Does anyone remember White's Bar in Oxfords High Street?
We recently visited Oxford after 30 years away and could not find it.

Was that close to one of the entrances of the covered market? If so, it
had changed some time back, to a trendy fashion store.

Richard.

It was on the other side of the road towards Carfax.
We thought we had found it with a door marked "Fish and Chips", but
when we went along the corridor it was different.
There was a fashion shop next door which it could have been.

Incidently, we couldn't find the Northgate Tavern in Cornmarket
either.

Thanks for your help .. Ken

That sound suspiciously like the old Russell Acott's music shop which
later became a trendy wine bar. Boy! I miss Russell Acott with the
piano practice rooms upstairs which you could hire for a few quid per hour.

It was nothing really. No, I mean it - I did nothing.

I thought remembering my youth , that Whites Bar was just inside Avenue1 for
the Market , just befor you get inside beside the gate, up those stairs..or
at least it used to be a Bar &/or some sort of Night Venue 20 - 30 years ago

As I recall Northgate Tavern was in St Michael's Street & became the Three
Goats Heads, not sure if it is still called this

Very sorry to hear that news. Ossie had a forgiving eye for both age and the exchange of substances back in the White's Bar days. It was mainly US airman upstairs in the 'lounge', but downstairs it was Mod heaven; the walls covered in Blues, Jazz, R'nB and Soul album covers dating back to the very early '60's. The best jukebox outside Jericho blaring away.
I worked at Burton Tailors on Carfax in 66-7 and we used to nip into Russell Acotts Saturday lunchtimes, where the wonderful Yvonne (?) used to play the latest soul music 45's for us as we crowded into one of their listening booths. Wonderful times.
Fridays and Saturday nights would start ensconced in the far corner seat of the downstairs bar in Whites, right next to the jukebox. Then it was off to Market street, onto the bikes and out to the Bridge Hotel Wheatley to be abused by Adrian 'Hoppy' Hopkins and to see bands like Simon Dupree's Big Sound, and the Gas, Alan Bown and Long John Baldry with Elton John on keyboards. White's was the last bar I drank in before heading off to NZ, and the first familiar face I saw in Auckland three days after arriving? A barman from Whites! On one of my early but regular trips back I was devastated to find Whites Bar had closed. A few of my Oxford mates from Whites days now live out here in Oz, and I'll pass on the sad news. I also heard, many years back, that Denis later ran a pub in Ireland and was blowed up? Really miss Whites bar, which, by the way, was on the same side of the road as Acotts (opposite the covered market, and a few doors up towards Carfax. There should be a blue plaque - 'On this site stood White's Bar - home to Oxford's Mod scene in the 1960's'.

I used to go to White's in the early to mid70's, the entrance was near carfax not far up from the entrance to the chequers - you went down a corridor through a glass door and it was a long thin bar, in my day there were fairground horses - it was an exciting pub at weekends and there were frequent fights there

Fond memories of White'Bar.and used it regularly in the early 70s. Many of the customers were American servicemen, chilling out from their duties with The Cold War. Few fights as Denis had a way that avoided confrontation before it escalated.

White's Bar used to be on the opposite side of the road to the covered market entrances on the High Street. The last time I looked for it it had changed names to an Irish club. That was over twenty five years ago. It was one of themost popular places to socialize with your friends on a saturday night. Many good memories.

Remember it well. Yes on the opposite side to the market. If you had some money we drunk there and if hard up went to the Crown in jericho. All the album sleeves on the walls and Monday night was rock disco night. Can remember Alicde Cooper and Killer playing there often.

Random curiosity... for no particularly good reason was just trying to remember my way around Oxford pubs in the mid-late 70's. White's had a spectacular juke box collection at the time! Brilliant hippy hangout in '76, rather lost its way in '77 (or possibly '78) after the same police squad that formed 'Operation Julie' decided to take Oxford apart, which probably needed doing as a number of White's regulars had o/d'ed. What was the basement bar in the Cornmarket called?

Remember it well in the late 1950's. Lots of U S Air Force men hung around. Great air of being exotic in so far as character of the place was concerned, a "What's Behind the Green Door" atmosphere as my friend - a regular - described it.

In the late 60s, you entered Whites at your peril. The preferred drink was stingo.
