and
blank and what if they have adverse properties to one another...to give
her the answer to her question I had to ask her why she believed it works
in the first place. I don't know everything..nor do I believe in giving
just stuff that I heard from others. She asked a question and I tried to
answer as best I could. Then she was rude and told me to shut up.
It would have been far better if she would have said ...thanks and left it
at that...rather than shut up.
