Hold everything, STOP THE PRESSES!!
You all have indeed been given incorrect information concerning the
Cactus Springs gravel proposal. The proposed pit is NOT adjacent to the
Shosone property. You are indeed looking at two different maps between
the EA and the biological report. The location map in the Bio report is
indeed incorrect. The map in the EA is the accurate map. The proposed
pit is considerably south of the Temple. WE WOULD NOT EVER CONSIDER
touching your temple/shrine in any way. The Bio report map is
inaccurate
and the EA map is the correct location. There was no need to correct
the
Bio report's map because the area encompased by the EA map was also
included in the Bio survey. So please disregard the Bio location map,
that was caused by a misunderstanding between myself and the
biologist.
The project site is 100% south of the transmission line Right-of-Way
that
passes through the middle of section 11 going east-west.
I just wish someone had called to talk about your concerns before all of
this up roar was caused.
It is true that I had proposed using the existing road that passes by
the
temple but that is only because I wanted to avoid building a new road
and
creating unnecessary disturbace to the land. We would have only needed
to widen the road slightly to accomodate the vehicles. It is presently
about one lane in width. However, considering the present uproar moving
the access about 1/2 mile west is a very acceptable alternative. This
would avoid any noise or signifiacnt dust in or around the temple.
As to Ms Pearlman not being notified about this proposal it was not the
fault of the BLM or anyone really. Ms. Pearlman told me that she had
told the BLM that she wanted to be notified about activity in her area.
But from what I could tell she was talking to the recreation people
about
recreational events (ie. the western shooting events, etc.). That type
of request would NOT put her on the notification list for the Lands and
Minerals Division which is a completely different division from the
Recreation Division within all BLM offices. When you ask one devision
to
notify you concerning it's activities you are not automatically put on a
list to be notifed about ALL activities that the BLM does, just that
division's activities.
To their credit the BLM staff did make a comment during their draft
review to avoid any damage to the Temple. Believe me, the BLM WAS
looking out for your interests. My response in the draft EA that was
sent out to the public was that we would be driving past but in no way
would we interfere with the temple. This was predicated on my
understanding that Mr. Graham had spoken with and had a meeting with Mr.
Jack Orr on May 22 to discuss use of the access road and (from what I
understood) had a tentative agreement with CNS to rent the 2 trailer
from
CNS (the trailer now occupied by Ms. Pearlman) after the BLM permit was
approved. Obviously that will not happen now.
Ms. Ashby is indeed correct that the BLM plats and the USGS quadrangle
map do not match. You have to understand that the BLM plats showing
each
section on their microfiche are ALWAYS perfect squares. Unfortuantely,
may sections of lands that are surveyed for mapping by the USGS are not
perfect squares. When this happens the parcels within a section that
are
not excatly 40 acres are placed on the BLM plats as what is called a
"lot" and sometimes as a "track". This results with
the BLM having to take an irregular square and map it onto theit plats
and somehow force it into a perfect square. This often causes problems
that have to be resolved by having the parcel surveyed later to locate
the exact property lines. To state the obvious, this is the cause of
many problems, as is true in the immediate case.
It was our intention to have the project boundaries surveyed prior to
any
operations. The extreme NE corner of the project site is in actuallity
abot 1/8 mile south of the southern most boundary of Tr 37 (the Shoshone
land) and about 1/4 mile south of the Temple. Most proposed operatons
will actually be conducted a bit farther away (3/8 to 1/2 mile).
Ms. Ashby is indeed correct when she says that ther have been some
misunderstandings here. It is possible that these misundersatndings
were
intentional. I do not know if I should tell you about this aspect of
the
matter but I will anyway. In August we filed an ethics compalint with
the Nevada Ethics Board in Carson city against Indian Springs Advisory
Board memeber Jim Chase. The ethics complaint also includes several
other members of the board as to collusion and unethical conduct. Mr.
Chase is in the employment of a developer named Chris Lui. He is the
president of Presidentail Development, Corporation. Mr. Chase, with the
help of other board members, has been using his influience on the
Advisory Board to further it intersts of Mr. Lui and that of
Presidentail
Development. In fact, Mr. Chase attended a meeting with Chris Lui and
Mark Chaterton of the BLM to assist Mr. Lui in obtaining 270 acres of
BLM
land around Indian Springs for his proposed development of a Gambling
Casino and a Hotel/Resort in Indian Springs. Memebers of the Indian
Springs Advisory Board are either in Mr. Lui's paid employment or stand
to make money in doing business with Mr. Lui. After Corvette San and
Gravel, Inc. filed the ethics complaint Mr. Chase and other board
members
have been heard threatening to "get even by (explitive deleted) Mr.
Grahams project". People in Indian Springs have either a financial
interest or a revenge interest in opposing Mr. Grahams project. I tell
you this to only ask you to please verify information
passed on by other people since those other people may have alterior
motives for providing you with information that is false, incomplete or
taken out of context..
Please lets talk about this project, Mr. Graham is most interested in
mitigating ANY concerns you may have. I will fax you any further
information you might want.
Sincerely,
Fred Schuster

*************ORIGINAL MESSAGE*************
[many lines of header info stripped -- Betsy]
HELP! HELP! HELP!
This is an alert to all persons who have visited the Temple of Sekhmet
in Cactus Springs, Nevada or plan to in the future. I urge immediate
attention to my request, and ask you to write a letter of protest. If
you decide to help, please send the following information to every
pagan you know of, about or through -- if you work with bulletin boards
in the pagan or women's spirituality community, please send to them
too. This will also be important to Native American communities. Time is
of the essence! There will be no public hearing -- this is
just a routine land snatch for the Bureau of Land Management and the
mining company who wants to dig here. There is a deadline of December
31, 1997 (now!) to get protest in by snail mail -- address at end.
It will be very helpful if you copy the Temple Priestess, email or
snail
mail -- she may need those copies to document public protest. Also,
your U.S. Congressperson, the President and the Vice-President of the
United States.
Also, this Temple has been featured recently in New Age
Magazine, Chrone Chronicles and will be in Sage Woman soon. It is the
only temple to a goddess built by a woman in this country. It is of
haybale and was commissioned, designed, and physically built by women.
It has been in continual use since it was constructed; many people have
left gifts, including images of other goddesses, from Kwan Yin to Freya,
from the Madre del Mundo to Aphrodite. It is a beautiful place of quiet
and meditation. Please help us keep her that way -- Patricia Cuney
(WomanSpirit and ffacs)
>From Patricia Pearlman onsite:
Please read on, I'll be brief. The Goddess Temple and the Sunrise
Ritual Circle of the Western Shoshone in Cactus Springs, Nevada are
under attack. The Bureau of Land Management is considering giving
permission to a sand and gravel company to mine on land mmediately
adjacent to the Western Shoshone land and the Goddess Temple..
Gen Vaughan bought this 22 acre site five years ago and gave it the
Western Shoshone. In their agreement, they set aside two acres and built
the Sekhmet Temple 15 miles south of the Nevada nuclear site to
heal the land. If BLM permission goes through, the impact from heavy
equipment and mining will thoroughly disrupt the rituals and ceremonies
of the Temple.
You can reach me at 702.879.3263 or goddes...@igc.apc.org I am the
priestess and caregiver to the Temple of Sekhmet. The Temple typically
hosts an average of 20-50 visitors a week. The spiritual leader of the
Ritual Circle of the Western Shoshone, Corbin Harvey, sees about 20
people at a time and hosts ritual sweat lodge>
You can help by writing BLM the following: (important to use this
language):
I understand BLM is considering granting a sand and gravel company
access to land adjacent to the 22 acres held by the Western Shoshone,
and that access will be through a private road owned by the
Shoshone.I am writing to protest this action.
There are spiritual sites and cultural resources on the Western
Shoshone land
that will be substantially and negatively affected. The noise and dust
will have a deleterious social impact on the cultural life of people
who regularly come to worship. The site includes natural
springs and habitat for diverse species of birds and small animals.
There will be potentially irrevocable damage to this fragile desert
eco-system. As a citizen I strongly urge BLM to set aside this
proposal and leave the land unmolested.
I will be sending a copy of this letter to my congressperson.
Sincerely -
Mail must be received by 12/31.
Send to:Edward Suem,
Bureau of Land Management,
4765 Vegas Drive, Las Vegas, NV89108. S
Send a copy to Michael Dwyer, District Manager at the same address
and to your Congressperson. It would be great moral support to also
send a copy to Patricia Pearlman @ PO Box 946, Indian Springs, NV
89018. Blessed Be, CW Patricia Pearlman
